Post 2000L Superchip is in! Next....

I put in a Superchip last night on my 00'L. I ordered it last Thursday from Mike Troyer. He shipped it that day (great service). I got it Tuesday, put it in that night. My first mistake was trying to clean the contacts in a dull lit room. I put it in, started it up, and ran it. Loved the improvements. This morning, I got in the truck to go to work, and it wouldn't start. I called Mike Troyer, got him on the phone, where he is always available, he told me to unplug the chip to see if the contactors were not clean, and it started right up. I took the computer out, and in the bright sunlight, I re-scraped the contactors with a eye-glass screw driver, and got the remaining goo off the contactors. Re-installed and it started right up, and has been perfect ever since. Lesson learned:
Mike is a great guy to buy a chip from. He gives great service and back-up. I can't even imagine what I would have gone through with the other guys chip (especially after reading Floyd91's post the other day). Mike explained to me over the phone about how the chip should be secured with tape on both ends, and how the clip fits back just below the chip, with no forcing it into position. I heard where a couple guys broke their clips trying to force them into place. Next lesson, for those who do not have a Lightning chip, get one now! This chip makes the truck shift like a European sports car instead of a truck. Smooth and quick. The power is much better off the bottom and in the midrange, where you drive most of the time. I cannot believe how much more fun this truck is to drive now! I put on an Airaid filter kit first, but I did not feel any difference, other than the boost gauge went to 10 instead of 8. Now that I have the chip, I am glad I have the Airaid. The filter kit lets it breath at high rpm, and when you punch it.
Without the chip, when you punch it, the transmission does a double delay, and shifts early once your are accelerating.
I am very happy with this combo, and as Lighningquick said, it is the best thing for the money out there. If I feel the need for more acceleration, I will look toward a high stall converter with a shift kit. To me, that is the only other option available that could possibly give the Lightning a serious reduction in 1/4 mile performance. I think the exhaust system is fine for a stock engine (stock cam/heads/no-nitrous). A louder muffler, or a cut-out might be fun, but at the same time, too much noise might be annoying, due to the fact that the muffler sits right under the passenger seat, which resonates the cab. Some of you guys have done some great cosmetic mods to your trucks, and I would like to look into the headlight covers, and also find some black powdercoated billet grills. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed.

Hey BACK2FORD, it sounds like you are happy!!! I agree with the exhaust portion, but what about a good set of headers, like JBA's. Wouldnt they compliment your intake and chip?

PDLightning- I have not had the best of luck with headers, and I don't think that they are a real good bang for your buck; although I do feel that the JBA's (shorty's) are the best bet here in Calif. as they utilize the stock cats and O2 sensors and I think they are carb certified. I have long tube headers with high flow cats and a cat back system on my car, and frankly for the money I spent, I could have made a lot more power elsewhere, and not
had to mess with O2 simulators and SES codes being set off.

That was a Superchip, not "the other guys".

Hey Paul,

When the "newness" has worn off on the chip (and I agree with all you said about it...it did the same thing for my '99), you should seriously consider installing a simple shift kit. I would try that before spending the time/$$ on a converter, unless you're racing your truck on slicks and trying to get every last bit of ET out of it (like some have done very successfully on this board!).

If you like the way it shifts now (and I know its a vast improvement over stock) you will like it with the shift kit even better. I used the TransGo shift kit. For ~$100, it was money well spent.

Glad you are enjoying your truck. Best of luck.

4Dthunder- Floyd bought a used Superchip for his 99 from someone on the board, and installed it incorrectly. If he had bought a new one from Mike T. he would have been able to call him and talk to him. In fact, he would probably have had a good set of installation instructions, as well as Mike's personal coaching to install it correctly. What I meant is: that with your buddy, you can't get him on the phone or by e-mail at any time if you have a problem.
I am really thankful for the information we all get from this message board, and I am glad that some of the aftermarket suppliers, like Mike T. help to financially support this bulletin board.

Exclamation

I am well aware of Floyd's experience, it was my chip that probably got cooked. He said he followed the instructions and I believe him as he seems like an honest guy caught in a bad situation. And who said he didn't try to call Troyer for help? Keep in mind Troyer didn't make any money off of this sale. Things aren't always as they would seem to be.
