Rear Window Leak ??? Help....
Rear Window Leak ??? Help....
Hey All,
MERRY CHRISTMAS..... :santa: :santa: :santa:
Used the L all day and tonight I took it to a xmas party, my son gets in the passenger side and the seat is absolutely SOAKED from Head Rest to seat bottom, this happen "once" before (noticed it the day at V's house) but I assumed I left the window open since it hasnt happened again (or so I thought)
I FRIGGING HATE INTERIOR LEAKS I sold the Stang because of one I can not for the life of me understand how the ENTIRE pass seat can be SOAKED yet I see no other water and nothing on the rugs (floor)
Even if you left a window open (which was not) there would be no way to soak the head rest. Soooooooo that means upper back window or the roof ?
but the headliner seems dry. ANYONE EVER HAVE THIS ???

i have it too!! but mines from the drivers side. it sucks when ive been at work all day and my whole seat is wet on the drive home... mine looks like it comes from the roof or window area(seals around rear window) it builds up on the headliner right above the headrest... i havent had time to pull the head liner out and investigate but im sure you have the same issue i am having. im just glad it hasnt messed up my subs and amp yet. ill post some pics next time it rains but i know ill never find anything unless i pull the headliner. im sure the quick fix is some silicon adhesive we have some pretty heavy duty stuff at work like rtv and b1/2 (stuff we use to seal the windscreens on f15's) but if u have any luck i would like to know!
So I'm not alone... That sucks Mike that yours is on the Drivers Side
at least mine is the Pass Side. I drive to work alone so my guess is it's been doing it since day one and I only noticed it twice since I only happen to have someone on the pass side twice "right after it rained"
Mondo the Windshield wouldnt be the problem in these two cases since there's no water (or wetness) on the Floor or Dash. No as Mike said the only logical answer is the headliner is soaking it up and it's dripping down.
You know now that I think about it I remember when I installed my bed cover a few weeks ago I saw some silicone around the rear window, NOW I KNOW WHY. Being it soaks the seat the way it does (and where it does) the only way it could was if the water came DOWN from the roof ???
In my case I have another spot to look, Ed had some kind of CB Antena on the roof and although the Antena is gone the base and wires are still there, maybe mine is leaking around the hole they drilled in the roof ???
I'll peak at it later and report back, I have to go out later today and as usual I'm using the Lightning (I CAN NOT get enough seat time in it these days)
It's running soooooooooooooo strong
Thanks Mike you gave me some places to start looking
Merry Christmas ALL :santa:

If memory serves me it wasn't long ago that you mentioned the front windshield gasket flopping and making noise on the roof. I think you said you glued it back down but maybe there is room for a small leak. Or maybe you need to seal the rear window the same way?
Seems like it would take a lot of water to soak the entire seat though. That's more than a drip and you would notice that.
An old plumbers trick to check for leaky toilet tank seals is to place some newspaper on the floor after a repair and check it to look for water spots.
Maybe you could take some gray art paper (crape) and use small peace's of masking tape to go around the headliner and or rear window. If you have water seeping in it should make it easier to spot.
I remember my Dad buying a new 63 Ford Galaxy 500. He had that clear plastic seat cover stuff done to both front and rear seats. Hot and sticky in the summer and cold in the winter. After a few years it began to yellow. I think it did more damage than the sun would have.

Rob, I'm sure you've read of issues with the rear window seals, like whistling or even better flapping in the breeze, if it was me I'd have the window pulled and have the gasket replaced, for 100.00 problem solved.

There's one on the rear window and on the cab. I used to subscribe to Alldata but I could not for the life of me remember my password.

wasnt on my L but i did have to replace the back glass on my 97 f150 for this problem. somethin bout way ford made the glasses first few years of the body style. they changed the glasses to try to correct the prob. or thats at least what the winshield guy told me. he said he could reseal it but id be back with it leakin again.
Thanks Everyone
So you have to buy the precription to see the TSB's ?
I'll tell you one thing the leak is "HUGE" and it MUST be delt with immediately
Although yesterday was x-mas me being me I found time later afternoon to spend on the Lightning hehehehe
Jr got enough stuff to keep him busy for yr's, the X was over and he got to spend time with her, so in the afternoon I spend a few hours on the truck.
#1 your right and my god the 99 has the ****iest looking seal and set up I've ever seen
The frame is loose, (you can push it in and out) and you can see "no gasket"
on prob 70% of the 360 circle around it (the rear window). I spend prob 2 hours filling that void in with 100% Silicone (clear) and although I frigging hate the way it looks I had to start somewhere and try something, (I'll prob pull it all out today)
Of course this is only half the seal (the outter half) cause then you have the window itself and the inner seal.
#2, I then noticed the funky inside dome light my son always asked about was actually A RUSTY LENSE so I pulled it off (the dome light assy) hoping it would line up with the antena hole on the roof, (looked like it would but it didnt, was real close though). It was obvious to see there had been water there, and lots of it over time cause the rust would not come off the lense scrubing it with anything and everything I tried including abrasives.
Also if you fish around up in the opening the roof is wet big time (and of course top of head liner). Especially around the antena wire so I sealed the top of the roof around the hole from the outside again hating the fact I was putting silicone on it @$()@$%)@$%)@$%)@$
Put it all together and with my luck it rained a lot last night so after a few hours of rain I went out there in the dark with a flashlight opened the pass door and found it raining inside as much as outside )@$^)@$%)@$%)@$%@)$%@)$&@%$)@%$)@$%@)$%@)$%@)$%@)$ %@$_@%$_@%$)@$%)@$%)@$%)@%)@$%)@$%)@ The water pours from the headliner (just on the edge) directly on the Pass Side Head Rest hence soaking in in and drenchig the entire seat @%$(@$%)@$%)@$%$@)$%@)$%)@$%)@$%)@$)$
Of course that means the leak could be elsewhere and only coming out there
and to boot is was easy enough to see water was also leaking (ok seeping would be a better word) from the INSIDE SEAL and actually it was wet around the inside glass to seal area (all around the entire window)
OH GREAT.................
Mike you hit the nail on the head, the headliner must come out and I'll leave it out a while until I can see exactly where it's coming from. I also need to find a glass guy and obviously have the entire rear window removed and re-sealed inside and out. (also found the 3rd light only has 1 out of 2 screws holding it in, plastic piece broke off one side so the screw is just sitting there in a open oversized hole) CAN I PUT A LATER MOD 3RD LIGHT AND WHERE TO BUY ???
I have off today maybe I'll take the headliner out and see what I can find ???
If I do I need to figure a way to remove the antena and fill that big *** hole it's going to leave. @$)@$_@$%@_$%@_$%@_$_@$

I do have to apoligize and say that you just might be right now that I've investigated it some more. Now that I know water is mid way on the headliner
(hence when I removed the Light Assy the roof was wet) there is the possibility it's leaking in and finding it's way to the rear of the headliner.
I have off the next 3 days and plan on removing the headliner and getting a better look, today I'll investigate the front gasket closely
