Talking Ram-air (cheap!)

Ok I had to do it. Outside temp 49 degrees!!I took off the front panel of my airraid (as others have done) and popped the inside hood release. Instant ram air. With only the hood safety latch attatched I took to the streets. Scratched first to second gears everytime. The power was unbelievable. This is what it must feel like with a chip. Ten plus pounds of boost! No way could I hook up from a standing start. Man, I love the fall in New England!!Oh, by the way, for those interested, I hit 65mph and no the hood did not flip up!

uh Dave, I dont like to preach, but is it worth it? Just imagine what could have happened to you?????? I mean you might have to go spend more money now to get these "go fast" items (chip, N2O, gears, ram-air kit!!!! THE HORROR

Please Dave, for the sake of humanity, drive responsibly, put down your hood, put on your front panel, and go help an old lady across the street!! Forget about about all this speed nonsense - I REPEAT DRIVE LIKE AN ADULT & ALWAYS OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT!!!

Talking

Ever been next to a car or truck when their hood came up? I have. It was a chevy pickup. The guy handled it very well. Not something I'd care to have happen to me.

That soft aluminum hood would not just come up, if it came free from the latch at hwy speed.

I had a '73 Land Cruiser (hard top removed) and both hood latches broke on the freeway at about 70. All that I saw was a wall of green coming at me and it slammed into the windshield. Somehow the windshield remained intact. There were only a couple of cars around me. I managed to lean out and around enough to pull over. It wasn't pretty.

Ok, Ok, I got the message. Thanks for the information. Even with the hood CLOSED the truck is screaming tonight. 47 degrees and all is well.

SVTDAVE: Not a good idea to do, and certainly not a good idea to brag about on this site...

Anyway, my buddy with the NASCAR edition has been experiencing some hood latch problems (can't get it open, once it's open he can't get it closed...). At the 'strip a couple weeks ago he rolled into our pit after completing a 16.5/81 pass and guess what? Hood unlatched and the familiar scary 2-inch gap... This WAS his quickest/fastest pass of the day, but definitely not worth the risk. Can you imagine if that thing had flown open on the track?

It might be safer to try my instant "cowl induction" mod. I pulled the rubber seal between the hood and the cowl (firewall area) and added a small block of wood to slightly lift the rear edge of the hood. I never drive in the rain so I don't have to worry about the rain. On humid days, you can actually see vapor exiting the hood. I'm sure I gained 0.01 sec in the quarter with this mod. Just be careful not to put a permenant crease in the hood, it is soft aluminum.
