My Lightning in Virginia....???

So, I am heading to University of Virginia this august for graduate school for the next couple years, and I wondered how is this going to be living in Charlottesville with the L.??

First off, it seems that NOBODY drives performance cars at UVa. I did see a COUPLE GT mustangs, and a porsche..... lots and lots of expensive navigators/tahoes/escalades/etc., but not many performance cars. Only thing I could think of as to an explanation is emissions?? will I be in trouble with my setup (LT dynomax headers, high flow cat pipe (2 instead of 4 cats), and magnaflow catback)?

Also, the place obviously does get snow--but, I also live retardedly close to campus (i.e. 2 blocks from bars, 15-20 minute walk to engineering school) so I'm not sure how much I'll REALLY be driving. I'd imagine the amount of snow they get there is enough that I can just do errands when there's none on the ground, and walk when there is??

lol.... just bored/typing, I think.

I lived in VA for 7 months (May-Dec) in 2003. It's a far cry from TX let me tell you. In fact, of all the states I've lived (quite a few), VA is probably the worst for performance vehicles. 55 speed limit, lots of state police, detectors illegal, etc.

It does snow, but it didn't keep me from driving that I remember. Of course, I lived in the city, I think Charlottesville might be more rural, or at least, less "big-cityish". Troyer is in VA, so you should be able to get tuned properly for the weather.

BTW, I'm originally, from CT but changed my legal residency to TX. I love that state! Good luck in the Commonwealth.

NOVA traffic: Good luck

There are a bunch of nice cars. There is even a local chapter(NLOC) of Lighting people. There is also a very good shop local also.

The roads are nice. The law is not.

You will be fine

I've lived in Virginia my whole life. I live about an hour from charlottesville in manassas, and we do not get that much snow. I think I didnt drive the truck maybe three times last year because of weather conditions. The reason there are not many performance vehicles is because Charlottesville is pretty much all country except for the school, there are no need for these kind of trucks, just regular f-150's. And Baddgene is right, the laws are not performance friendly in VA.

performance friendly as in street racing, or modifying, or both?

I can forsee me not driving much while at UVa, but I don't wanna be worrying all the dang time when I am--will the 2 cats instead of 4 give me problems?

When you get to UVA. you will be about 1 hour East of our new shop in Covington, Va. ( Troyer Performance)
There are several Cobras around, but in the past 6 months I have only seen about 3 Lightnings, not counting Mikes.
The speed limit is 65 here, not 55. Premium fuel is readily available, and the are several racers in the area.....

Oh yeah, that's right. But, anything over 80 mph is considered reckless driving. As well as anything over 15 mph over the posted speed limit. Ask me how I know Not entirely thanks to my Troyer tuned Flip chip I might add.

Not to worry Mike. There is no emission testing here. With the Virginia State inspection they throw a rag over your tips for leaks that's it. Why would you register in VA?

As said before, no radar detectors, they are confisicated.

As far as street racing, what state is that legal in anyway?

I haven't driven in Texas so, I don't know how it compares.
The troopers here are just interested in keeping us from killing ourselves or somebody else.

The only Interstate sections that are 55 are considered highly congested.
Most throughout the State its 65 and they are leniet, to a point.

Welcome to Virginia.
The Old Dominion.
Mother of the Presidents.
Charlottesville is beautiful.

if you are in nova. then check out racersden.net and loom section of nloc.

the laws in virginia have very stiff penalties for the infractions.

They can't take them from you...they only write down the number on it and give you a ticket. Not that I know from experience but a few buddies have been caught before.
Welcome to VA....we do have several 10 second trucks here in the tidewater area.

Thanks for that info. There used to be signs up that RDs would be seized but, I guess they have been taken down for awhile now.

When I Googled it, I found that they still confiscate the detector in some parts of Canada.

In France they seize the automobile!

Most of my younger life, at least before I did my 10 year stint in Uncle Sams Canoe Club, I lived in Staunton, VA. which is just over the hill or mountain from Charlottesville. As a matter of fact, most of my remaining relatives still live there and I can tell you the state troopers strictly enforce the laws in that state. They don't care much for hot rodders and they have also been known to hand out tickets for loud exhausts. Don't ask me how I know. But I must say, there is some mighty nice realestate in the Charlottesville area.

my dad went to UVa 35 years ago. he said that the town looks alot the same as he remembers it, except that there's aren't nearly as many 'hotrodders' as he remembered. he said he remembered many muscle cars roaming the streets back them.

guess times have changed. maybe I'll help bring them back .... or just get alot of tickets... haha

I will agree with your dad. The first Shelby Cobra I ever saw, other than in a magazine was parked on the UVA campus. I don't want to give away my age here, but as you might guess, I'm certainly no spring chicken.
