Post Slow L

I cant get my truck to run a good ET, the best I have done was a 14.21@97 in 95°f. Tonight had great air, nice and cool around 85°f and the truck is running 14.40's@96 with 2.2 60-ft. The only thing I can think of is that I put the Downs Ford Air kit on it. Is it possible that thing slowed me down two tenths? All I hear is people running high 13's stock, why cant my truck run a ****** number. I'm about to invest in a chip and tires, but it would be nice to get in the 13's without them. Anyone got a clue why my L is a dog.

Take shoe polish and draw white line on your rear tires, have someone tape your next launch. I bet you are spinning like crazy. The 60 foot times are the give away.

There are about 10 or so lightnings in this area that all run in HOT texas weather sometimes on poor tracks, and the only time we have seen 14.3+ times is when the boost is gone or the tires are spinning bad.

Modd69, My 2K L ran 14.8-9's with 300 miles(in 95 degree weather) when I first got it. instaled a chip & filter, same temp, 800 miles, knocked a full second off. Back to track on a cooler day 13.5-6's. let it cool off for about 45 minutes to an hour, 13.41. 85 degrees is cool for AZ, but keep in mind almost everybody on this board lives in a cooler climate, & has more opportunitys to get a cool run in. people on this board don't seem to like the downs, but it may not be the problem. maybe You are losing traction now! Hey Modd69, the 2.2 60ft isnt too good, you should be in the 2.0 area. Also 85 is way too hot, once the temps get down to the low 70's-60's you will into the 13's! Does the truck feel better after putting on your Downs intake??? If it does it most likely helped. I'm still waiting on a price from Discount on the MT streets, the guy called & left a message, but he said it sounded like they werent going to be open yesturday. SO will find out on monday. I also called a few more Discount Tire store's to see who is going to give me a better price!
Dont worry we'll get your truck into the 13's, heck I want to run a 13.0-13.2 with what I have + the MT's

If (when) you get the chip you will love it, just the shifts alone are worth it!!!

BTW who did you beat, how many runs did you get, were there a lot of people??

Thanks for the reply's, I was really frustrated last night. I looked back at my best run and noticed my 60-ft time was a 2.09, I guess that's good for knocking two tenths off at the finish line. I know that I spinn the wheels, because I have to throttle it off the line to keep the spin to a minimum. My goal is for 1.8 60-ft times, I think I can get close with a tire.

Yoda, my mission today is to find us a set of tires. I really need a chip and have been looking into the superchip and PSP. I like the Idea of a 4-way psp chip, but you know the deal with psp. the superchip R9 is getting all kinds of hype, but am not sure if its what I want. Anyhow, I'll keep the faith that one day I'll bust a good number at the track. I guess the one good thing about my track performance is I'm really consistant. Oh and It was crazy last night, I got two runs in and was there for 3 hrs. There is one guy who works there that hasn't got a clue on how to pull cars from the staging lanes. Sorry I didn't put out a notice that I was going, it was a spur of the moment idea.

On a typical 13-sec vehicle, .20x in 60' time will be more like .30-.35 on the top end.

Also, I am glad 98 SVT Cobra made the point about track elevation and air quality. This won't affect 60's much, but it will _definitely_ have an affect over a 1/4 mile race.

Guys who race in 40-50^F, baro. pressure above 30.xx" all the time have it good. This is like the Muscle Mustangs article where their bone stock L ran 13.37. Sure, that is an awesome time, no matter the conditions, but air conditions make a huge difference.

I would not be disappointed in low-14s in the heat with a near-bone stock L. Adding a chip will do more than a filter combo.

Yoda,

That's BS. I've BEEN to Dagobah, and there's no place on that planet over 200 feet above sea level. You should have made better times than that.

mod69,
You don't say how many miles you have on your truck, but these motors are very tight until you get about 3000 miles on them. Best I ran bone stock was 14.1 @ 97 MPH in 95+ degree heat at 3900 miles. A chip and filter will make a huge difference, as will better air. Good track prep is the key to hooking up on the stock tires. Having lurked for awhile before I registered, and seeing all the great times posted, I initially thought my truck was "slow" too.

Hey Modd69. I lost about .2 when I put a filter kit on too. I tried the psp and a home made one and both hurt my power and it wasnt from more wheel spin either. I still cant figure it out because no one else ever got slower with the filter kit. I put the Pro m maf on now and a superchip and it really runs great. If you are losing power and not just spinning more with the filter I would try the pro m. Maybe your truck is just like mine in that the filter is actually making it slower.

Cool

Bad Pit,

Mine did the same thing with a K&N replacement filter. I ran more than once to confirm it. Went from a 14.19 (stock filter) to a 14.35 Avg (K&N filter). I couldn't believe it. I then put a Magnaflow Straight thru muffler on it and went back to the track. I picked up .2 of a second with K&N over the stock filter. Apparently when you let more air in you also have to let it out with the stock tuning. Try to do one step at a time instead of throwing a bunch of stuff at all at once. That way you know what's hurting and what's helping. I'm now running 13.84 (same wheather conditions) with a Magnaflow, K&N filter with extra hole cut in bottom of airbox and Splitfire plugs.

Don't forget to consider track elevation. All those people posting real good times are at low elevations (my track is at 830'). Also, 85 is not cool for here, my stock 13.70 passes were at temps below 65. A few days ago a real low pressure system moved thru the area. Truck slowed to 14.20 with a chip that has run consistent 13.5-13.6. I have unfortunately seen a few L's (a 99 and 00) that were very hard pressed to break a 14.4 on days I ran 13.8-13.9 stock. Good luck with your truck.
