Mike,
I am not making my posts to bash on the R9 program. Per our conversation I have been seeing detonation. Recently I have knowticed a lot of posts from other owner that have seen the same results regardless of which chip they are running. I have been trying different brands of gas as you have recomended. I am still having problems. This is the first time I have ever had a vehicle that has had detonation problems, I did not know how slight or severe my case was being that I have no reference. Others have posted that they are having a few pings at higher RPMs where I have heavy pinging at higher RPMs judging by what I have read. I am still going on your recomendation of trying two tanks of Texaco to see if the problem will be corrected. So far the problem is still there. My next plan of action is to remove the chip and see if the detonation still exists. As bad as it is I am afraid that it will remain. I never said that the problems that I am having are the result of the R9 chip. I belive that the R9 is a awesome program and I do not plan to go with another solution. I am looking forward to working with you to resolve the problem. I apologise if I have come off as someone who is bashing the R9 program, I did not mean to come off that way. I will be in touch with you to resolve my particular issues. Thanks for your help Mike.

Swanson reburn on PSP chip, NO detonation.
Swanson is in Ca and calibrates his chips for our "oxygenated" fuel which runs leaner than non-oxy fuel.
On a side note, it takes 2-4% more oxygenated fuel to produce the same power as non-oxy fuel. More power for those who don't have to run oxy-fuel, and better economy.

Hi Sam,
Thank you, I was *so* worried!!
No problem there, and thanks very much for taking the time to point out your intentions, that was very kind of you.
I was just freaked out over the description you gave here of your detonation, and that worried me! That's why I kept calling you on your cell phone until I was at least able to leave a message, as I had visions of a meltdown!
When we spoke on the phone, it seemed a fair next move to try another brand of fuel, like we discussed, going from the Citgo you had put in it after seeing me tell others that Citgo is normally a pretty good fuel in most places, to trying your local Texaco, to see if that took care of it. But when I saw those descriptions in those 2 threads after we spoke on the phone, I was very concerned, and I thought that maybe one or both of us just didn't properly understand our communications in some manner, perhaps, and I just didn't want you running around with any kind of serious detonation. A few pings here and there (and I mean that in the literal sense, a few pings) aren't a big concern, but anything that is consistent, persistent, "major", etc. should have immediate attention.
So that was the nature of my concern, and forgive me if I went a bit overboard, I was a bit shocked & I wanted to get your immediate attention, obviously, just to say let's pull it right now if we're getting that kind of problem. So that was my concern, Sam, and thanks for letting me know.
Give us a shout anytime, and let me know when you're ready for us to adjust that for you.

Mike,
I got your message. Its no problem, it was just a simple miscommunication problem and a lack of knowledge of how to describe my situation on my part. I will give you a call on Monday and we will figure out what we need to do to get me back in gear. I am grateful for all of your attention and help. Talk to you on Monday.

Thanks again gang - I was hoping for some "magic answer" on the pinging, but I guess there is none. Since I'm in Houston and we have 25 L's in the club its not very likely to be gasoline. The stuff I've been using is the same as most others have in their tanks. I've only used high test and its pinging with any kind of super, and pinging with 104 additive.
The most likely culprit seems to be the Pro M unit - or rather the combination of the Pro M with the PSP chip. The tune sheet for the air unit was faxed to Sal, so.... hmmm.
But somehow I get the idea that if I put the stock air box on it would not ping, but I could be wrong about that. I'm taking it to a dealer tomorrow and will report on their findings ~ but don't really expect a lot from them. If they don't find a way to fix it then I'll swap the air box back to stock and see what happens. If that works then it will be down to a choice of which to keep on the truck - chip or Pro unit. Since I have 4:10 gears I have to have some kind of chip on it to adjust the speedo...
Got my fingers crossed!

Just a quick followup...
After over 100 miles with the new Superchip, I am now comfortable enough to turn the radio back on.
That is to say, with the Superchip R9 program, I am no longer worrying about detonation with my Lightning. Not to say that it doesn't happen, because there are still moments when I do get some ping, although they are now very few and far between. But I am confident enough to turn the radio back on and not have to spend all my driving time listening for any detonation sounds.
I'm still going to try out different fuels in the area, to see if I can elimate those sporadic/intermittent pings.
MegaZap: according to Mike Troyer, the Superchip program can be tweaked to allow for successful use of the Pro-M MAF. I would also guess that the PSP chip should be able to be tweaked as well.
As for me, I'm keeping the Superchip installed and flipped to the full R9 program (except when I tow the moving trailer next weekend). I'm going to keep the PSP around, but am considering having a local shop reburn it with a custom program developed just for my truck.

I have a bone stock 2000 Lightning with 2,000 miles on it. I added the R9 SuperChip about two weeks ago. The chip is my ONLY mod. The chip is awesome, I love it. I do get some pinging though. The only time I have noticed pinging is during WOT at the top end of 2nd gear just prior to shifting into 3rd.
I'm burning southern California (Orange County) Union 76 92 octane. I'm going to be switching to see if that clears it up.
FORDSALES, or others in the area with no ping. What brand of gas are you running ??
Thanks........

I fill 'er up with, believe it or not, AM/PM gas. I read in consumer reports (admittedly years ago) that this tested out superior to others offered at the time. Formulas have changed somewhat, so it may be crap now, but no pinging is present, which is good enough for me.

Does anyone know if a plug-in chip is a 'delta' or a 'correction' to the base program... meaning, for example, it adds 4 deg. timing to the stock program. Or is it a new, complete program.
