fuel pump relay

What does the fuel pump relay do? does it switch the pump from low to high?
When i was having my truck tuned it was running out of fuel all of the sudden, when i remembered reading something on here about the redister right above the intercooler pump and i tied the wires together and it work fine and it has been working ever since, so was it the resistor that went bad or was the relay?

There are actually 2 relays for the fuel pumps. One relay turns the pumps on and the other relay bypasses the resistor for WOT operation.

In your case, it could be either the resistor or the high speed relay that is bad. Disconnect the wires from the resistor and test the resistor with an ohmmeter. It should read about 3 ohms. If it reads open, replace the resistor. If it reads ok, replace the high speed relay.

It happened to me. I got out of the truck one day and noticed the exhaust tips were light grey. I thought that was odd since I run it a little rich and it was warm weather. I got back in it and took it down the road, the fuel pressure was reading 38-40psi and when I rolled in the throttle it went up to about 44psi and stayed there... I went straight to the ford dealer and replaced both relays because I wasnt sure which one was the high side. The problem was solved and the fuel pressure moved from 40psi up to 60psi when I nailed it ...problem solved.

LESSON #1....I learned that if you have a fuel guage mounted inside, it doesnt do much good if you dont look at it from time to time.

Good luck.
