3.73's gears
I called the local dealer in regards to having the rearend gears changed. They quoted me $248.00 for the gears and the labor was close to $400.00. Then he went on to say that it would void my warranty on the rearend. Even if I used ford parts and had them install the gears.
Does this sound right prices and the warranty?

I gave a really good description of why this may void your warranty in the thread titled "I just don't get it" in the transmission forum. Bottom line is it's more complicated than you may think at first. Give it a read before you change your gears

Ford offers the 373 as an authorized upgrade for the Lightning. They even have the ability to recal the speedometer with FORD software. Surely they must know that the tranny will take it; however, finding someone at Ford to talk to about it might be really tough. Has anybody ever tried to talk to a Ford engineer who designs this stuff. I don't even know where you would begin. Since the 373 is not available in the L when ordering we can't find one, tear down the tranny and see if any of the parts are different.

Brian, Pyle Bros is a differential and I believe tranny place. They do stock and custom work. They usually stock the 4:10 gear, but it seems that a few Lightnings have bought some in the Houston area, so they were out. They are located in Baytown.

man, Pyle Bros in Houston quoted $550 installed. That is ring/pinion, labor, fluid, and shims. All they do is rearends. Might try and find a local shop that just specializes in rearends. Could be cheaper.

The only "unique" part in a Lightning Tranny is the accumulator, teh rest of the parts are all found somewhere else on one model of the tranny or another. The accumulator is purpose built.
If you're really thinking about changing your gears, just think through all that is involved, it's incredibly complicated, messes with the ECM module, computer settings (maybe Sal can help here) and other things. As far as phyasical stress on the drivetrain, well, it's not designed to be changed per se, but it's a pretty stout box and I don't think it's gonna rip the innards out. The L produces 440 lbs of torque, and the PSD 7.3 makes 500, which aft of the converter is 120 lbs difference so I would think that that gives you a little fudge factor. Bottom line, go to a pro who knows drivetrains, this is definitely not a do it yourself mod. The actual work of changing a rearend is pretty straightforward but the design of what your doing is something that a pro needs to think through.
