Cool Superchip R9 and Airraid installed tonight!

I know you guys have seen this type of post before but ah what the hell...

Just installed the goods and damn I am impressed! Got an extra 2 lbs of boost on the fake-o-boost meter (shows 10 lbs) and the chip is just amazing!

Before from a dead standstill on brand new fresh concrete, the real good grabbing stuff, you know the type. I could not even spin first at all much less a scratch in 2nd. Well now it costs me about $7.36 in rubber everytime I floor it from a dead stop! 2nd gear chirps for everyone! The blower just screams and full throttle shifting @ 5800 rpms is real good stuff.

I had just washed the truck before I did all of this silly upgrading and after I was done testing the entire front end of the truck was covered with a variety of dead bugs, so there are some negative side effects to these modifications unfortunately.

I am planning to make a trip to the dyno next Saturday to see what kind of improvements have been made. I took it in last weekend totally bone stock and pulled a best of 342rwhp and 417rwtq so I am hoping for big numbers!

I will post scans of all the dyno sheets for you guys when I finally get time to scan them in. I know I promised that before, it will happen as soon as I get the postmods data.

Happy trucking everyone!
I'm going to go find me some vettes to play with!!

Sam

Snake,
The improvement from even the R7 chip is very good.
Right about the shifts....The R7 was almost like having a shift kit in the truck, but the R9 is very mellow at lower throttle and just as stiff at WOT.
One other improvement, besides a little better low end power is the idle is better than before. Even though it idled at about 750 rpm it still felt like it was trying to push you at stops. Now it's at about 550 and is just as nice and smooth as a ......well, you know.

Hello all..

This is a question for R9 Superchip owners ( with 99 L's ) Does the chip fix the down shift problem. ie. Will it downshift back into first over 25 mph. ?

Much thanks..

SVTSNAKE,

Around town the shifts are pretty much stock. Very smooth. When you start to increase throttle the shifting becomes harder.

All,

The literature that came with the superchip recomend that you go 1000 miles before the program takes full effect. I am wondering if I should wait a while before taking the truck back to the dyno to make sure everything has taken effect. Any thoughts guys?

Hi Sam,

Great post!

I did want to make a couple of quick points, if I may...

First, it sounds like your tach may be a bit off, as the full-throttle upshift point is actually set at about 5450 rpms. If your engine actually ever hit as much as 5650 rpms during a full-throttle upshift, the "boost-dump" mode would engage, and immediately dump all boost! That is why we set it at about 5450 in the R9 program, so that even those Lightnings with a too-small orifice size in the pressure control solenoid of the transmission, which will cause a later upshift, will not be able to hit that boost-dump point. We have not removed that protection mode, it's still there and fully functional. We simply set the upshift point so that it can't be hit.

Also, for those who are curious about this, just like you mentioned Sam, the part-throttle upshifts don't start to get firm until you are into the throttle a good bit, so that the vehicle can still be driven in the rain without having to worry about spinning the rear wheels & swapping ends during an upshift in the middle of a turn, for example. So the smooth character of the vehicle is not spoiled when driven conservatively, and then it will firm up progressively as you give it more throttle, just like they should. In other words, the part-throttle shifting is lighter than in the R7 program, for those of you who have used R7 and know it's shift feel.

Last, we have set the program to allow a downshift into 1st gear at speeds above 25 mph. If the orifice size in the PCS is correct, it will do that up to 40 mph, and that is a lot of fun for rolling starts. If the orifice size is a bit too small, which we've seen, then it might only do it up to say, 35 or 38 mph, etc., as some of them stock won't do it over about 15 mph due to that same orifice sizing issue.

If anyone has specific questions or would like to go over this in greater detail, please feel free to give us a call.

Have fun Sam!

Question

Sam,

Any chance you can make it Hallsville on Sat? Sounds like there will be a lot of L owners there, and the track is outstanding...at least it was when I went there back in Feb. '00

Superchips Distributor, I purchased a CUX/R7 chip from You a week before these R9 chips were hitting the streets. when I asked about them, You said they were only a rumor. My chip makes My truck shift at 5900 RPM on the tach, I have lost boost at least 15 times since I got it. I have the timeslips to prove it. 16.39! not gonna win a trophy with this. Can My chip be upgraded to the R9 program free as others said or do I need a new chip? hopefully it will cure this problem. Lloyd

Sorry I dont think I will be able to make it. I didnt hear about it till I ran into Doug at Bankston yesterday evening. I totally ignored the thread because I never heard of Hallsville. I have already made other plans. Oh well

Hey Mike!

At WOT the tach does show that it topping off and then shifting between 5650-5800. The boost does not drop off. The tach must be a little off but it wouldnt be the first gague that Ford put out that was a little off

SCC2000L,
I was wondering how firm the shifts are at 1/4, 1/2, WOT? Just wondering I just don't want to get beat up by the shifts cruising around. Thanks.

Snake,

I have the same setup on my 99. Around town under 1/4 throttle, it is real doscile, just a ton more power at the lower end. 1/2 throttle and it starts to hit harder and it lurches forward when it shifts

I am able to seriously bark 2nd and sometimes 3rd. My tread is still good too. I kicked it down at about 70 on the highway last night and got a "scratch" on both kick-down and upshift at ~80 mph. Gotta like that. Scared the crap outta some moron in a Jeep Wrangler too.

The R9 ROCKS!!!!

Damn,
Now I've got to go buy an aftermarket tach. Mine shows shifts at 5700-5800 too.
