Question LIGHTNING Radio Reception

I have a question. I have a problem with my radio in my 2000 Lightning. It fades in and out and static. Has any one had this problem? I checked the antenna connection. The stereo light on the radio stays lit. I wonder if it is the receiver? Comments suggested.

Question

I have the same problem. It just started a few weeks ago. Maybe one of the audiofiles (spelling?) on the board can help us.

I have the same problem also, noticed when I would remove my chip it clears up. I have had this problem with both PSP and Superchips. Hope this helps you figure it out, does seem strange but that's o.k.

You guys might want to purchase an antenna signal booster. It goes inline between your antenna and head unit. Definetly clears up any signal problems...

If the stereo light is on and is steady then you should have plenty of signal strength. The light is turned on by a 19KHz tone imbedded in the FM signal being broadcast by the station, so obviously the radio is seeing the station if it is turning this light on.

It sounds more like interference. Have you recently added any electrical devices to your truck? Or have you "messed" with any of the wiring?

I got the same problem only after the chip. Without the chip it is fine. Mabey the chip people can tell us what is causing it.

Interesting...... since some of you are removing your chip and all is OK could this mean that the Chips are causing RFI(radio frequency interference).

I guess this means the chips are not certified by the FCC.

Me.... I'm not having any problems, yet.

One thing to check is the antenna mount at the fender. Many carwashes unscrew and reattach the antenna after the wash. Water, corrosion, or a loose connection could be the problem. They make a conductive grease that you can put on the connection. You can probably get it at Radio Shack.

I have tried the signial booster, Checked the contacts, Grounds, Mounting. I even have a attenna signal measure from Radio shack. I believe it is ine the receiver. Someone should call SuperChips and ask if the chip gives out a backfeed to the elec. System. Through the ecm. i'll pull the chip out tonight and see if that clears it out. I heard from a friend of mine that ford has a TSB out on Radio Reception and noise in systems from the alt under boost?>

Alternator noise usually sounds like a whine that changes pitch as engine rpm changes.

If the Chip is "talking" to the radio it might help to wrap the chip in a double layer of aluminum foil. Make sure the foil is well grounded and does not touch any electrical connections. It would be best if you did it with the chip already installed.

The IF strip in an FM radio is at 10.7MHz, anyone know the clock frequency of the computer/chip? Sounds like it is close, or close to a harmonic.

I turned my key to the accessory position and the interference went away turned the key to the run side and interference came back. The chip must be causing the problem. The chip may need to be shielded to prevent interference.

Good/Interesting thread:

The stock radio system is not really all that great to begin with, sad to say, but having run two different chips, they seem
to make it worse. Not real bad, just annoying sort of staticy type stuff.

So far, no problems with the CD player, anyone have problems in that area??

Bill

You are hearing the Addressing of your external chips mods. This is very common and you should be able clear it up with good Shielding Tape. The good stuff cost about 70 bucks a roll but you can do a lot of shielding jobs with a roll. If somebody is around the San Diego aera thay can stop by my home and we'll see if the shielding tape will cure your problem. I Shield all the time when installing cilivian Satellite terminals on large Navy vessels.

Dave what should we use the shielding tape on, the antenna wire or computer? I tried 6 layers of metal tape on the computer and that didn't work. When I moved the computer to the engine compartment that worked so it is from being close to the antenna wire.
