Post Wrecked my L today :(

Well I guess all this talk about getting rid of it finally pissed her off. It rained today for the first time in a while. And of course the roads are slippery and oily. Well I was merging onto a highway through a gentle sweeping curve and at the end I gave it a little gas. I know I didnt hammer, but the rear started to slide out and to the right well I thought "no big deal This has happened before" So I let off the gas and corrected, just then the truck completely spun around, I don't know how many times. It was spinning and spun across the dirt/mud medium that seperates the north and south bound lanes. I hit the dirt and was on 2 wheels and then spun some more dropping the truck back down to all 4 where it slid across 2 lanes of traffic clipping a van, it then slid into and over the curb almost flipping. The damage is bad... very bad I'll make a short list as I do not know too much about body work

both passenger side wheels are broken

rear passenger side wheel snapped off from the axle and was under the truck

Front bumper detached under truck

Bed is pushed up into cab and ****eyed

Dent in cab

Bed has crack near rear bumper

Front driving light missing

Ground effects ripped off

3 Tires blown

Rear bumper bent towards front of truck

Brake seperated from rotor

Mud through out the cab??? Windows were closed

Tow truck driver crushed my ground effect that were left on

Exhaust is torn off

Tailgate is seperated

There is more but I can not think of every little detail right now. I can only be happy that I am alive right now. I am truely amazed at what can happen to a vehicle, and this was at low speeds 20-30 mph. I got a ticket for careless driving too. Well I thought I was pretty careful, I did avoid hitting one car. I guess his psychic powers saw me do it on purpose. I dunno. Whats all of your takes on this. Do you think insurance will total this? I love this truck but this was not the way I wanted to part with it. Im gonna go cry now.

My condolences, that is a day you'd rather have stayed in bed. from what you describe it's a tough call on a total or not. they might decide to fix it, considering the retail value. At least you're ok. A moment of silence for the fallen warrior........................................... .................................................. First off this was your lucky day. Getting in a spin is a great way to get T - Boned and killed, that didn't happen so any thing else that did happen is no big deal. Second if the insurance wants to fix that truck, SELL IT!

No...nothing good did happen today. Besides I didnt die. Funny thing was it was my day off. If I had worked today this would had never happened. Oh well you win some you lose some. If I were to sell this it would have a wrecked title and it wouldn't sell for much...or would it? I really don't know. Thank you all for the good words.

That hurts me to read that. Its a damn goood that you are okay. You know hwat they say, you can always gert another Lightning.

After seeing my truck at the dealership (moose crash), I was wondering too if they were going to total it. But no, they fixed it all. I talked with a dealer this summer at a Honda dealership, and he thought the insurance totaled it.

Hopefully you didn't have State Farm Ins. Mine went up $15. a month recently. I think they just figured out what a Lightning is. Your accident will definately go down as "Pilot error".

Thumbs down

I am so sorry this happened. It must have been one hell of a big scare not knowing where you were going to end up. Glad you're okay.

Hey Floyd-

Wow, that's incredible... definately glad to hear that you are okay though. This Oregon weather is nuts, and all the ruts in the freeway that hold water don't help things any.

If you get to missing your Lightning though, come on up to Oregon City sometime. There are at least 4 here in this one piddly little town (2 red, 1 black, 1 white). I still have to meet all the drivers/owners though.

Not that there's much you could have done about it but ....

Since it was a sweeper, being on the gas transfered weight to the rear tires, increasing grip until such time as the acceleration overwhelmed the grip and the slide started. By letting off the gas and still being in a turn, you unloaded weight off the rear tires, further decreasing traction and inducing spin.

Pretty tough situation to be in. Ive spun my truck once in the rain as well. I was fortunate to be on a track where I had some run-off room. The only damaged was a scratched bumper and busted foglight. I'd hate to have that happen on the highway. I hope you get it fixed soon.

Wrong Nathan,
You don't drive it to the edge on wet road while not going in a straight line. There are too many additonal factors to deal with in a turn compared to breaking it loose in a straight line. Moral, drive easy when in a turning situation on a wet road knowing if you brake loose things may happen to fast for you to react to them.
