If the SS will compete directly with the Lightning, push such a heavy truck to 13 second E.T.'s and be natural, that's gotta' be some monster *** motor that they're gonna use. If these predictions come to pass and turn out to be valid, which I really doubt, then all it would take for the SS to become king is an aftermarket blower. Gotta' love all the performance stuff in the pipe for any brand. It just makes our battles a lot more fun. :00

I don't know if they can pull it off with the EPA, but all they would have to do is put the new 502 Ram Jet ( http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=120&pid=693 ) in a shortbed Silverado 1500 and watch out . Don't underestimate the competiion until you know what they have got.

According to the motor trend article, the truck is in the pipeline. Is that sorta like the "check is in the mail?"

Well,I for one love Chevy trucks. They are very comfortable and have lots of power and hold their value alot better than fords.I would much rather own a silverado ls than a xlt f150.The Lightning however is a totally different monster.

If Chevy decides to build the SS ther are a few issues.

1.They will not use aftermarket wheels like they have shown

2.it will be really tough to compete with the lightnings handling

3.traction will be impossible

4.It is not going to run 13.2s with a chip!!

It will probally run high 13.s and until you (BLOW) it,it will not get much faster with as little cost as the lightning. It is probally gonna be pretty well tweaked to run those times,I know 400 hp trucks that run low 14s.Lightnings are a freak truck as we all know.beating a lightning is easier said then done

5.Put a blower and slicks and watch out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some interesting reading further in, on the SVT Merc Marauder. seems the blown 4.6 doesn't have the torque they are looking for, and the blown 5.4 won't fit underhood. hope they get it strait (soon)

I don't doubt Chevy can make an engine with more horsepower than the supercharged 5.4. They will definately have to use a bigger motor.

I think they will find the right now massive torque of the supercharged 5.4 some what difficult to match with a naturally aspirated engine.

It will be interesting to see what their answer is and what Fords response might be if their answer is a really good one.

I vote for a supercharged v10 in the L. That should settle it.

My guess would be that Chevy would use the stepside truck and IMHO, that is one ugly truck. This coming from a GM fan thru and thru.

Ford really, and I mean really hit the nail on the head when they designed the F150 Flareside. It is an awesome looking truck. You could put 600 hp and 600 ft lbs in a Chevy stepside and I won't buy it. Period.

A BBBBBig BBBBlock I don't think EPA is going to like this. Big Brother is watching!!
That why Ford used a smaller block and a blower. And once Chevy takes the limiter off the truck us L owners will have some honest and hard running to keep ahead. Long Live the K... Lightning!!!!

Everybody has engines (especially big blocks) that will do the trick, but putting one in a production viheicle is something else. The last time chevy tried to use a big block was the SS454 which couldn't even outrun the 250 hp gen 1 L. I think ford has done about as much as can be done with the CIs they are working with. The 4.6 is maxed out and not a good engine anyway. Ford has evidently bitten the bullet and redesigned the mustang forward of the firewall for the 5.4 at least in the cobra R. They need to do the same thing to the Crown Vic/Mercury chassie so they can use the 5.4 also.

Maybe chevy could sell the silverrado without an engine. It would be great for their CAFE averages and then put a 502 big block in the crate in the back of the truck. Sell it as a do-it-yourselfer!

It's really too bad we can't manage to elect Congressmen/women and Senators who have a clear understanding of how badly our CAFE laws have messed up the US automotive market, especially for US producers.

They haven't the courage to tax gasoline as it probably should be based on international norms and force our producers to make cars that offer high mileage but that not enough people want to buy. As most of you know, our gasoline prices are from a fourth to a third of any other advanced country. Those countries must make fuel efficient/good cars to sell any at all. And for the most part, they do. Our fuel efficient cars by and large are not very competitive with European or Asian (read Japanese) econoboxes. I exclude from this group the Yugo and some of the not so good Korean cars.

The other side effect of this body of law is they cannot make cars/trucks that we as enthusiasts would fall all over ourselves to buy. They do occasionally get made, of course, as witness the Lightning, but they can only make X number per year or run into CAFE problems. That drives up the cost for us. Remember the Muscle cars of the late sixties which could be purchased very reasonably as compared to a well equipped middle horsepower model of the same vehicle.

I may be way in the minority, but I would pay a fair amount more for gas and maybe drive a bit less if I could get what I wanted in a performance vehicle. I love my Moby greatly, but would have liked to be able to have purchased the same performance in maybe a 2 door or 4 door rear wheel drive passenger car in addition to or even instead of a truck. Or, as a Supercab!!! And yes, I realize you can buy a Camaro/Firebird or even a Stang that have as much or more performance, but they are almost as impractical for me as Moby is in the sense of cabin space.

I guess I will just have to restore my '69 BelAir 427/390 with TH400 and bench seat through my old age, not to mention the trunk space on that old elephant.

To return to the topic, I hope Chevrolet does do a real Silverado SS as it is boring as heck to not have any truck oriented competition on the road or on the track.
Bill
