Radar detectors
Baddog is right, it depends on where you live, but gettin a radar detector is well worth the money, the one i have right now has saved my butt many a times. Its also usefull so you know when a cop is around so you dont puch the gas really loud or do burnouts well they are on the other side of the block.
Someone said they don't give discounts on the Valentine1. Too bad, a group purchase of those would spark some interest I'd bet. Has anyone ever tried?

I'm in Ca. and the Valentine has saved me a ton o money. Last time I looked they were 400.00. You have to buy them direct. They usually run ads in Motor Trend, etc. I remember reading a Detector comparison and the Valentine was the best.
It depends on where you live, and how the cops use their radar.
In Michigan, the State Police tend to sit and broadcast. In Ohio, they use the instant on more frequently. If you get painted with instant-on by a cop going the other way, you may not get any useful warning.
I regard radar detectors as most useful for avoiding getting picked off for speeding inadvertantly. If you are a real scofflaw, it will take a radar detector and some luck.

They are not a guaantee against a ticket but if you are prone to high speed blasts they will at least keep you from Hitting 100 in front of a blaring radar trap. I use the Valentine 1 which is easier to read than the others I have used. It is much easier to tell a false signal with the V1

Probably the most helpful feature of the Valentine is its ability to detect the number of signals. Frequently the purveyors of tickets will deliberately set up in a area that has a constant signal from something other than a radar gun. Any detector other than a valentine will register one signal and you won't slow down because you are accustomed to it. The Valentine will show 2 signals alerting you to the presense of another signal.....Ken
Along with being an absolutely super unit, the V1 also has a second antenna that faces toward the rear. This catches the guy that is trying to sneak up in back of you. No other detector(that I'm aware of) has this feature. It kept me from getting a ticket one night. A V1 will pay for itself if you drive a lot or speed a lot. Unfortunately, I tend to do both.
I've got a Bel that has saved me both front and rear, and it's wireless, so it's very clean. I don't know how it compares to the V1, and offhand I don't know my Bel's model number. But I do know that it works, and at long range to the front and decent range to the rear. It does eat up the batteries though.
