AWD
Why didn't they put all wheel drive on the lightning? It would in prove traction so much.
Has anyone experimented doing this on a 1st or 2nd genaration lightning?
I bet you could use a Explorer/Exp./Nav. awd system

Not worth it considering the added weight. SVE is running around in an Expedition with the lightning engine/tranny. The weight kills it though. Expect a few hundred pounds more for front wheel drive, dramatically slowing it down.
A Dodge Stealth (I raced against this one on a open SCCA track (same vehicle as a mitsu 3000 GT VR4)) twin turbo AWD weighed in at 4200 lbs on an SCCA scale. Almost 800 lbs more than the 2 wheel drive version. I out ran him in the corners and straights with my stock 98 mustang GT. He was also running a boost adjuster set at 15 psi, making over 100 more hp than my GT, but slower due to the extra weight.

98_SVT_COBRA,
I really wouldn't believe everything you hear. There is only one Typhoon that I know that runs fast and is 2 wheel drive.
I go to the Sy/Ty nationals every year and the fast ones are all using all-wheel drive.
Check one out here:

My friends should be running 9.xxs this year!
Traction is a big problem on the Lightning and AWD would be nice!

AWD was originally slated for the Gen2 lightning. when they put the pencil to it, it came in way over the 29,995 MSRP, which apparently was etched in stone. the story was in the Car and Driver with the black "L
" on the cover last year.

There are a few locals here that pulled out the stock trans/transfercase. They claim they picked up considerably. They do run on slicks though. About the traction problem, of all the cars I've ever owned this is the easiest of all to launch well.
Pacecar18,
I agree with you the AWD Syclones and Typhoons are bada$$. Nothing and I mean nothing will beat the Syclone or Typhoon off the line unless the driver is asleep.
People need to spend more time at the track before any comments are made.

Yeah, My uncle used to have a typhoon.
He had all of the mods that you could think of on it and he could kill my dad's vette.
My parents our buying me a car this summer and I would love to get a nice ty, but they said only $10,000. So i'll get ether a N/A 300ZX, our mybe a integra.

Jason,
I agree that it will be hard to find a Typhoon for around $10,000, but a Syclone shouldn't be so hard.
Definately a vehicle I won't regret owning when I sell it. It sure is fun seeing the look from other drivers when you blast off the line in a truck.
I'll sell you mine for $10,000!
Still gotta pay for my Lightning.

Well, I have a 1991 S-10 Ext. Cab with all options which is the same interior as a Sy. and I would like to get something differnt and something I can hual people around.
One other question, can I tow anything with a Sy. or Ty. because I have a couple Jets Skis and dirt bikes that I haul around.

I actually almost bought a Syclone from a collectables dealer a couple years back... glad I waited for the Lightning though. I've always wanted the Sy ever since they came out, but the styling was just getting too 'dated' by 1998.
Incidently, this particular truck did have a 'hidden' tow hitch installed. The tow 'frame' if you will was installed in such a way that it was completely hidden from view unless you crawled or looked up underneath the rear bumper (did the Sy have a bumper?). In order to tow, you installed the 'hitch/receiver bar' (can you tell I have no idea what I'm talking about yet?) that would attatch to the frame, that would then drop down underneath and to the rear of the bumper. I don't remember if this system was a custom one-off or anything, but you would think that there would be a kit somewhere or something.
Anyway, I'm kinda tired of showing my ignorance for one post. Good luck!

I have to agree with you on the outdated styling compared to today's newer cars. I think my truck always will look mean, but I really like the styling of the new Lightnings. The Syclone's had no rear bumper and only had a rollpan in back
As far as a tow hitch I have seen two kinds, but don't think they were made by a manufacturer.
One was behind the license plate and you could flip up the license plate to install the receiving hitch.
The other was as you described above.
