Question on Fuel Pumps

I was helping a friend who has replaced the fuel pump on his F150 4 times. I suggested whether he had checked whether the fuel pickup may be coming off as has happened with the Lightnings. Do the regular F150's have the same fuel pumps as the Lightning? He want to install an external fuel pump. Has anyone with a Lightning done this? Any tips are appreciated.

He installed a pressure gauge on the fuel rail and complains that he cannot use passing gear since it bogs down. He has replaced the fuel filter several times as well. Thanks for the response.

could be the pressure regulator on the fuel rail is faulty, not allowing the FP to increse as it should...

As far as I can remember, only the L's have twin fuel pumps and notorious Y-connection failure, correct me if I'm wrong.

According to the Ford wiring diagram manual, only L's have dual pumps.

Did the problem start when he installed the pressure gauge? What are the gauge readings?

Sounds like he might need to check for a twisted fuel line like Sal found on a truck a couple weeks ago.
