I am getting an awful lot of brake squeal with various applications (ie braking force). I can almost always make it stop by slightly varying the brake pedal pressure.

Is this common or what?

I got the same crap. Had it on the '94 L also. Never found a way to get it to stop. Does anyone have any ideas.

I've have had a brake squel one the rear right side for a while now. I told the dealer about it when I took it in for service at around 12,300 miles and they would not look at it unless I agreed to p0ay for the inspection if they found nothing wrong since it was after 12,000 miles. Needless to say I still have it at around 21,000 miles. So get it checked out before it's too late.

 

My back brakes are squealing as well. Wish I could find a way to make them stop !!

Mine squeal on light brake application, but it goes away if I brake harder. Lots of dusting also. I figured I'd try some kevlar pads whenever I replace brake pads. I've had good luck with kevlar in the past, no squeal and minimal dusting.

 

I'm sufferin from L frustration (albeit minor).

1. Binders are a sqealing.
2. Got the A-arm clunk.
3. Passenger window makes a "thump-thump" when i lower it.

Luckily, no intercooler trouble (knock knock)

Goin in for a fixin next week.

Speedin Bob, I have the exact same problems as you. The window and brakes just started last week.

 

I've had sucess in the past by doing 3-4 FIRM stops (almost to the point of lock up- or is it anti-lock up) with cars- mostly German. But this is only a temp solution. Squeal comes back do to the way I drive(light pedal pressure-little high speed xx-0, etc., plus I'd rather crash than brake ) I've found pads that squeal usually have a shinny glaze over their contact surface. Maybe thats what gets burnt off with the semi- panic stops.

I took mine into the dealer about the brakes squealing at about 12k miles. They inspected my brakes and said they were all fine. The culprit was glazing. They told me they could fix it for $100 but that I would likely get it back within 5k miles, 5 months or there about.

I think I will probably do it before too long. I hate squealing brakes. It still stops quick, so no real problems.

My brakes dont squeal but my right rear suspesion does, bad.

 

Yup....have it under very light pressure. No big deal. If it happens under heavier pressure, then I would worry a bit more.

It's not that it's big deal, just embarrassing to have a nice new shiny truck come squealing to a stop.

 

Just picked up my 2000 silver L on Sat and it also has the brake squeal coming from the back.

Brake squeling is a strange deal. I have never had brake squealing. I rarely if ever have the need to stand on the brakes. It appears that heating up the brake pads causes them to glaze and the glaze is causing the squealing. If you are glazing your pads by strong brake application you can do one of two things. Remove pads and sand off the glaze (block sander and coarse to medium paper or buy pads that don't glaze. People seem to have good luck with the carbon metallic sold at Autozone and others. An earlier post had the info you need to get the correct pads as the L is not yet listed but the pads needed fit other ford products if you know which ones and that info was in the post. Do a search.

PS Heated up glazed pads can also be caused by riding the brake pedal with your left foot or calipers that don't release properly.
