Talking Picked it up today & Got 2 kills

I was actually thinking about not getting the truck because of getting Jacked around about gears being back ordered and a few other things. But we worked through it and I drove it home and went for a little cruising, ran into a couple of nice guys with a paxton & exhaust on a 99 GT. Ran him twice with 80 miles on the truck and won by two or three feet. He said he runs 13.2's at the track and was amazed at how fast the truck was. On my way home a SS454 chased me down, (he wanted to race bad) after watching him bob & weave through traffic to catch me I made a U turn and two blocks later here he comes. He pulled up and I could hear a blower whirring..OK I thought if I get beat no big deal... From the light L 100 yards SS 75 yards and I shut it down. He went by hard but I think he never would have caught up and he wasnt interested in hunting me down again.

Motor cuts out at the 1-2 shift..

Rides nice, much less noise in the cab then my 99 GMC 1500. The Vortec 5.3 was real weak in 99 so I won't miss it at all...

Yes it is a wise thing to do.I pound my trucks from mile 1 .This way they are broken in the way it will be driven. All in all it has made my trucks very reliable and >>>>>>>>>Noticably faster than the smae truck which was 'babied' during break in.One other thing I have noticed is if you take a truck that was babied for 70,000 miles and start driving it hard you will see alot of things fail.If a truck has been drivin hard its whole life,It is more likley to stay toether.

Uhhhh....if that 99 gt really had a paxton then he would be making at least 340rwhp...so either he didn't really have an S/C or he can't drive worth a damn if you beat him.....

Interesting therory......very scientific approach....
Warning: This is only one persons odd view on how to treat a new engine and driveline. It would be a shame if someone actually followed this procedure and went against the beleives of most every major engine builder in the world. Breaking in a new engine is a process that should not be reduced to "I pound my trucks from mile 1"
Transmissions both Manual and Auto must be run in..... rear end gears take a little bit to mesh properly etc.
Watch what you read in any newsgroup!!! There are many people that don't know what the heck there talking about !!!!

I've heard that the "Beat the ***** outta it" method works best on here from lots of L guys. It seems that it is a popular theory on this board. While this is my first new vehicle and have no idea what works and what doesn't, I never really babied mine and have had no problems so far.

Just my story-

GP kart,
I do know what Im talking about.Ive seen it many times!I dont know why I feel the obligation to prove you wrong but I do so here goes....Every truck Ive owned has always been faster then the same vechicle with the same mods!!PERIOD You could say it is my driving but probally not.Maybe you are right,Baby it so it is a slow P.O.S. That way when the next owner of the truck has it and drives it hard and everything breaks he can call you .Then your reply can be..I always baby'd it.No need to rewrite what I wrote,It was only 2 threads up I think most people only feel like reading it one time dont ya think? If you dont Break in a vechicle hard you are going to end up with a slow-a$$ vechicle.Dont complain when all the other lightnings smoke yours at the track and then come on the board and say"DUH I wonder why my truck is slower than yours?????? Drive it like you stole it If you had any experience of this matter you would see it is true.Obviously YOU dont know what you are tlking about!

MNlightning,
I dont mean do neutral drops and burn the tires off but,You should definatly drive it hard.If you are going to drive it hard later..Drive it hard now.If not it will be slower than the rest and more problems later if it is not used to being driven hard.Take it as you will,This is just my opinion.Good luck and nice kills!

Hey, I was just having fun, so lighten up GP KART. Your thoughts are yours. I have built motors and raced for years. Next time I build a race motor I'll send it to you so you can save me making 12,000 easy passes at the track to rack up 3000 miles. The good thing is its not your truck, so no harm done.

4.6Cobra98, He drove well enough, we both hooked up and he didn't catch up. As far as it not being blown, it was or his throw out bearing was making a weird noise and he made up a lie to cover for the noise. He was very suprised that I beat him. He said last year he was a Rock Falls (a local drag strip) and the L's there were running 13.8's and he was running 13.2's. So its possible he needed a tune up or something because based on everyones comments about their trucks I don't think the L is Running 13.2's off the floor but 13.7's & 13.8's have been had by others on the board.

Either way it was fun and that's why I bought it.

The heads will be coming off very soon and the mod's will start.. I hate to put it down because it's more fun to drive than I thought it would be.

MNLightning,
Finally another minnesota Lightning owner on the board. What color did you get and where did you buy the truck? If you are interested in getting together sometime and check out each others truck or go to Rock Falls let me know. Congrats, Brian

Hey LQ,

Your so not worth it...... if you only had a clue??
When you finish your study on "Pound it from mile 1" please submit it to FoMoCo, GM, Mercedes, BMW and the others. Maybe one day we will see a sticker on the window of our new cars that says "For Maximun Performance Beat this thing from the Get Go"
I wonder why I recieved this 5 page Pre Race manual for the last Sprint Car engine I just bought????

Talking

Hi, bggroth

I would be interested in hooking up after I get the L done. Not into the drag strip, but I might consider going once. I have heard it is much improved, the last time I was at the Rock was in 92. Where is Wanamingo? I am Just West of 494 just before it turns into 94.

Silver Truck, Air Lake Ford.

Hey GP Kart... Why are you so easily offended? Take it easy on LQ we don't want to push his buttons and loose those softened but still colorful comments..

Keep it fast & Keep it FUN...

MNLightning,
I went to Rock Falls twice this year just to see what the L would do, not into racing either.
I live about 40 miles south of the airport. I only drive my L on weekends when weather is nice so if you are looking for somthing to do let me know and maybe we can meet somwhere.

My clue is that GP cart is 40 or over.

Everything that he is trying to convey is correct 20 years ago.

I still like to race rice cycles and they won't even break in with their chromium sidewalls and rings. Get on it hard and fast.

As far are the L's, pretty much the same.

Ford in 1995 has had magnesium pistons boiling their tops off at 14,000 in F1. I don't think these guys are dumb ***’s.

I doubt anyone here is as smart as they think.
