I worked for a grouchy old man. A very smart one, but he sure can be grouchy. I think he made lots of dough mining for Uranium in the 50s. One day he was telling the guys that they were going to do all this stuff that you are talking about now. Just like the hazard light retro-fitting. My 66 Chevy has that aftermarket hazard light.

Just remember, a government that is bug enough to give you everything you need, is big enough to take everything away.

It is for reasons like this that I have that 66 Chevy. I don't think I will ever part with it.

Thumbs down

This subject has come up on other boards. From what I've gathered sattelites tracks your speed and if you go to fast it sends a signal to your cars computer to cut back on the throttle.

Not possible here? Don't bet on it. Want cheaper insurance rates, install the new "Big Brother" chip and cut your rates in half. How many soccer mom's will beat a path to that? When it gets to be enough so the one's that don't have it(why not if you are a law abiding citizen?) start getting outrageous insurance premiums. These a$$holes that gnaw away at our freedoms know they can win it by attrition.

People who give up freedom for security end up with neither.

It a shame. They are now outfitting cell-phones with GPS chips. They will be in the cars standard, and they will be able to track you that way! The other down side is that they will sell the # to companys, lets say like McD's. You will be a couple of miles away, and you will get a call saying, would you like a big mac, if you come now you can save 10cents. The technology is already there, they are only working on the "billing" technology.

What a lovely future we have to look forward to. lets see, they will now monitor our speed via satalite, make us all get rid of out gas engines and use electric, Give out are location and codes so that we can get more "tele-marketers".

HWYtoL and others:

I found one of my old magazines, and it was called a Tacho-Graph and it operated exactly as you described it. It is apparently still in use today, but is now computerized as others have described on this thread.

Kind of interesting for me, pretty much a dyed in the wool conservative, but even I am becoming a little bit concerned about the applications of some of our modern technology.

As an example, as I am typing this, I have gotten three unsolicited Instant Messages from porno sites. This apparently because I stupidly opened one of their files a year or so ago and they obviously sold my AOL addie to all the rest of that type of site.

Don't get me wrong on this, but it would not surprise me if my registering on that firingline.com site, which I did for grins, has probably gotten me into some government data base as well.

I'm maybe beginning to feel that maybe all this progress may not be as good as it is cracked up to be. Who knows?

Hwy_2_L, the tri-corder is nothing new.
Kirk had Bones taking tri-corder readings back in the sixties.

I believe it is reported that GM trucks have this as of now. Records the final 10 secs or so before a crash, even the voices, in TN the most heard comments were "Here, hold my beer, Watch This!"

Back when the OBD-II started making it's way into cars I read that the next version, OBD-III, is going to include the speed and location monitor/transmitter as well as an emissions monitor. Don't need emissions testing centers if the car or truck is already reporting to the state. e-mail is also monitored, looking for words like gun or bomb. Wondering how far they are willing to go? Right now there is a bill in congress which, if passed, will mandate the destruction of ALL ex-military equipment, vehicles, and aircraft with few exceptions. It's passed the house of representatives.
I wonder if the chip manufacturers can trick the sensors...

Yet another example of how there is too much big government intruding into our lives.

It seems like the natural progression of all governments is to relentlessly acquire power. Power to tax, power to regulate, power to intimidate, power to imprison, and eventually the power to kill.

We saw ample of examples of this in the just past century where it was estimated at least 141,000,000 people where murdered by the "own governments". And, one thing most of these people had in common was that they where mostly unarmed. These numbers come from a recent University of Hawaii study that was done. It is entitled, "Death By Government" authored by Prof. Rummel, and is in book form.

That is why Thomas Jefferson said, "The price of Freedom is eternal vigilance."

Down south here in Houston you can blow thru them at 70. They tried sticking up some voluntary speed signs in Yellow and black (not official) for 45 and caused nothing but wrecks and complaints. You can go thru up to 78 and not trip the photo mechanism. I hit it at 80 one day, but I never go a ticket but my radar detector went off and I think it took my picture.

I totally agree with Dustoff. Bigger and bigger government=lesser and lesser freedoms for us all. Don't want bigger government? Don't vote for Al Gore.
