Unhappy Gas Gauge Problem

Still no MAJOR problems to report and my favorite thing is the world is still being with my truck, but these little things are starting frustrate me.

Is anybody else having trouble with inaccuracy or just plain lack of registration from their gas gauge. I did a search but didn't see anything. I have yet to run out of gas but it is only a matter of time. Sometimes it doesn't even register and sometimes it does but it's wrong, it will say full and than all of a sudden drop to 1/8 of a tank. It is working correctly about 50% of the time now.

Also, my passenger window is making trippy noises. It thumps when I roll it up, it's fine going down though.

Better call the dealer while I still can.

Hopefully you will find the puzzling answer to this question. The gas gage in my wife's Mountaineer does exactly the same thing and she complains about it all the time. I need to get it fixed before the warranty runs out.

I still don't have a Lightning (but don't kick me off 'cause of that!), but the gas guage in my CLK is screwy too. The dealer blames it on the oxygenated fuels here in California. I don't know if that could be the cause, but in my car, the fuel guage either reads empty or full for about 3 days after I fuel up. Then, at about 3/4-1/2 tank, it starts working again. I could get it replaced, but it's too much trouble at the moment. I would tell you to try not to run out of gas, but you should know your 'baby' well enough that you can tell how much gas she's using.

I have seen wierdness only when leaving the truck runnning when I fuel it. For some reason it wont register additional fuel unless it is off. Other than when fueling , I havent seen it jump around like you describe though...Let us know what you find

Cool

CA,

An intermittent gauge usually implies a poor ground. Either the gauge panel ground or the fuel sender ground needs to be checked.

Your window needs a new regulator. A very common problem on L's and other 150's

Mine is currently waiting for the part (regulator) to come in.

I'll let y'all know what happens. ADP Thanks I appreciate it.

On a side note...the dealership is STILL calling me to pick up the *part that broke* on my seat when I couldn't get it to lock upright. Even though I stood right there and fixed in myself with a half a dozen tech standing there. I managed to fix it after reading information here. Sure glad I have y'all

And Happy Fathers Day to all the Daddys on the board too.

Hey CA,

Do you have the cowl screw covers? That could be your problem.

The manual on my 97 Expedition said not to fuel up with the key on, or the guage would be inaccurate! Hope this helps!

My gauge has done that more than once also. The first time it happened, I pulled off the expressway to get $10.00 worth, started the truck and headed to the entrance ramp. As I got on the ramp I noticed NO CHANGE on my gauge, I pulled to the side and stopped and looked at the gauge, all the while thinking I had gotten burned. I was about to go back to the gas station and ask what the hell was going on, but the gauge moved about a 1/16 of an inch and the low fuel light went off. After a half hour of driving it finally seemed like it was showing the right amount. It still does it time to time, and I am going to bring it up next service date.

Why rely on the gauge anyway ? I never do. How many others do ? I always reset my trip odometer, and unless I develope a leak in my fuel system, I know when I have to fill up regardless of what the gauge says. If you do this you will eventually get a feal for how much distance you can go on a tank(factoring in driving habits as required ). For me If I have 400km on my tank and it's all been city driving I know it's time to fill up. If it's been all highway and I have 600km, then I'm pretty much on fumes This is a good habit to get into because if your gauge is working perfectly and it breaks and/or sticks at some point in time you will always be able to tell by checking against the trip odometer. I find the gause pretty linear and I get about 100km per 1/4 tank.

Sounds like a ground problem but keep at the Dealership till they fix it. Till then in my L I get about 200 miles to a tank so just fill up and set your trip back to 0 and when you get to 200 miles go fuel.

HEY CA,

THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH EUROPEAN CARS. WHAT IT PROBABLY IS THE ELECTRONIV/MANUAL PICK /SENSOR INSIDE THE FUEL TANK AS FUEL GOES IN THE THE SENSOR THE SENSOR GETS STUCK IN A POSITION UNTIL IT COMES LOOSE AGAIN. OR IT COULD BE THE GUAGE SHORTING OUT. (SENDING UNIT) ANYWAYS, THIS IS NOTHING THE DEALER CANT FIX, SO NOT TA WORRY.
HOPE THIS GIVES AN IDEA AS TO WHERE THEY COULD START.

Have you ever hit any gravel patches or gone trouhgh road construction? Know we all try to miss those, but sometimes have to go through them.
My stang had that type of problem with the gas guage after I went over a gravel patch. A stone nailed the sensor wire and frayed it. Couldn't tell by looking at it, cause the covering was in tact. But seemed I'd hit a bump the one time and the guage would go wacky, hit another bump and would go back to normal.
Felt pretty bad when I went back to the guys that had just installed my MSD DIS4 and reamed them out for screwing my wiring up, and it ended up just being a frayed wire.
