I have had my Silver Lightning for 4 days now and have not gotten on it once. I think I have gotten the boost gauge to move up to 2 once or twice and that is it. I have kept the RPM's under 3,000. I can't wait to see how fast it really is. My 95 had some work done to it and it was pretty quick but I know it was not a 13 second truck. I hope taken it nice and easy on the truck for the first 1500 miles pays off in the long run.

I agree with you John. I wated for 1500 before I started running it harder. Of course since everything broke on it the day after I bought it (with nothing but slow easy driving) it guess it did not really matter all that much.

I pampered mine for the first 1500 miles. Then got a new engine, 300 miles later got a new transmission. Well that pampering didn't work.

Said to myself, "run it like you stole it" on the new engine. No problems to report. Get into it. You won't regret it!!!

Since I drove 3 different lightnings the day I test drove them all at my dealer, none of them were driven easy. I wanted to buy the strongest running truck of the 3 (which was the red one) so I had to drive them all hard. these engines do not need any break in time only the brakes do. same with my 95 r model, I bought it with 199 miles on it last year and slammin the gas ever since. its a beast.

 

Kidding aside, I tried to stay away from WOT to redline for about 1,000 miles. No visits to the strip, no street races and no 100 mph runs on the freeway.

But it was completely impossible to avoid beating on it a little bit. There were a lot of really quick 0-40 runs in that time.

I am convinced that engines don't need to "break in" the way they did when I was a young'un, but I still feel guilty flogging a new vehicle too soon.

It seems that we are all ignoring the fact that people test drive these Ls before you buy them and most likely they have been pushed hard (why else would someone want to test drive a Lightning anyway?). So, you're just delaying your own gratification. Enjoy, and stomp that pedal to the floor!

I had to wait for my truck to be built, no one test drove it. Got mine on March 24th 2000. (with a big'ole 6 miles on it)

They didn't have any at the dealership either for me to drive.

Of course, the dealership now has a used Black 2000, a Silver 2000 (which may now be sold I think), a Red 2000, a HD-F150, and a Cobra R in the showroom all for sale.

Too bad their prices still stuck. (I paid $1k over sticker, down from $2k over sticker, and other then the used one, the other two L's still said "+$2k MARKET ADJUSTMENT" on them.

It had to get from the end of the assembly line, to the lot, to the carrier, to the train, to another carrier and off that onto the dealer lot. I've yet to see those little rubber "****" on the new rear tires of an "L", they're on the front, but not the back. Rear alignment problem perhaps.
