Where's the boost?
Earlier today I went to give a ride to a friend, & when I stomped it the boost was at zero & wouldn't come up at all. stop for the next light, green light go boost is back no problem. it did this a couple times, whats up with it? Lloyd
Chipped? It happens occasionally. Trans oil temp too high or bump the rev limiter are the usual reasons.

My Lightning is doing the same thing, but not every time. Same deal. "It happens occasionally" is not going to cut it. This is no good for racing when you don't know whether it'll make it past the 1-2 shift!! I've got a Superchip with a custom program to run with my Pro-M. I called Superchips about the problem on 8/10 before I left for a 2-week vacation, and they acted like it was the 1st time they had ever heard of the problem. Are there guys out there with other aftermarket chips encountering the same problem? It may be a rev-limit deal, or it may be a Ford cut-off for excessive boost? (Mine's showing 12-13 lbs on the factory gauge, maybe the computer shuts down fuel & air if you boost too high??) Another thing, I think the "firming-up" of the shifts is beyond rediculous. My drag-pack '69 428SCJ Fairlane shifts FIRM. My lightning shifts REDICULOUSLY firm, beyond any effective performance need. It's embarrassing almost. I'm thinking of sending mine back to be re-calibrated and to get the glitch with the boost cut-out fixed
I talked to Mike T today about the shifting, for the CUX2R7 program, and they have a soft shift program that at part throttle it "softens" the shift but at full throttle you get all the benfits of the latest program.
I am sending mine back today will let you know.

It's even more fun at the track when you do a nice little tire smoke for your opponent and burn up to the staging area, lights come down and you launch with no boost and turn a 16 second 1/4 mile, helmet and all.

Lloyd,
It's relatively rare, with only a few trucks exhibiting this characteristic, and that's most likley why you got the response you did. The only person at Superchips who knows about this is the engineer who has been dedicated to doing all the work on the programs for the past 6 months or so, and is a friend of mine.
The reason for the boost dump is an upshift @ 5650 rpm or above, and the program instruction has it set lower than that, of course. However, these 4R100's are not very consistent, and there are a few of them, both 99's and 00's, that have a too-small orifice size in the PCS (pressure control solenoid) which makes the transmission not able to flow enough fluid *volume* at highest line pressures. When that happens, you can get a slightly delayed upshift, and during that time the engine has enough time to hit the boost dump rpm point during the upshift, going 50-100 rpm higher than it normally does.
For example, one customer of ours this only happens to him if he does a full-throttle downshift into 1st gear at 35+ mph, it won't do it from a standing start. Then I have another customer just the opposite, whose truck won't exhibit this characteristic unless it is from a standing start. Again, inconsistent. Out of many hundreds of Lightnings running those programs, only a very few (less than 40-50 for both model years) have this problem, and we have no way of knowing which ones will until it happens, we don't have a crystal ball to gaze into the future with.
This can be easily taken care of by doing 1 of 3 things: disconnecting the boost popoff valve, installing a shift kit (part of which procedure is to open up that orifice), or having the chip reprogrammed to lower the upshift point to compensate for your transmission's "quirks".
Very easily identified, & easily taken care of.

Mike, It seems to happen after a good burnout, wide open throttle. would disconnecting the boost valve cause problems? I seen a shift at 5900 rpms with no pressure loss. it only happens once in a while. bad for racing though. Lloyd
Mike,
Since this thread is covering chip characteristics, can you answer a few questions for my and others benefit.
I just got my Super Chip (two position:Trans only/Full Performance) CUX2R7 for my 200 L from you last week. Fantastic improvement in power and transmission management. Wish there were other changes that could accomplish similar bang for the buck improvements.
While I have set up past cars with with shift kits and am comfortable with hard shifts, the part throttle aspect may some day be a nuisance. Does your fix for this have any negative impact on full throttle performance? Can not imagine a need for shift kit, shifts are quick and hard without delay on throttle enduced downshifts and upshifts that I endured with past AODE cars.
Have had a few rare pings if not using a small amount of octane booster, does occasional use of booster teach the computer to input more advance?
Does it matter that I am using 160F thermostat?
Will program need changes with addition of 80mm Pro-M? I have heard no.
Did I understand you correctly in that you do not offer a program specifically for higher octane fuels? Some are under the impression that the CUX2R7 is a track only program?
Thanks again for a great product and service, having it on my doorstep in 24 hours so I could use it at Cresson SVT On-Track event was a definite plus.

Mike, I e-mailed you last night, and for good measure, I'm posting now. Where do I find the boost popoff valve, and is disconnecting it simply a matter of unplugging the connector and wrapping/securing it?
bobcmt, I ordered my superchip through Powered by Ford, and it was (so they told me) altered to account for the 80mm Pro-M that I already had installed on my truck. I payed extra for the custom (Pro-M) chip. All I know is that performance seems great, and I have no pinging on Premium unleaded. Have yet to find time to run at the track, and I wanted to get this boost popoff problem my truck has resolved before heading to G'ville as well. Maybe it's my imagination, but the partial throttle shifts seem to be mellowing a bit over time. Maybe it's all in my head, or maybe those sledgehammer shifts at 1/4 throttle have already started to ****-out my tranny??!!!????

Please be advised. Mike has told me he can not do a custom burn on his chips. I personally really liked the shifting on the CUX2R7 program. It does cause detonation in my truck though. Mike has deduced this was due to the poor gas quality in Phoenix. I ask if he could set the timing a little and leave the rest as is. This wasn't an option because it would require a custom burn. I'm running CUX2R2 program now. Kind of a let down after the R7, but at least I know my truck will hold together.
