Angry 11k miles - intercooler Leaking

I marked the intercooler with a sharpie marker about 4 months ago after reading these forums. Today I noticed it is about 1/2 inch low.
I have a little over 11000 miles on my 2000. And I am taking it in Monday. I was already scheduled to have the muffler replaced due to the noise it is making. Now they can work a little harder.....

Hoping for new engine
Will get at least Intercooler - Supercharger - O2 Sensors - Oil Change - Spark Plugs - or I will hire an attorney to join me for my second visit to the Dealer.

I also posted this in PFA's thread on BON

Question

In Sept. I put down money on a 2001...should be in the end of Jan. Ive been reading messages about IC leaks so I faxed my concerns to SVT. SVT called me and said
leaks had only been in only 1% of engines and thats not enough to do anything about it. I asked if there was going to be a fix for 2001 and the guy said he had no information. Does anyone know???

Thumbs down

1% is total BS. That would be less than 100 intercoolers for all of 1999 & 2000 models combined.

Doug,

Keep us DFW guys informed as to who does your service on the I/C. I am getting ready to hit 11k miles in my 15 month old '99. I sure hope I'm on the fortunate side of this issue.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Doug, sorry to hear about your I/C leak. Mark (Autothrottle) said he's had good service from Don Davis Ford in Arlington. They did his I/C, and they're doing his engine swap. He said to contact a service writer named Mark Freeman. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am gonna take it to Bankston first. I have the Extended Warranty as well so they have no choice but to replace it. I am debating whether to bother pulling chipenfilter.

They likely wont do anything about it yet, since I am not losing much coolant yet. But I see value in recording the issue before the 12,000 miles is up, even though it would be covered under both the 3/36 Powertrain and the extended warranty. I also realised a way to use the extended warranty. When I drop off the truck Monday the Ex warranty will get me a Free rental and I dont have to pay the $50.00 deductible.

The good news is I am having a speaker upgrade done this weekend. Only trouble is I may need a fusion reactor in the bed to power the amp !! <grin>

Doug,

When I my IC replaced, I made damn sure my L looked just like it did the day I bought it (at least the engine bay). Hell, I even re-installed the black plastic cover on "the brain."

The las thing I wanted was to go to the wall(or the man) when they blame the chipenfilter on the IC leak.

Limit their opportunities to weasel out. CYA all the way!!!

Doug,

I would get the truck back to stock if possible. You don't want to give them any reason to void your warranty. If they void the warranty, it would be an uphill battle to get them to change their mind.

Doug,
Sorry to hear about the i.c.
Pull the chipenfilter they can put that info in the their network. That could bit you in the a$$ later........
I'm good friends with the service writer and every L he gets with the i.c. leak (5 total mine beening the first) Ford tells them to change the i.c., plugs, oil,o2 sensors and thats it. No motor change unless your really sucking some coolent. I would'nt let it get that far though.
The deal with my L is the New motor is going in right now and it IS a 2001 motor.....
I don't know if there is any diff. in the 00-01 motors but thats what the tech was telling me. the swap is not a drop in. They have to swap the blower and upper intake because the wirring harnesses are diff....
So I guess the i.c. is diff, right????
I thought I read somewhere that the i.c. was revised or diff.
O-well good luck with the i.c. If you would like to try my dealer let me know there are pretty quick. I have nothing bad to say about them,yet.......
Good luck Doug

I'm getting a new motor because the head gasket was leaking.
It should be done on Monday.

Only 1% reported to date, perhaps? Consider that many of these vehicles have not been in service that long or with many miles logged.
Some folks on this board are on their third intercooler. SVT has it head up you-know-what. And a major leak can destroy an engine. And what does those leaks do to emission controls? In my state we have treadmill emissions tests every two years. If I have even a small leak, will I fail the test?

This whole mess looks like typical Ford responsiveness to problems like the Explorer and Firestone fiasco, which is giant mess and not something small like the intercooler issue. Rant ended.

If there are only 1% with leaks, then every one of those must be a member of this board. Welcome to the Intercooler Leak club - I'm an unhappy member. Of course they only had my truck in the shop for 13 days to fix it. They (SVT) are full of *****!

MarkJohn: I also ordered an '01L; I did post a couple of months ago on this board whether the IC leaking problem was addressed. I cannot find the old post, but I am sure someone responded that the '01L part number is DIFFERENT than the '99-'00 part. The inference was, of course, that the problem was indeed addressed by Ford. However, I am still searching for that post to confirm. I am also asking my dealer's tech people and see if they heard anything.

Jim (southern CA), do you have any access to information that will help confirm this? With all these IC posts I am beginning to have second thoughts about my '01L on order....
