Post 2000L program code update!!!

Took the L into the dealer this morning with all the info from the previous thread. Told the service tech that I wanted him to check the octane setting and mess with the timing so it would perform better. Without touching the truck he tells me the octane is set for regular (87 octane). I ask, "How do you know?". His reply is all the computers are set at the factory this way for detonation and compression. So he changed to premium gas setting and advanced the timing. He said if I didn't like it or had any problems to bring it back in and he would reset it to what I want. As for performance, hard to tell by the seat-o-the-pants meter. Feels like better acceleration from a slow roll (10-15 mph). Gonna need some more seat time to tell for sure.

Hmm i just bought mine at Royal Oak ford last week. Wonder if i should take mine in or better yet take it to the dealer that did yours and have them do mine? Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Your dealer can probably do it. Just tell the write up person that you want to talk to the service tech. Print off the info from the other post and highlight what you want. That's what I did.

Just got back in from test run. My son, (180lbs.) me (250lbs.) and a full tank of gas. My son says it definately pulls harder and also got a chirp of the tires on 1-2 gear shift. 1st time that ever happened. For no charge at the dealer I'm happy for now.

I just did my first couple of G-Tech Pro measurements today.
Interestingly, I ran one before going to the dealership and three after the visit.

My times: Before - 14.18 @ 103.3 mph
After - 14.13 @ 103.4 mph (best)

What did I go to see the dealer for? Well....first to get the stereo head unit changed to a AM/FM w/ CD and controls. Second for its first oil change on the new engine (put in Red Line) with approx 1900 miles on it.

And third (drum roll please) - to have the tech see if the computer parameters could be changed. He swore up and down that the computer would be set for premium. Lo and behold, for the variable input for fuel, it was set at regular. Duh..... Changed it to premium, but as you can see by the times, it didn't seem to change much. He was hesitant to get into the other parameters however.

Very curious about the timimg advance you talked about 2000Blackbolt.

I am getting big wheel spin at the line however. My launch is to just hammer to the floor. Spins for about 15 feet. Big piles of rubber dust at the start. Caution, you can't neccessarily hear the spin taking place.

Please e-mail me at tim.wood3@sympatico.ca

Question

Hey, does this only apply to 00 Lightnings?

2nd question:
Did it cost you guys anything to have them check it out? The people I seem to come across always act like they are too busy to deal with a college kid. I think I will try and find out.

Sal? Have you noticed this in the program while researching a more agressive code? Thanks in advance.

Question

2000Blackbolt - are you using a chip and if so was this change made with the chip installed? I've got a chip and am wondering if it should be in or out when they take a look at this? I could be wrong but something tells me that this is might be one of the areas that the chip goes after in order to get the gains that they do. Also, on the timing advance, any idea what he set it to?

Hwy_2_L: No, I don't have a chip. Still waiting patiently for a PSP filter. As for chip in or out before they look at it, ask Mike Troyer or whoever you got the chip from. I would think since you have a chip you would not get any gain from taking it in to the dealer. This is just a guess, I was considering buying a chip but wanted to try this out first. I am upset that I was pumping in premium fuel and getting regular results. Why hasn't one of our techs onboard here let us onto this sooner? Maybe they didn't know. The tech at the dealer told me he could retard or advance the timing a few degrees. I was also wondering if you have to drive with this new parameter for a while before you notice a significant difference or would it take immediate effect.

Exclamation

Called three SVT dealers in this town, and the Service techs at all 3 dealers told me that you guys are on crack cocaine, and that no such setting exists. How do I deal with my friendly neighborhood dealers, if they wont even acknowlege that the friggin option exists? I HATE Ford dealers/service departments in Denver. They have no clue whatsoever about the products they sell and service. The people I talk to never even know what a Lightning is...and this is in DENVER...not a small little town.

I don't own a Lightning but I read these threads all the time. My question is, why hasn't Sal ever mentioned these adjustable computer settings? Isn't he a factory tech? Maybe he doesn't want you L owners to know so he can sell you one of his chips. Just speculation. Now FLAME AWAY.

Tundra: They didn't charge me a penny. Billed it as warranty work I guess. I didn't check the invoice real close but it said something about PCM retest code and PCM reprogramming. I believe the service tech did what I asked. He understood me completely as to what I wanted. I told him I wished I could do this in my driveway and he said the machine to do this costs him $1500. Maybe if we get enough guys together we can afford it.lol
