ZorPrime,

"You may be able to "hang" with a stock L,but not a modded one with the gears. It seems that many many Lightning owners are prone to super tuning their trucks.Just watch who you try and race, you never know what is "actually" under the hood."

Uh, which is why I am talking stock vs stock. Most Mustang owners also 'super tune' their cars. I will have gears installed next week and later this year I will have a Vortech in. Anyone care to race once the Vortech is in? lol

you arent talking stock if you are adding gears. With the gears you should be able to hang better with a BONE STOCK L.Maybe!Best i have ever seen out of a stock GT is 13.9...which is good, but quite frankly it aint good enough to hang with a stock lightning.Nice cars though.

Hey guys,

Everyone who's posted has had some great points here...and most of them are all correct, given the thought behind them.

Here's a little better description of what I've seen at my local track. I'm comparing what the vehicles run on the same night at the same track. East Coasters will always run faster than we will.

Stock '99-00 GT typically runs 14.0-14.2, stock '99 L runs 13.8-14.0. For arguments sake, lets assume a .2 difference in ET with the L being faster. Vehicles that run these types of ETs will normally be hitting the finish line right at 100mph. That is 146.6 feet per second. This means a margin of .2 seconds is 29.3 feet...or roughly 2 truck lengths over a FULL 1/4 mile run. This is also _assuming_ that both drivers left at the _exact_ same time.

If you believe two truck-lengths is a big time "kill" then you have yet to be "half-tracked" by a 10-second vehicle...but no matter what, the L is quicker down the 1/4 mile.

Both a late model Mustang and an L can be modded to run some very impressive times. Being familiar with both, I'd say the Mustang owner will spend more to get that car to run quicker than the L, but the L also has a significantly higher initial cost.
We could go round and round about the cost issue, so I'll let it die there.

Fact is, you run what you brung. No whiners if you lose (latest one I heard from a Honda owner was "But this is only a 4 cylinder"), no arrogant jerks if you win.

As for the GT getting a Vortech... That will be a great mod. As I'm sure you're well aware, it should put out ~350rwhp +/-. Just be prepared to get some rubber to make it hook. The GT should run 110-112mph through the traps, but might not even run 12s on REAL radials...whereas my L has run 13.20 on bone stock radials. On the street, a Vortech'd GT would crush a low-13 sec. L, but then again, a Vortech'd GT is probably not considered "mildly modified" as the original poster was referring to.

Go beat up on the GM crowd...and remember, there is _always_ someone faster.

Hey Wes;

Yup, I am looking for at least 350rwhp/350 rwtq once I strap the blower on. That is using the stock 8# pulley. I am sure I will get a little more then that since I will have a X pipe on as well - good for ~ 10-15hp.

Of course, all this power is no good if I can't put it on the ground! haha.

I have decided on what wheels I will be buying.

American Racing Torq Thrust II's.
Pirelli P7000 SuperSport tires.

17x9.5 up front w/ 275/40
17x11 out back w/ 315/35

That 11inch rim w/ 315's is going to leave a fat footprint. I will post some pics once I get them, sometime late this month/early next month.

Hey Matt,

Those wheels look awesome on the new GTs. I have the old American Racing XR LeMans wheels on my '96 Cobra...same size wheels and tires as you. The 315s hook much better than the narrow stock tires, but I still can't hit the nitrous (100shot) til 2nd gear.

Good luck with it.

My stang is close to truck. Is off .3-.4 in the 1/8th mile track. Was .7-.9 off before gears. Look at sig to see whats been done to car. Car gives my friends the feel of being faster do to noise and banging gears.

Hey fellows,

It seems as though you do not remember my encounter with a white 99 Cobra Saleen. Vortech called him up to ask if they could borrow his car for some testing. Anyhow, I thought I had him until about 45 (neck and neck), and somehow, he took off like a bat outta hell. By the time I hit 80, I think he was around 120. He was running 8 psi. And I guess thats where he finally got traction.

Later on, I saw his car on the net. It had a dyno graph, which was 400 rwt, 424 rwhp. Not sure what he runs in the quarter. This was in Las Vegas, around late march.

A few weeks earlier, I ran into a 99 GT. I am not scared of GTs, modded or not. It seemed as though this guy had lots of tuning to do in order to catch up to me.

94-95 5.0 GT: 215HP
96 4.6L GT: 220HP
97-98 4.6L GT: 225HP
97-98 Cobra 4.6L: 305HP
99-00 4.6L GT: 260HP
99 Cobra 4.6L: 320HP(never saw the 320HP)

The 94-98 GT's were dogs, and a stock L will beat it.
The 99-00 GT's however(5-speed), will run 14.1-13.8 stock. Considering the L has 100 more HP and more torque, gives it the advantage. Stock for stock the GT will give you a run.
