Question are 740I's fast????

I was just entered the freeway on ramp doing about 35 when a brand new 740I rolled up behind me. The car was so new that temporary plates were still on the car. I watched him and it was obvious that as soon as the freeway entrance hit, he was going to blast around me so that I would envy his machine.

I rolled on the freeway, and he jumped on it to come around. I went to WOT just to see what would happen and I pulled him hard. No way was he going to get by the L.

Being on a Calif. freeway and crowded, I had to shut down by the time I hit 80 MPH. The 740 eventually came by and I watched as he looked into the rear-view to see what it was that pulled his brand new, powerful, expensive car.

My question to car experts: is the 740I a strong, fast car? What other makes would you compare it to regarding performance?

They are great cars, but the performance speed-wise for a 7-series is not great. Something like 8 second 0-60 times (there is a v8 and v12 model). I would be more concerned about getting suprised by an M5 or even a tweaked 540i. The Z8 is another Beemer that you should be wary of...

Thumbs up

Z8's are out... seen 2 so far up here (Silicon Valley)... they look great (better than they do in the mags).

Hey Jim,
740s have a 4.4 Liter V8, with 280hp+. To clear up what DB said, the 740 is a V8, the 750 is a V12. Neither are performance cars, but like almost all German sedans, they have pretty nice power. Their competition is the Mercedes S500/600, but the BMWs have much worse build quality, and hold their value like a sieve. Watch out for M5s, new M3s, Mercedes CL55s, C43s, C55s, S55s, ML55s (yeah, the ugly SUV with red brake calipers), and of course CLK55s. Not to mention my car, the CLK430- watch out for me!

Ando,
I would sure love to pit my C36 up against your CLK430, I think it would be very interesting. I have a chip in it that seems to have added quite a bit of power, but I haven't had much to compare it to save the L. I've beaten an SL600 but I don't know if the guy was just a sleepy driver. What do you think you're doing 0-60? This is all in fun, by the way, and I probably won't have the C36 much longer, but it has been one sweet ride.

Ralley, I would love that. Where did you get your chip, and how much did you pay for it? I'm guessing that I'm doing 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds; perhaps less. I'm interested (sort of) in getting a chip, but the company I would like to work with charges $2K! I can't afford that. But ever since I hit 6000 miles a couple weeks ago, the car has felt much faster. I have very sticky and wide (9.5" rims) Yokohama AVS Sport tires, and I can make them brake loose a little when I punch it (believe me, not an easy task). Email me at: ando976@aol.com and we'll set something up. I know a place; it's a little far away, but good. Talk to you later.

Talking

Putting my Beemer hat on...

Have no fear of the 740i or 840i for that matter they aren't built to blow your socks off, just deliver a confident, supple ride. However do watchout for M3's (not that you'll see a euro like mine ), Z8's,and 850csi's (V12 385hp stock).

Hope everyone saw how the L spanked everything in the recent Truck'in comparision test, including the Merc ML55.

Long reign the L, king of pickups!

Andrew
