Lightnings in Virginia

I am in the Richmond/Chesterfield area, just a rock throw east on I 64, there are at least a dozen, probably two dozen Lightnings on the roads around here.
The State Police around here will give you 10 MPH over the limit, execept on I 95 on the way to DC, I have been going 80 + and have had a State Trooper pass me on more than one occsasion. The trick around here is to stay out of the fast lane and do not pass too many cars. Now Maryland is a totally different story on I 95, the Troopers in MD will stop you in a heartbeat, with no warning tickets, especially if you have out of state plates.

I have a couple buddies that live in Charlottesville, it's a great place. There are some NICE looking Honeys there to, and there are a few fast rides here and there. You'll definitely like it there, and as far as snow, there isn't much at all(if any).

Uva

I live in Chesterfield which is the county to the southwest of Richmond. Charlottesville is a very beautiful place. I'm a sucker for the mountains. Recently I'd heard that Charlottesville real estate was really jumping up. It seems to be a very popular place to live these days. I know the that UVA has a reputation as of a bunch of rich kids driving BMWs and expensive SUVs. But who am I to talk, at least they had the grades to make it into one of the state's toughest schools. There is no way I would have gotten' in! I personally thought it was sort of an eclectic town. Dave Matthews Band is from there. The people I know in Charlottesville are big into their local scene. I can't say I've seen many L's in that area but it might be because of the colder weather than here in Richmond. 4X4s are always popular in mountainous areas. I see an L around town here in the Richmond area about every day.
Anyway, enough about that. My L has the Dynatech long tubes with high flow cats and a Bassani behind that. I haven't had the state inspection people say anything to me. We don't have emissions test here in Richmond. As far the the cops go, just run with the pack, don't be the leader or the last guy. Don't get hung out in the left lane by yourself. Especially since your L is red.
What will your master's work be in?

thanks for the info! I definitely find charlottesville to be an eclectic and exciting, yet laid back city at the same time.....yet not exciting enough to have Lightnings/cobras/etc??!! what gives! jk

I have also heard several rumors of kids there being affluent, and proud of it....but I didn't find that to be so much the case when I went to visit a few weeks ago. Well, at least not as much as the people I'm used to hanging out with (Baylor students).

I'll be doing my Master's work in Structural Engineering and Solid Mechanics. I'm a little worried, however, because my undergrad is mechanical engineering....so this will be a slight side-stepping for a masters, but, I suppose, not too far off the path. ce la vie.

FWIW, my .02...

Virginia is a nice place, beaches to mountains. you are only about 45 minutes northwest of me. I'm in the far west end of Richmond. Charlottesville is a beautiful place and UVA is a very good school.

Emissions testing is not required in the Charlottesville area of VA. Regardless, you only need to have a VA state inspection if you register the truck here. But the standard VA state inspection is nothing special, mainly safety stuff, brakes, lights, etc.

Speed limits vary.

alot of people point out that radar detectors are illegal here... LOL, IMHO, this is a VERY good thing. simply because this means that 90+ % of the drivers on the roads DO NOT have radar detectors. You know what this means? The police departments don't feel the need to spend money on high end radar guns, nor laser guns.
EVEN BETTER, few cops have or bother to use "INSTANT ON" radar! most of the time, you can pick up a radar trap a mile away, because they are using a K or Ka band radar and it's continuously on. even though detectors are illegal, only a few state troopers are equipped with "detector detectors". If you are running a Valentine 1, they are invisible anyway. Regardless of this, the fine for having a detector is very small compared to the possible costs of a speeding ticket, fines, court costs, insurance hikes, etc.
One other thing, the police in VA CAN confiscate your detector if they want to... MOST DO NOT do this, but THEY CAN. However IF they confiscate your detector, they are REQUIRED by law to return it to you when you appear in court. this would require the officer to keep track of the detector and keep it in good condition for you, so for that reason, if you ever get caught with one, they'll likely just write down the serial# and give it back to you.

another thing, you are within reasonable driving distance of at least 4 different drag strips (Richmond, VMP, Colonial Beach, MIR) and a very nice road course (VIR)!

enjoy VA, it's a nice place once you get to know it!

let me know if I can help with anything...

later,
Chris

P.S. My dad was a "Hokie", in fact I was born in Blacksburg/Radford, but I won't hold the UVA thing against you!
