Noisy cats

Hi, all!

After a good run on the Autobahn today (WOT for about 1/4 mile, then about 80 for another 3 miles), I noticed - when i got off the road and stopped at a light - that the cats (or something in that area) sounded like rocks rattling around in a tin can...first thing I thought of was detonation, but the same noise was still being made to a MUCH lesser degree after I parked the truck and shut it off. They have never been this noisy before, so the question of the day is this - are my cats degrading? Should I look into replacing them (as an excuse for new 2 cat midpipes... )? The truck is a '02 with 28K on the odometer.

Thanks for the responses!

Could just be the heat shield(s). Head under there and take a peek while the truck's cold. Tap on those shields and see...

Otherwise, get a new midpipe Just a good enough excuse!

Maybe they broke...or melted. If they are rattling around in there enough you may see debris laying on the ground by the tailpipe.

Had this happen to a set of aftermarket cats a couple years ago.

Loose Heat Shields

I agree with MaxPower. The heat shields on my Bassani mid pipes were rattling like marbles in a tin can. I went to Home Depot and got the biggest hose clamps I could find and put them around the Cats. Tightened up and all is quiet.

So....the heat shields work loose, and may need adjustment (tightening)? I don't think it's the interior of the cats - I had that issue on a different car I owned, and it's not making the same sound. It almost sounds like the usual noise that they make when they start cooling off, but it is MUCH louder sound....I will check the heat shields tomorrow.

Thanks!

Steve

After extended runs, your cats will make loud popping noises. Is this what you're talking about?

Yes...but the popping noises have gotten a lot louder than they used to be. I know that this is normal to an extent, but the noise level and duration of the popping has made me wonder if there's not something else going on.

Had the same problem...took it to the local dealer and they wanted 1200 to replace the exhaust. That was a big hell no! I could buy brand new Bassani or Borla for $1200...why do I want that ****ty Ford OEM part. Anyways, to make a long story short I bought a 02 eliminators cut the cat's and resignators (4 total) and have never had a problem since. I still have the rattle though at early acceleration conditions, but it is just the actually heat sheild bolted underneath the cab of the truck.

Thanks,

If you can climb under your truck and give the cats a bit thump. If they rattle then they're breaking up inside!

My truck has 8000 miles on it, (Its an 04) and the passenger side cat started to degrade at around 1000 miles. It now sounds horrific at idle.

Must get it swapped to a muffler soon! (Not buying a new one - And in the UK means I have NO warranty!)
