Cool killed a hog yesterday

now before all you Harley riders get your knickers in a knot and start telling me how fast YOUR bike is, i hereby acknowledge that there are a plethora of hogs that will humble, if not embarrass, a Lightning. however, this guy yesterday was not one of them. i said i wasn't going to street race any more, i don't want my license suspended, but this was too much to resist. i'm heading north on Victoria n. of the 101 and get a red. this unkempt looking, denim clad dude pulls up on his dresser two lanes over. i glance over, but he ignores me. the light turns and we both nail it. as i expected he pulls me hard, getting about half a truck length, but, to my surprise, when he gets to the first shift and has to start diddling around (or whatever Harley riders do) to shift, the L. motors on by and leaves him sucking exhaust. i back off at 60 due to traffic and he is miles behind. when i get to the next red he splits lanes and pulls up on my front fender (i hate it when bikers do that, if they don't launch hard you can't either, or you'll run over them). the light turns and its a repeat scenario. he pulls me till the first shift, and then its all over, bye bye hog. he followed me onto the 126, but by the time i hit the freeway he was so far behind he was just a speck in the mirror.
btw, anyone know what a 2000 SV650 will do in the 1/4? i can't find any performance data anywhere on one.

This is from SV650.com ( a Suzuki 650 V-Twin, 360lbs 68hp) sport bike and a "dresser" version.

I picked this up from the May 1999 Cycle World. The SV650 was used. I'm not sure if the SVS would be too much different.

1/4 mi. 11.85 sec. @ 110.17mph.

0-30 mph 1.34 sec.
0-60 mph 3.20 sec.
0-90 mph 6.79 sec.
0-100 mph 8.76 sec.

40-60 mph 3.27 sec.
60-80 mph 3.90 sec.

Measured top speed 128 mph

The faired S model should be slightly decreased acceleration and high top speed but it would depend on the conditions and circumstances in which the tests were performed

Thanks, BBQ. Quite a bit faster than I expected from 68 h.p. I was thinking mid 12s. Probably had one of those 98 lb. professional jockeys on it, though. It'd probably do mid 12s with my 200 lb. on it.

I don't see any faired "S" model on the Suzuki website, though. Isn't this purely a "Euro spec" model?

Alpha,
My little brother has a bright blue SV650 and absolutely loves it. One of the best value non-cruiser bikes on the market if you ask me.

My modified Harley FXLR would probably run slightly faster than my L in the 1/4. That Hog pilot you beat may have been riding one of the old "suicide" shift bikes. (Foot clutch with a hand shifter way down on the left side.) Way cool bike but not made for quick shifts, that's for sure.

MRBBQ,
How bad will your Valk beat your L?

Mike

Mike, my valk has a few mods and runs mid 12's. i can kill the L, out of the hole, even with the mods to the truck. it would take nitrous on the truck to even it up. if you look at the power/weight ratio, the heavy bike is still around 7 and the truck is close to twice that. i was surprised that the torque figures were low on the zuki at 44 compared to 68hp, more surprised that it would go 11's. the valks closer to 100hp/100ftlbs, and the HD's torque is way up there too.

F150SVT, I suspect you are exactly right about the suicide clutch. That hog seemed to have plenty of grunt out of the hole, but it sure was slow getting to a higher gear. And I dunno about an SV650, too many things that can beat it. Maybe I need to spring for a GSX1300R?

Alpha, I did exactly the same thing this weekend on PCH. I was with my wife (who always gets a little nervous when the Eaton starts whining). Two Hogs split the lanes to join me at pole position. Luckily for me, they positioned themselves in front of the car next to me (was it the side-exiting exhaust that encouraged them to move to the right, who knows?). Anyway, we all hopped on it and they never came close. I pulled and pulled until I heard them back off. I heard plenty of noise but there was simply no go from their end. Don't know what they had, but they looked like low-rider sports. I must say, it was mighty satisfying.

Its always fun racing Harleys and such. I raced one the other night. You never know... Especially when they don't have mufflers. I think they are either really quick, or really slow (for bikes).
