Thumbs down Problems After Pro-M Install

I went to the track last night and had my first problem!I just installed the Pro-M and wanted to try it out.I have a superchip,so I mixed race fuel to get me at 100 octane and set the chip on strip side. The track was still wet on the end so they were running 1/8 mile and checking every 10 minutes or so to see if it was dry yet.So I pulled my truck over to let it cool down.About an hour later they opened the track for 1/4 mile and I made my first run.I had a pretty good launch at 2.003 60' and the truck felt good until it was close to it's shift point between second and third,it starts cutting out.I shut it down and gave up the run.I gave it another run, this time on the street side of the chip with the same problem.I could not get the truck to shift out of second until I backed off the throttle twice and it shifted. It was missing at this point and kept missing after it hit third gear.I backed off just before I went through the traps at 13.8 sec. Before the Pro-M add I ran a 13.7 with no problems. The A/F mix is set at 11.7 with the superchip.Superchip installed the chip.It ran fine before the Pro-M install.I feel with some good air the truck with out the Pro-M will run about 13.5 Do you think I need to reburn the chip now with the Pro-M?I installed the Pro-M correctly.Any thoughts on this problem?I will call Superchips Monday when they open to see what they think.Any feedback will be appreciated.

Y2KBLKLITNIN,

Take some advice and pull the fuel filter and examine it closely. Look for little black specs that look like graphite in the fuel. If they are there, you will have to drain the fuel tank, replace the filter and pray you don't have any of that crud in the injectors.

Apparently, high octane unleaded has an additive that can get cooked out of it when left in the heat and sun for even a little while. This is what happened to me at FFW in May, my truck was acting the exact same way.
It ran just fine at partial throttle, but as soon as the fuel demand went up, the fuel filter wasn't able to pass enough fuel to the engine and it was starving, causing it bog down and act squirrely.

$900 later, after dismantling and cleaning the entire fuel system, the problem went away. I was freaking for a while because I wanted to blame everything else before I thought of the most simple, basic cause and look there.

Check it out, you might be surprised!

which race fuel were you using. I believe there are two formulations BP and Sunoco. They are made differently and both have theie edocencacies. Sunoco has a website and an 800 number where you can call and get instructions for care of their race fuel. It will cook in a container in the sun and turn to trash in about 4 hours. It's fairly stable in you tank when mixed with normal gasoline for serveral days.

Wyldman...Noelvm...Bad Pit...BABOLT... Thanks for the help!I will check a few things tomorrow.I will check and see if it is still missing between second and third shift at WOT.The truck was missing bad in the track and street mode last night at high rpm between second and third shift..I will check the fuel filter first!I was using Sunoco race fuel.I got it at the track about an hour and a half before I ran.The truck ran fine today around town, but I did not have the chance to WOT through the gears.I ran it in first gear at high rpm and did not miss any.Tomorrow after checking the fuel filter, I will take it out for a run in the country. If I am still getting this I will put the OEM chip back in.It was acting as if it was starving of fuel! But I am not sure as other things can give you that same feel.I will keep you posted of what I find out. Thanks again.

PS, I have read the baked out racing fuel story on other BBs as well. Sounds like the best place to start.

Y2K,
You might also check and make sure that all the hoses are still attached to the inlet tube. If the motor is getting any variance in air that the MAF is not monitoring, the truck will act strange, miss and sputter.

I installed my pro m yesterday. The truck seems to run stronger with lots more blower whine. I have the superchip trac program too. I havent tried it on the trac side yet though. I did notice I was only getting 7 pounds of boost. The truck seems to be putting out more hp though.

Cool

Hey Guys!

Thanks for the kind words/thoughts. Between trying to get the Black Beast off of the DL and finding work, I have been a busy, busy boy. I'm still around and really hard to get rid of, like a bad rash, and twice as mean.

The problem was the AF mix because of the Pro-m breathing so much better!Jay at Superchips reburned the chip and it is fine now.He said the Pro-M changes the AF mix about 2 points. So if I was at 11.7 before the mod,I was at about 13.7 after the install! So anyone that has a chip installed and added a Pro-M MAF or any other MAF,make sure you have your chip adjusted for the extra air!You get to lean and you can have some problems.I am going to check my plugs to see if I did any damage. Thank you for all the feedback on this problem!

Man I hope mine isnt running too lean. I just put a post on here - this ****** lightning just moves. Man it runs great. Do you guys think I need a reburn on the chip? I hate to mess with anything the way it is running.

Leaner is faster, but Johnny Lightning told me today that I will need a reburn to run his chip w/ the Pro-M, too.

InjectTech also warned that the chip had to be modded for the Pro-M, so this is true for all chips, AFAIK.

Injection is nice, but I'd rather be blown.

Noelvm..and anyone that purchased PRO-M.I understand what you read, but I just left the Superchips factory today and I they fixed the problem.BABOLT emailed me and told me that was the problem.I thought that was the problem when I first post this issue!BABOLT was right! So if you do not know how lean you are running, you better find out! That or take a chance and let FORD tell you that they will not honor your warranty because you are running too lean!I will take the attitude of measure twice and cut once! Please be careful!!!
