Unhappy Boost Levels!!!!!

I just had my L out and I decided to see what the max. boost was when I really got on it. I did and all I saw was 7-8 lbs!!! I live at 6000', I need to find a way to increase the boost to get some of that awesome power back in the truck. Any other high altitude L owners have this same problem?

Probably the cheapest route would be to move to sea level. Enjoy the trip!

Snake:

Sea level here and still only 8 lbs. Go find sea level AND cold weather.... Let me know what you find out.......

Seriously, get a good boost gauge... The factory one isn't exactly accurate.

TBL,
You may be right about the gauge but I bought the vehicle in Indiana about a week ago. Their the gauge would constantly max out, and I also realized I was off on the boost it was more like 5-6 here. The power difference between here and sea level is unbelievable!!!! Can't wait to get back their with my modified L.

Cheap way - blower pulley, but watch the rpm limit of the blower.
Expensive way - Holley is releasing a 144 cid blower kit for 5.4 trucks, it includes an intercooled intake manifold. It is intended for N/A 5.4's but I don't think it would be dificult to use as an upgrade. I found some info at Sean Hyland's page. He had it for $5k+.

Please forgive the stupid question, but isn't it a moot point that you're at sea-level or on the top of mount everest if you are running 8 PSI boost? Or is it an 8 PSI difference between ambient and manifold?

Y2K 7700 4x4,
You may have a point but from what I have been lead to believe is that the less oxygen available the less the boost. I will tell you one thing, this truck feels SO much different than at sea level, altitude does affect power in some form or fashion whether it is boost or whatever! If I am wrong someone please tell me

No experience with the L, since I quit driving back to IL 6 years ago,I took my normally aspirated Toy back there, there was a BIG difference in performance when the truck got some O2. I haven't seen the performance that many owners have here at 5000 feet, but I'm guessing when the truck gets some real oxygen, it will perform like all the rest at low altitude. BTW, I bought my L in Chenenne.
PS. (for Colordans)the Fort Collins SVT dealer said he has eight allotted to him this year!! Get in line.

My Lightning registered 7-8 lb max stock. Added Airaid filter kit, now it pins the gauge at 10 every time I punch it.

The roots type blower is a positive displacement pump in that every turn of the blades XXX volume of air is compressed. For the sake of arguement say 1 cup of air for every rotation. One cup of air at sea level contains more oxygen molecules that one cup of air at say 3,000 ft. This results in less air being forced into the manifold.

As far as the stock gauge being pegged(10PSI+) don't go by that. Mine does too, but my Phantom shows 8.5-9 tops.

Unhappy

Snake,

You are in a very similar situation to what I have just experienced. I just moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Denver and I'm seeing about the same problem. Boost gauge used to peg off the scale, now tops at 9-9.5. I realize the gauges are not accurate, but regardless of the actual boost, we're still getting less than we did at lower altitudes. The difference in performance is likewise sickening. IMHO, I don't think I'd go the blower pulley route unless you're very careful. You might check out Sal's site and see what he has to say about it. I know there are a number of people who have used the pulleys, but I can't remember what the results ended up being. I really don't think there's too much to be done about the situation. Move, Pulley, NOS, those are the only choices and for me none of them are great solutions at the moment. If you find out something else, please let us know.

Question

Snake,

Being a Hoosier, where did you buy your Lightning. Family Auto, Alderman, or Tom Wood? I bought mine at Alderman's an enjoy(ed) peggin the crap outta the guage. The wife hates when I say "LOOKY!" at WOT.

Drop me a line if ya get back to Hoosier-land (start a thread) I live about 15 min from the Brickyard and Indpls Raceway Park.

No Gen 2 "L" buddies yet. I've seen a black one a couple times but haven't had the chance to chat w/ him. The only "L" owner I talked to had a Gen 1 and SWORE he had a 4.11 rear end AND they made a few models with a 302. O-K I wanted to B%tch-slap him. I'm stuck listening to my neighbor go on about his Camaro club

This board is therapy.

NINE DAYS TO THE 500 and not soon enough until "INDY F1" Go Jaguar!

Peace

Speedin Bob,
I bought my L at the Bloomington Ford place on May 9. They had 3 on the lot!!! 2 black and 1 red, I was amazed. He said they had them for over a month. The truck was scary fast down their but up it she hurts quite a bit. According to what I have read you lose 2.5% total power for every 1000', so that means my girl lost 54 HP!!! Can't wait to get back to the East and sea-level!
