To all with streight pipes
Today I had a muffler shop in stall streight pipes from cats back and two 3in chrome tips. It cost $200 which was more than I wanted to spend but did it anyway. My truck had a Borla 2 in 2 out muffler that was on the truck when I bought it, but it was for a Corvette and was installed very sloppy. The welds were "mud dobbed" and it had two screw on chrome tips, puke! The streight pipe set up was done very nice and looks great. O.K. now for the sound, WOW! It sounds almost like glass packs with echo tips, very loud. To my suprise there is not much drone inside the cab at normal speeds, just slightly more than the Borla. But when you lay into it she really screams, cant even here my supercharger. As a matter of fact I had a run in with a F-body about an hour after install. 60mph and out he slowly pulled till about 138mph but then my truck hit a dead spot and just stopped. Oh no, I forgot to shift into overdrive, 3rd gear at 140mph!!! I must have hit the 6500rpm rev limiter, I felt very stupid and am glad I didnt blow my motor. Does explain why he kept slowly pulling. With the loud pipes I couldnt here my motor and was too busy watching the road and him so ooops. I do seem to notice some low end torque loss, actually alot of loss. I know a couple of other guys on this board are running without a muffler and was curious to see how much it hurt performance. Any dyno numbers? or time slips? Please post response if possible. I guess when I go to the track I'll find out how much it hurt or helped me. Later!
Caka,
glad to hear from someone else with straights. i don't have the same truck as you, but my exhaust is the same set-up. i have a 99 SC 4X4, my first try with the straights was to build a Y pipe off my single, and used dual 2 1/2" pipes out the back. big torque loss. went back and talked with the guy that built it for me, talked him into coming off the Y pipe with 2 1/4" pipes. a huge difference was made by doing this. my truck pulls as good as before and sounds a lot better. i did notice some extra pulling when passing, too. just something you might want to check. good luck with your truck, Rich.

I bought a fabricated x pipe from cobrarose once he decided it was too loud for towing. It bolt's in place of the stock muffler and keeps the stock tips. He was into it for $75.00 and passed it on for that. I am very happy with the sound but I do see where it could get too loud at 75 towing something. I didn't really notice a loss of low end (still smokes through 1st with no chip yet), but I did see a small increase up top. With this set-up I have out run a 99 cobra with the fix and also a new SS Z28, so I know I didn't hurt the beast. I would like to know what it did to the truck on paper, but what gets to the road is what counts I guess.
