I am having the same pinging problems with my R9 on the 2000L. In third and fourth gear above 4000 rpms I get some pretty bad pinging. I am going to to try a couple different brands of gas to see if that will correct it. If not I guess I will have to send it back in and have it "detuned" a bit.

Question

I am a proud owner of an R9 Superchip and have not noticed any pinging. I use Sunoco 94 octane consistently. Wiat until you drive your L without it. What a difference....still fast but not AS fast

However, I am now a member of the "Faulty Intercooler" club It IS NOT going in the shop until AFTER the USGP (my plate is Indy F1) Gomer ain't gonna be a paradin 'round Indy with my baby.. Guess I gotta keep my foot out of it. yeah right..

SCC,

Interesting notes. Leads me to a question.

Exactly what did the speedo register when you noticed pinging in 4th gear @ 4000 rpm?

Hi Guys,

A couple of points...

Frist, as we can see from the posts here, most are not experiencing detonation with the R9 program, even on California 92 octane, but then there are a couple who are experiencing this. What you'll want to do is first, stay away from the octane boosters if you can, just see which premium brand in your area gives the best results and if that takes care of it, fine. But if not, then you will need to have an adjustment done, so if this contines, let us know. If any of you are running a Pro-M 80mm mass airflow unit, we have started to see that some of them are not consistent in their calibrations, and can cause the motor to go a bit lean, and if so, then more fuel will need to be added. In R9, there is still extra fuel there, the motor is plenty rich, richer than absolute peak power could be made at, but errant calibrations (meaning inconsistencies, which we are seeing more often now as time goes on) in the Pro-M units can cause us to need to add a bit more fuel for sustained WOT (wide-open throttle) operation. The Pro-M 80mm units can lean the motor out anywhere from .5 (a half a point in the A/F ratio, say, going from 11.2:1 to 11.7:1 for example, not a concern), to as much as 2.0 (2 points). There are a number of Lightning owners out here running the Pro-M MAF, and in previous programs it wasn't an issue. In R9, if the MAF isn't right on it's calibration, then some fuel may need to be added if you're getting detonation.

The point being, this could be a fuel quality issue, or it may be due to a Pro-M MAF that needs a bit more fuel to dial it in.

In R9 to answer another question, in Position 2, the full performance program, torque converter lockup is deleted during WOT operation, but it is there on part-throttle operation, so you can drive it on the street and not get heat build-up in the transmission, and still get the benefit at the strip, it's a very nice calibration.

With regards to skydive's comments, we haven't seen any "pattern" of this with the R9 program, so I don't know if that characteristic is something that is related to the program in your case or not. I can only tell you we don't have any patterns of this reported to us so far that is eliminated when the chip is removed. If it is related, since you're in the area it should be easy to check out once you've isolated it, if that happens, so let us know in email, or give us a call, etc.

If it is the coil, I wonder where the chip plays in to the formula, in that everyone with the problem has one thing in common - a chip. Interestingly, the chap that had the coil replaced indicated that his truck now runs smoothly, however he had not yet put his chip back in due to the reprogram of his computer. It would have been an interesting experiment to see how the truck ran with the chip with his old program.

Couple of more questions. When a flip chip is switched, when does the new program take affect? The way I understand it is that you have to stop and turn off truck, switch programs, then restart. Is this true? Also is there a learning curve on these to take full advantage of the program (when the chip is just installed, and when you flip between the programs)?

I also have the uneven running at a steady throttle in third that Skydive69 has.

Any thought Mike?

I also noticed this morning while running side 2 (CUX1TRAX9) on the street a slight missing or burble in third before it went into 4th. I have not noticed this on side 1 (CUX1R9). I thought the only differences between these two programs were shift firmness, shift point, and converter not locking up at WOT on side 2. Any thoughts?

HOpe it is not my imagination, but ran it in stock position today, and then later switched back to R9 program. I detected the burble running the R9 program at steady throttle in third gear at about 40 just under 2000 rpm. Did not notice that in stock. I tried to replicate exact condition by not allowing it to go into overdrive (as the R9 program does), and drive at steady throttle. Seemed smooth in stock. I wonder if it is the fuel mixture causing the burble. It couldn't be slicker on acceleration with either program whether WOT or partial throttle. Of course I would do anything to miss the agony of a trip to the dealership and all of the inherent inconvenience and aggravation.

Hi shonut,

Yes, you do need to turn the motor off to flip the switch. Most changes happen fairly quickly, but it can take up to 50-100 miles for the new program to in effect completely overwrite the previous program still sitting there in memory, unless the battery is disconnected. It is not necessary to disconnect the battery when you flip the switch, unless you want to do back-to-back comparisons at the drag strip for example; in which case, you would want to do the disconnect to to get a complete fresh program load, we have to do the same thing anytime a change is made on the dyno, to accurately determine the exact results of those changes.

For those of you now commenting on this symptom you're noticing on part-throttle, I'll make mention of this to the engineer, and see what he has to say about this. We may want to get Sandy's truck back in and see what's going on, since he lives close by and seems to be experiencing this. This is still being reported by only a very few people out of the hundreds already running R9, so I wonder if it's yet another inconsistency in some of these Lightnigs, as we've certainly seen enough examples of inconsistencies here and there from time to time, but we'll get to the bottom of it as we always do.

The first step in each case is to completely remove the Superchip, and then do a battery disconnect to clear the computer's memory, and see if this eliminates those symptoms entirely. This *has* to be done in each vehicle, in order to eliminate bad coil packs being the possible culprit, as they have been happening, and they give the same basic symptom as is being reported here. And then if so, then I think we need to get a Lightning in that is exhibiting this, so it can be diagnosed properly. Luckily Sandy does live close to the Superchips development facility, so this should be relatively easy to take a look at.

I too ran into detonation at WOT in third at the end of the track, never on the street. I had less than 1/8 tank of gas and thought that maybe this had something to do with it. I purchased 5 gallons of 100 octane racing fuel and had no problems the rest of the night. Mike- what do you think? Was it because of low fuel? If I had filled with regular 94 octane would I still have had detonation? Do I need to have the chip reburned since I do have a Pro M Mass on my truck? Let me know.
