Question Chip question?

I want to get a chip but I don't want to have to send it back every week to have it updated and have to use a dyno to get the chip to work right. I just want a chip that you pretty much drop in and forget about. (Except when I go to the dealer) I also don't want to have to unplug the battery every time I flip the switch on the chip. I like the idea of the chips that put the rev limiter at 3000 RPM. I don't every go to the track and my truck will never see the strip but I do want to get the firmer shifts and the piece of mind of the extra ponies that chips have to offer.

I don't want to start any wars or anything like that I just want a chip that I can drop in and forget about.

Thanks for any help

John

What you want is also what I wanted.

Originally I started with the Superchip 6 months ago and that did not fulfill my need. So, I went with another and that worked out alright except that it shift too hard but was OK.

I changed gears and had to send the chips back in to be re-burnt for the change.

I got one of the chips back, the shifts were not as hard but still OK.

I also received back the Superchip that I had sent in to be re-burnt. The Super came with their new program the R9 and I was fantastically happy with everything about it.

I have now put aside all the chips that I have and now only using the new Super. The performance is great. The R9 performs exactly the way I want my L to run.

But now you'll also hear how the chips everyone else use are perfect, the best, the greatest, etc. The bottom line for me is I am happy the way mine works and won't be looking for a better chip and for me that is unusual because I'm always looking for new and better mods.

I concur with Jim,

Get an R9 or Johnny Lightning Chip (it is a Superchip too)

Good luck.

John893,
Where do you live?

No chip will perform equally for all people because our gas formulations are considerably different. I have an R9 and am sending it back for reprogamming due to detonation issues.

Sal's chip is one of the top chips that people are out to get, before the R9 program, there wasn't really a chip that was equal, but either psp or R9 is the way to go, if you go to Sal I suggest ordering a air filter kit, it works really well with your truck(better mpg, Hp, torque, etc.), just my opinion though.

I have run several chips as well. First was the original CUX1 Superchip. This was a very good chip. Then I tried a PSP (Sal) chip b/c I was promised better results and a money-back guarantee. I ran this chip for several months, but since I never had it to the track I didn't realize it would cause detonation problems at full throttle in 3rd gear (over 95mph...which I don't drive that fast...at least not full throttle...on the streets). However, driveability, shift quality, performance was superior compared to the CUX1 or CUX1TRAC programs from Superchips (although the Superchip offering was very acceptable...and didn't cause pinging in high gear/full throttle).

Since getting in touch with Sal is basically impossible (and I'm sure I'll never get my $$ back), I recently installed a Johnny Lightning Superchip. JL has his own "street" and "track" programs. I just got the single program street version. Runs awesome! It is certainly as fast as it is with the PSP chip (which made a solid 20rwhp more than the Superchip). I have not tried an R9 in my truck, so take that into consideration. That seems to be an excellent program, as well, from what people here have reported.

I have literally made 8 passes in my truck in 15 months of ownership, so I don't consider myself a "racer". I want something that offers outstanding street performance, and I believe I have found it. No top-end detonation problems at all with the JL chip.

Hi John893,

As you can see, the R9 Superchip is very highly regarded.

I did want to point one thing out, and that is, anytime we make an "update" to a program, we always provide that update for just the return shipping costs to our customers, so that our customers will have the benefit of any on-going R&D.

The Lightning is the most complex computer-controlled vehicle Ford has ever released to the public, and consequently, there was need fo on-going R&D to find all of the ECU's little "secrets", protection modes, etc., so we could continue to improve performance more and more.

My point is, it isn't an issue of having to send the Superchip back in again and again due to problems, this is simply a service that we offer so that all our customers will receive the full benefit of any future R&D, so they aren't "penalized" in any way just becaue of when they purchased their Superchip. In other words, customer service.

Also, there are various options for these programs, some people want a banging-hard type of upshift, and some want softer shifts, and there are all kinds of mods to be compensated for, so that has to be taken into considertion a also. Another point is that some of these Lightnings are not consistent in engine performacne or in the exact shift characteristics in the 4R100 automatic, and that has on occasion required compensations for those inconsistencies.

The bottom line is it all gets down to give in people what they want for their particular preferences and vehicle configuration. Customer service.

If you have any questions or would like to go over the available options, please feel free to contact us via email or the telephone, our contact info is just below, and we're happy to help.

Best of luck with your Lightning,

I installed the updated R9 chip in my truck last week. No detonation at all (yet). Going to the track this weekend if weather permits. Very happy with the results so far. No loss of boost from shifting too high . shifts are more streetable at part throtle, firmer at WOT. I let a friend drive my truck with the R7, He had a cop behind him, was easy on the gas pulling into traffic and SCREECH it shifts. he wasn't expecting that! got him paraniod LOL. I don't know of anything else I'd want from the R9 chip. The 3000 rpm valet mode sounds like a good idea though. I have the single program chip, $225 + $8 shipping. Mike Troyer, thanks for the Lightning fast service on the upgrade! Lloyd

Cool

I have used the last two versions of the Superchip and have been pretty satisfied with both.

I am suprised not to hear from anyone using the Swanson Chip. Several of the fastest times I have heard of at the local track, Moroso, have been running the Swanson chip & ProM setup. I don't know much about it though, and so cannot personally recommend it.

For service and reliability, IMO, I would recommend the Superchip.

MRBBQMAN:
What do you currently run? What didn't you like with the chips you have used and whose were they, if I may ask? Just curious.

Tim

I prefer the Cape Cod chips for their delicious kettle baked taste, but I also enjoy the occasional nacho cheese Dorrito as well.

OK, here's a Swanson chip owner. Let me state that Iam completely satisfied with the performance with the chip and Pro-M. No pinging at WOT to 120/125. Shifts are soft at part throttle and firm upon pressing the go petal. I blast to 100+ everymorning on the NJ Turnpike. I won't say at what time I do this, cuz you never know who reads these posts.
