Post For those with 4.10's >>

I just had my gears put in. The guy that did them has a reputaion for being a "Whiz" at gears. Let me tell you, the gears are whisper quiet after about 250 miles and two drag srip passes. He spoke of being involved in the developement of the shim kit; and, was glad to do mine and finally see if the main shim was a good starting point. It turns out to be a bit too thick and had to be ground down some. Hopefully, any kits in the near future will have a thinner main shim to make install easier on those, ahem, less experienced rearend installers. I don't see why anyone could not like 4.10's. I've got a question. I just read in the trans fluid post that the Lightning differential had synthetic lube from the factory. I don't think the guy put synthetics in after he did my gears. I've heard that synthetics are not the best for new parts breakin. Should I go to synthetic lube after a thousand miles or so; or, not worry about it.

Following is what I was told by the gear experts that put mine in.

They do not recommend putting in syn. in the rear end. Even thought syn. has good cooling properties it does not stick as well as dino oil. Where as syn. will drain off, dino is less likely to.

I called RedLine and they said their syn. does stick because of some additive they include in the oil.

The gear experts have been in business for many, many years and have changed out a number of L's.

So, who's to be belived. If the gear people are to be than one maybe should not use syn. for the engine.

I will also be watching this thread for more info.

Hey Gents,
I am going to change gears soon and have a couple of questions. (Yes I have read the faq)
I am torn be tween going 373's or 410's. I feel the 410's would make the engine rev too high at hiway speeds. (I take a few trips to the Keys and to Orlando every year.) I also want to get the best performance.
If I go 373's does it change the holeshot much from the 355's. Can the tires stick with the 410's. I can hardly keep 'em from smoking now with the oe's.
God I love this truck.
Must go faster......must go faster....mus....

I don't know about you; but, I seem to get my best times if I only load the drivetrain to about 800-900 rpm and floor it moderately aggresive on the third amber. What's wierd, is that, I didn't notice my truck getting out of hand on the two passes that I made last night with the 4.10's. I had 4.10's in my 97 SS and you REALLY noticed the ratio change from 3.42 to 4.10, bigtime. On the L, it almost feels like 3.73; and, yes, I did check to make sure they are 4.10's.

BadBolt,

Who did your gears? I need to find an installer in the area.

Also, if you don't mind my asking, what was the installed price?

Mobil has an 800 number. Call them and see what they say. Personally I think synthetic fluids are the greatest thing since sliced bread. My .02 worth.

I paid $240. He provided the fric mod and lube. I don't know if he would do the job because he spoke of only doing jobs when he needed the money. He's getting married next week and is going on an extended vacation. What I can do is try and contact him after this and see if he's interested in the work, if you want me to try.

I don't have aftermarket gears but I think that if Ford put Syn in it from the factory, then that is what I would use. The dino lube isn't bad either by any means. Did he use FMS gears for the install? Also, did you get a chip for the shift fix with new gears?

BadBolt, do you have a chip? If not, you need to get one. If you have one, you need to get it reburned for the 4.10s. That is the only way you can correct your speedometer, but, more important, until you do your truck won't run as good as with stock gears because your shifts will be way too early. After I got my 4.10s the truck ran like ***** until I got Swanson to install a chip; now it runs like a stripe assed ape. If you need futher explanation there is a thread devoted to stripe assed apes.

I used Precision Gear, I've heard they are what Ford used as FMS part. I'm getting my chip setup right now. Just waiting for the call to pick up. I'll go to synthetic after a few miles.

Yes, I'm burning a new chip for the gears. I'm going with a local guy. I got to get this new chip a.s.a.p. so as not to rack up accellerated miles from the gears. Anyone interested in a PSP Dual flipper for $285 shipped to your door. It's good for .5 off your E.T. with the WOT pinging taken out. Just got it back from Sal. The fix didn't affect the performance.

that's great, bad, after you get the chip you will not confuse your 4.10s with 3.73s.

I happen to have a Swanson's for sale that was set up for the 4.10's. Good chip and inexpensive.

Let me know
