Thumbs up Just bought a Black 2000 Lightning!

Well, I just bought a Black 2000 Lightning the other day and I have a few questions about them:

1)How many miles should I put on it before I start racing it?

2)The dealer was trying to sell me paint sealer for $300 and I am not sure if I should get it or not. I plan on using Zaino and was not sure if the clay bar would remove it. Should I get it?

3)What is the fastest anyone has been able to get their L to go on radials?

Thanks, Jeff

First off, congratulations! Even though Red is faster...

You'll get different opinions as far as break in time. I say 2000(first oil change) but Wyldman(Chuck) I think was quoted as saying "Drive it like you stole it from day one". Chuck, I appologize if not an exact quote.

Tell them to bite you on the paint sealant. Go with the Zaino. You're on the right track.. IMO

Don't know what everyone else's top speed is, but personally, 130 mph. Don't tell the wife...

Good luck and welcome aboard...

Hey Incon,

Congrats on the purchase! Great truck, huh?

As far as long term "break-in" periods...I personally don't think its that necessary. I'd say 500 miles or so. The rings on these new motors seat almost immediately after initial start up. I changed the oil in mine at ~200 miles, and then at 1000. From there on, I didn't worry about holding back at all.

I'd forget the "paint sealant" or whatever they're trying to sell you. If you're as **** about caring for the vehicle as most of us on this board, it won't matter.

As far as times on stock radials...you'll be surprised at how well the thing hooks if the track is prepped decently at all. I have managed a 13.203 on stock F1s with just a chip and air filter/inlet tube kit.

Jeff

Put 500 + miles on before going to WOT

I have been a finance manager and paint sealer is great profit to a dealership (they pay about $35.00 for it) and worthless to an owner. Zaino the exterior and Scotchguard the interior and save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

FORDSALES,
Can I expect to buy Zaino locally at the neares autoshop or just use their web page. I am a bit restless, so if you know of a particular chain around, please tell me.
Thanks!

Incon306 - I didn't start pushing mine hard until I had 2K on the clock. Another thing I always felt was a good idea was to go easy on the brakes for the first couple hundred miles. As for top speed - 120+ going over the Skyway bridge, on the uphill side.

By the way, Welcome to the family

TBL - I had to slow down near the top when I caught up with the other traffic. Plus I didn't want to go flying over the crest of the bridge, you never know what might be on the other side.

I have had the opportunity of owning a 99 first then a 2000.Both I have reached 13.2 with a chip/downs ford intake filter set up.I have also reached 140mph in both.My 99 did get there a tad quicker but thats a whole different story.Stock they are probally good for 145 or so with enough room. The good thing is they get to 140 within a mile!Enjoy and first things first, get a chip/filter combo!!

Thumbs up

Congrats on the truck and on choosing the fastest color! As far as top speed, I've hit 138 on a back road around here. The L had more to give, but the road didn't. Had to shut down for a curve.

Thanks for replies everyone. I plan on doing the chip and filter mod. I won't bother asking what chip I should use. However, does it matter what air filter/intake system I go with or do they all work equally as well?

Congrats on the new truck! I'm in San Jose, too. What dealership did you buy your truck from? Can I ask how much you paid?

Were they asking 5000 over MSRP originally? Did it take much haggling to get MSRP?

Did yours come with the factory tonneau cover?
