Jim,

Do RadarTest.com tells you which category that the 980 and 8500 beats the V1? I've been using a V1 for the past 3 years and its range and false alarm filter is simply outstanding.

FWIW, the "Bogey Counter" on my V1 really saved my butt a couple of times. Once in a while, local PD would put out trailers on the street equipped with a radar and a screen showing your speed as you drive by. Normally, the V1 shows "1" bogey, but in two different occassions, the bogey shows "2" source of radar. Sure enough, there was a cop with a radar gun hiding about 200 yards behind the radar trailer. With any other radar detector, I'll never know the different and walk right into the speed trap. IMO, the V1 is well worth its price.

When you call Valentine Research, ask if they have any returned units for sale. I was told that once in a while (especially after holiday seasons) they will have some returned unit for sale at a small discount. Hope this helps.

What I found on RadarTest site was:
Pro: phenomenal radar sensitivity, as good as or better than the Valentine One;
They mentioned the test results will be out next month.

I called Valentine and they do have returns for $359.00 I was told why the returns is that a lot of people order them for a long vacation trip and then return the system to Valentine for a refund.

Most jammers I have researched must be used in conjunction with a detector. When the detector receives a signal, the jammer is then activated.
However most jammers are only 1 band, not both X & K.

I was all set to order the V1 until I read the post about the Escort 8500. I called and talked to one of the tech's at escort and he said the 8500 was good for a two to three mile range in front but only 1/2 maybe 3/4 mile range in back. He said most everthing else was comperable, kept saying he was 100 cheaper but L owners seem to not worry about money. He also claimed that his unit would not give as many false alarms as the V1. I like the 8500 as far as size which should mount easier in the L but not sure I want to give up on the rear antenna. What's another 100. Plus the escort's are on a two to three week back order. To which I asked if that meant it would be two to three weeks before the bill hit my credit card and of course that was a no, so I think I will stay with the V1.

I thought that was funny until I looked at the mod list for my L and checked the total amount I've spent on this truck so far.

If you use his sales logic, a regular F150 is cheaper than the F150 Lightning SVT so it must be just as good, right?

So what was his point again?

Did a little shopping around Smile PhotoVideo.com sells the Bel 980 for $219.85.

This price is hard to beat vs. Valentine1's $399 when they are about the same except the directional which I might like, just because

Jim, good timing...

I just did a lot of research and discovered that a few of V1's competitors have caught up with them. The best alternative I found was the Bel 980. So I just ordered it.
Went with the Bel because its much smaller, cheaper, and I thought I could live without the extra V1 features (counter/direction).
And I am hoping to figure out a stealth mounting inside the overhead console... something not possible with the V1.

Bel 980 is ~$250 from www.sounddomain.com

If you can wait a day or two, I can tell you if sounddomain is legit... and hopefully by this weekend I'll have some experience with the unit.

Thumbs up

I have been a valentine one owner for 5 yrs now and it has worked without any problems. The only two tickets i have received in the last 5 yrs have been from aircraft. Not only is the directional convenient but the volume controlled mute is nice. Since we all know nothing can detect instant on radar i tend to make sure other vehicles are in front of me so that i can get a bounced signal. If you know your roads well then you know where and when you get false signals. JMHO
