got a race with a 99 c5 convertible...need some pointers please
Hey guys and gals ,
got a race lined up with my friends 99c5 convert. Question is has anyone run a c5 yet? I ran a 92 vette the other day from a light and I edged in front at the end of every gear. From a roll I beat him by about 2 cars to 120mph. Now what are my chances with my buddies c5. Its a stick and I have been hyping him up for the last 3 weeks. Trying to get him to spin the tires..heheheh then I know he wont catch me ... any advice would help... my truck is stock with 1500 miles.Took it to the track (palmdale california..and ran a best of 14.45@94mph. the rest were 14.5's. these runs are at about 7500ft elevation.
thanks,
seb

If your running mid 14s, you better get a chip and filter quick!!.A stock 13 second lightning can stay with a vette for about 800 ft.A chip and filtered Lightning can actually beat one by a decent margin all the way down the 1/4 mile. All you have to do is practice using a 10mm socket.this way your computer will come out quickly for a chip.Really all you can do is practice take off.If your truck is a 14 second one,It should not be that bad.I beat a 2000 vette by a .10 last time I was at the track 13.2 to his 13.3
I have a question for Lightningquick or anyone else. Everytime I have put a filter kit on my 99 Lightning it has gone slower. I have tried unhooking the battery and turning on the lights. I dont think its working to drain the residual charge. My stereo loses the time but retains the preset stations so I assume I am not losing the whole charge so the computer will reset. This is very frustrating. Any comments would be appreciated.
Those times are fine for a stock truck at 7500'. Easy high-13s if you were to race out where the East-coasters run. I seriously doubt the c5 convertible would break into the 13s at 7500' above sea level.
If he does spin the tires, then he will have a very hard time catching you up to ~105-110mph. You know this already. So my advice would be to make SURE you get a good launch. If you race him from a 15-20mph punch, then he will probably start pulling away by ~75 or so.
If you are able to get a chip and filter, then your truck will break into the 13s even at that track up in the "mountains".

I cant imagine your truck going slower.I cant imagine it going much quicker either.I feel it does give you more boost.I can see it on my gauge. It probally isnt great by itself,It does work great ith the chip. The air intake gives you a little more boost while the chip brings the boost on alot quicker. All i can say is get a good launch.DONT try to manual shift it.It wont work when you are that nervous. You will bump the rev limiter for sure.
the convertable is the heaviest and slowest of the c5's, so if you are going to pick on corvettes, that would be the one
my friend leases a new one every couple of years, never mods them at all. they are plenty fast stock! i've kind of made it my lifes work to beat him in my 6000lb dodge truck, now my lightning, and whatever else comes along, because it's a no-win situation for him

Information I copied from one of my previous posts. This was against a C-5 hardtop on 3/31 at Ennis. I saw the guy post a 13.4 later that night. Good luck!
Needless to say the Vette had problems at the start. I jumped him and he couldn't recover in time. I was without my chip so I figured I was in big trouble lining up against this guy. Following is information from the run.
Lightning ---------- Vette
.619 (3)----------- .803
2.154 (2) ---------- 2.746
6.015 (3) ---------- 6.609
9.169 (3) -----------9.611
77.61 mph (4) ------ 83.089 mph
11.91 (3) ---------- 12.175
14.210 (3) --------- 14.320
99.87 (4) ---------- 105.33
Parenthesis indicates ranking out of four total runs. High humidity and not a lot of grip. I'm not real proud of these numbers, but it just goes to show you if the other guy messes up at the start, it can be very hard for him to overhaul a Lightning before the finish line. Also interesting to note the Vette was 5.479 mph faster at the 1/8 marker and only 5.46 mph faster at the 1/4.

So did you take him N2O? I've got a pesky C5 neighbor waiting to race me and I've not even had my lightning for 48 hours!!!
Other than giving the magnificent beast a decent break-in period, should I wait for a chip/filter/nitrous or go at him stock. Losing will not be acceptable.
By the way, it has been 48 hours of s**t-a** grining - even while sleeping.

What happens if the C5 isn't stock??? My C5 isn't stock and its faster then my stock 2000 L hand down! Its in the high 12's using a g-tech but its a 6-speed and starting from a stand still is hard not lighting up the tires. My older Vette (sold) was a 90 coupe Z51 with a 8 pound boost Paxton Supper Charger and that was way quicker then my present Vette. But I'm having so much fun with my Lightning the Vette just sits(for Now).

Hey Big1Daddy,
Take your friend to Sears and buy a new washer/dryer set (make sure he drives the vette). Tell him to take the dryer home, and you, the washer. First one back wins the race.

The C5 is stock. It is an automatic so he won't smoke the tires. I know it is stock cause I wrench his motorcycles and jetskis since he is mechanically challenged. The C5 is dealer maintained and STOCK. Now if he just let me re-time the ignition on that bow-tie...
The washer/dryer is a great idea. I've already mentioned to him that "to give the kids something to remember" that we each take our oldest kid with us.
C5 dry=3282....w/he&kid=3742
Lightning dry=4696....w/me&kid=5126
Of course I'll recommend a full tank of gas for him (120lbs). But how do I convince him to load up a full Craftsman Rollaway with metric/US???

Big1Daddy- The Stock C5 automatics don't lay rubber, just take off. If you don't want a Chip/Filter before, maybe check out this 87 Octane setting your Computer has in its program. If you read the other posts, have your Dealer reset it to 90 or 91 Octane setting in your Lightning. I raced a 99 C5 from a grade going up a hill. We took off at the light and I was Side by Side and had to slow down because my lane was going from 2 to 1. The C5 thought he was going to blow me away but it was a draw. Now the truck was only a day old and not broke-in, and if I had a Chip/Filter I could have pulled him.(Maybe?)

I would never endanger the life of someone while racing.Especially my own kid regardless of age. This is why you both should fly solo.If you kill yourself .....oh well.If you killed your kid.......You could never live with yourself.Find a place where there is no other cars on the road too!
Racing on the street is not what you would like to teach your son.Teach him to keep it at the drags. If you dont he will think it is alright to street race when we all know it may be fun but extremely dangerous,Especially to innocent bystanders and other people on the road!

Thanks Red, I agree that the zero to less than 60 is fair game. Car and driver testing lists the time for zero to XX as
MPH Lightning C5(manual)
30 2.2 2.1
40 3.1 2.8
50 4.3 3.8
60 5.8 4.9
So assuming (likely) they had drivers who knew how to launch a manual vette, the automatic will be no slower than 5.3-5.4 to sixty. Filter and chip would probably bank it in my favor (without risking my bloodlines).
And sorry blue blood and pacecar if my previous post was strong. But I work real hard to raise RESPONSIBLE boys into men and may take my work seriously
