Newer Mustang GT's any problem?
I have quite a few individuals with 99-00 Mustang GT's driving around thinking they are soo fast. What do they usually run in the 1/4 stock and lightly modded? Should I not play with one? Just wondering, the little V6 mustangs are pretty arrogant as well, have to obliterate them sometime!

Even Mustang SVT Cobras should be little challenge.

All of the Mustang GT's around here I've seen won't break into the 13's. Most are low 14's. Talked to a guy at the strip who had a 99 GT. He had put a set of 3.73 gears in it and said his best was 13.99.

No problem whatsoever. Here in Phoenix, stock GT's, 5.0's or 4.6's typically run a flat 15 and are lucky to get in the high 14's. Stock Lightnings in Phoenix run about a 14.1. Cobra's here are in the low 14's. Go put them to shame, even w/o a chip and filter.

Thanks for all the replies. Some of these are all riced out. Big spoiler, stickers. Makes me want to laugh. They honestly think no one can beat them, this weekend I will show them what real power can do. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif :0

I guess its all in where you live...... My roommates 99 gt convert has ran 13.68@101 in excellent air(november),usally runs around 14.0@98-99 in the summer heat.(only mods are mufflers and a cold air kit) A couple weeks back at rockingham most of the 99-00 gt's were running in the low 14's. Anyways, stock for stock a lightning should take a newer gt.

I ran a new GT or Cobra the other day. The guy was just weaving in and out of traffic a ways behind me for about 3-4 miles we got to a clear section of road and he was comming on real fast. When he was about three car lengths back I nailed it. He got even with me stayed there and then I began to pull on him. One problem, we were coming up on a red light he had no place to go but stop, I had my lane, a lane to the right, or I could pass the two cars in front of him and then stop. I choose option three. Real funny. He pushed it to the last second, not real smart. Then we both make a left turn and he tries to keep up and can't , poor dirver and traffic. Eventualy he pulls up next to me as we are stoped. Revs up his motor and works on his 1/4 foot times. I don't know if I was suppose to be impressed or what. This went on about four or five times and I finaly rolled down my window and told him he didn't have enough POWER. He went nuts and launched into a tirade. This guy was a jerk and too stupid to race, he would hurt himself and possibly someone else too. These guys just think their mustangs are the fastest thing out there. They can't take the fact that some old guy in his truck is both faster and a better driver. You want to spank one of these little boys, no problem if they are stock. My L is stock and I could have taken this pinhead all day long. Have fun!

I love Stangs, and have owned three of them. They are no match for the Lightnings. I have badly beaten each of the last four generation GT's, including three races against a Cobra in different modes - each time he saw only my tail lights. I wish they were faster - I would like to own another one of them. My son owns a modded out, lowered, black 99, but has never raced it - I'd love to race him, but he is in Texas. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

Being quite familiar with late model Mustangs (yes, I do own the two listed in my sig file), I would say that you will be able to beat all of them stock for stock. The only ones that might come close would be a '96-98 Cobra driven _correctly_ and they would only be able to sneak up on you at the very end of a 1/4 mile race. I didn't say they'd win, but at the track I race at where stock L's typically run 13.8-14.0, a stock '96-98 Cobra will do the same. '99-00GTs in stock form will also run low-14s driven correctly. A '99 Cobra with the "fix" should also run high-13s with a competant driver.
What's fun about racing Mustangs, in particular, is that most of them are not stock. I'm not talking a pair of Flowmasters. To me, that's basically stock. A pair of Flows on a late model Mustang are dyno tested to give the owner a whopping ONE hp gain at the rear wheels. IOW, its a lot of noise is all. I'm talking about mods that actually took some thinking to plan out...even if to me its just basic hot-rodding. Lots of the F-body guys hot-rod their cars, too, but you never really know what's under the hood of an older 5.0 Mustang. I know that's not considered a "newer GT", though. Still, what's nice about these cars is that they are easy to modify and perform very well with minor mods. That's why I own "performance vehicles"... they are too fun to modify. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif ------------------ Wes Tarbox 90 LX 5.0 (10.69 @ 134.7)--597rwhp/590rwtq 96 Cobra (12.63 @ 114.5)--390rwhp/441rwtq 99 Lightning (13.20 @ 103.3)--362rwhp/444rwtq 00 Expedition XLT 5.4 http://members.aol.com/Wa2fst/index.html [This message has been edited by WA 2 FST (edited 08-03-2000).] |
The mustangs are not as fast as people think. My old Contour SVT keep up very nicely with them. My brother 96 mustang GT, and me with my 98'tour would race often, and he would beat me, atleast straight on drag style. Cornering, I had him beat...not by much though. (Maybe it was just how crazy I would be) Now that I have the lightning he will not come near me :-D But just imagine what a SC would do for those cars.

96 and 97 GT's were down on power a little. My 4.6L F150 would just about keep up with my wifes 96 GT convertible. Her 97 cobra on the other hand was a different animal. I was able to get a 13.9 with just a K&N with it. (I do live on the east coast though)

I'll have to agree with "WA 2 FST" when he says stock for stock the L's are formidable.
However, being a 96 cobra owner, and a soon to be Lightning owner too, I have to say this; Lets not let our ego's do the thinking here. If you run into a Vortech suplied 96 cobra then you will not be the one pushing the air. The Lighnings are quick out of the hole where the cobras have a bog problem, but after that it's bye bye. Remember that without your supercharger you're nothing but an F-150 that weighs 4700 pounds. I'm not slamming Lightnings because I will have one myself soon, but lets be realistic and know your limits. And seriously guys, a blown cobra is out of your league. |
I own a 2000 GT. Current mods are K&N and Flowmasters. Right now I can keep up with the new Lightings... they start to pull, but not by a car lenght or anything like that. You guys weigh a lot more.
If you have the same drive in the GT and Lighting, the Lighting would win...but not by much... it wouldn't be a "kill". I have 3.73 gears on the way, and once those are in I should be able to hang with an L no problem. On the freeway I always bust loose from an L just by dropping into 3rd and hitting the floor. Not dissing you L guys at all, they are awesome trucks and plan to buy one in a year or so. -Matt |
seattlesnake,
Ive seen a s/c'd cobra at the track, he was running 13.0's,he may have done better with slicks.I dont really think that they are out of my league. Matt'ooGT, You may be able to "hang" with a stock L,but not a modded one with the gears. It seems that many many Lightning owners are prone to super tuning their trucks.Just watch who you try and race, you never know what is "actually" under the hood. Be cool Guys! |
