Are Lightning's Made To Be Run Hard?
Hey, it's a simple, "reply if you want" question guys, and attacking someone for voicing their opinion will not provide the input HANKFAN is looking for. My two cents worth,,,,,,I like to drive all my vehicles hard and fast when it's appropriate. I do believe in a short, varied speed break-in period, not only for the engine but what's even more important is brakes. One way to assure yourself of problems down the road is to take brand new vehicle out, get it up to a high speed, then have some nimrod pull out in front of you so you now have to brake hard. Now, that's abuse. I think the theory of a few hundred (somewhat easy)miles is valid, then drive it the way you want. It's a machine, and a strongly built one at that. Just make sure you run good clean oil and keep an eye on the coolant levels. It will be fine. Enjoy it while you can. Ray, did you get to the track yet? Curious of the results with the new chip. Sounds promising.

As much as I baby my lightning as far as not driving it in the rain or keeping it clean,I definatly fell strongly about driving it hard.If you dont drive it hard it will be a sled.I have kinda babied my 2000 compared to my 99.My 99 was a tenth of a second faster on the quarter! From now on My foot will be on the floor everytime I drive it.Ive never heard of any of these trucks failing due to driving hard.Usually they are lemons from the factory .I dont suggest doing burn-outs all the time. This puts wear on your tires as well as transmission and rear end.Putting your foot to the floor and hear it scream to red line is another story. If you want it to be fast,It should be drivin hard!
Hi mark,
No,I am pissed,It has rained all day.I was very disapointed not getting to go to the track. What is worse is.......Next wed and fridays streetnights are already cancelled due to the super chevy show.I am not going to be able to go till the following wed.My truck is alot faster now and shifts AWESOME but,I still think Im gonna be off by 2 tenths.I am pretty good at "feeling" a vechicle if you know what i mean.I hope Im running the same as the 99 but it feels to me like a 13.4 truck.Even if the chip knocked off just 5 tenths consistant,It is an absolute steal for the money!.I know most people dont think the air system does anything for HP but I am curious about that too.Im kinda glad sal is backed up,This way I can really get truthful numbers on what each upgrade does.I will definatly post all of the upgrades and time reductions after each upgrade. My guess is as follows only time will tell,Thanks for askingI will also do all mods seperatly and record times. No one has done this yet and i feel it will be a BIG help to all to do this! This way you know what to expect with each mod.Ill be done by july if things go well.filter will be done soon as sal gets caught up and by then my truck should be right around 3500 miles.Right where my other one broke in and I ran a 13.2
STOCK..................13.9
CHIP...................13.4
INTAKE.................13.3
BREAK IN...............13.2.I HOPE
3.73 GEARS.............12.9
Once Im in the 12s I will stop modding it.I am deterined to run 12s on street tire without losing driveabilty.Slicks if i have to.I will not use nitrous. What ever I do at the track,i want to to on the street without the headache of nitrous.

This post is just plain funny, I'm glad some of you decided NOT to become Statisticians or engineers.
"See that dere truck I beat on it, and it ran great for 20,000 miles, and that other one I beat ran great for 50,000 miles."
Man, that is Statistically significant...

I hope NOT to offend anyone hear but have you ever heard the old saying"..I've never met an engineer that was as smart as a he thinks" No flame just an ol saying us bubbas up here in the boondox say once in a while.
I guess now its time for us to hear from all the engineers in here about how the "valvetrain" is always the first to go .AGAIN LOL

Has anyone run their L with max GCW (I think I read that they're good for 5,000#, true??) or more at WOT up any long mountain runs?
Pulling a horse trailer or race car trailer or similarly large load?
Would you recommend them for serious towing of a 5,000# load?

Hey Ray; Too bad about the rain, would like to know more about the Superchip install in a 2000 "L". Of course, it's predicted to be in the triple digits here by Sunday, so your rain sounds pretty good right about now......And of course, don't forget to put on your flame armor, looks like it's going to be a long night......................................
Nothing you will ever do to your truck on purpose will ever be as hard on the engine or transmission as what Ford does to them on the teststands in the plants where they are built. And that's before they have ANY miles on them. There is no reccomended breakin period for the engine anymoer, but Ford does reccomend being easy on the brakes for 300 miles, I think, it's in the owner's manual, go read it.

Lghtningquick,
I feel exactly the same way you do,all i want is a 12 second time slip.and then ill stop modding it in that respect and focus more on the stereo system(my first love, speed is second).I will not use nitrous on it either.Im hoping with just the mods i have i will make it into the low 13's.I may need some drag radials to get it into the 12's tho.
