Lets talk 60' times
Lets talk 60' times
OK guys. I need some help setting up my suspension. My truck makes 500+hp, I have QA-1's out back, JDM traction bars, and 28x14.5 QTP's. I also have a 2400 stall converter. I can't seem to get better than 1.7 short times. I don't spin at all. I have been running 16psi on the tires, and my QA-1's at setting 2. Should I put more air in until I start to get spin? Should I stiffen/loosen my shocks? I assume since I'm not getting spin, stiffening things up would be quicker, am I right in this thinking? What RPM should I launch at? My truck is an 00, so I still have the stock 3.55's, I know that hurts me, but don't plan on changing. I used to be able to get 1.84's on nitto's with less power, so I think I should be able to get wayyy better than 1.7's with 500hp and full slicks. Any ideas?
How many passes are on your tires? I run the same tires you do and when they where new it seemed like the truck didnt 60' and i was not spinning.
After a bunch of passes and heating the crap out of them my truck started getting better and better.

When you say 500+ is that like close to 600 or just over 500? I would definately invest in a set of hoosiers and set the rear shocks to #3 but that depends on your personal preference and how the truck hooks. Me personally, I leave at about 1600-1700 range and have the rears set on 3. I run a 30" tall tire although I am pushing a bit more hp than you but I have seen 1.50/1.51 60's which I am sure I could better in certain conditions. Another big factor is the weight of your vehicle. Some guys go to the track with the bare bones and others like to go at full weight. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the replys. I think my hoosiers are pretty old. I bought them from E-luzion, who I believe bought them from Tallimecca. But they don't seem to spin. I think I was leaving at about 1500 rpm this weekend, but I honestly couldn't remember. My truck was also FULL weight. I'm going to strip some for this weekend.

I was making 496/562 rear wheel, without a stall and I would average 1.74-1.77 60fters. Everyone was telling me I needed a stall, but I never went that route. Considering you have one the only difference is (with the info you are leaving) - I did have an '03 with 3:73's and I took the front anti-sway off (plus the spare, trailer hitch, pass seat).
I haven't taken the '99 out, but I sure notice a difference on the street with the gear difference (my 3:73's are in a box waiting for install).
I also know my tuner doesn't add much under 3000 rpm maybe it is a tune issue?

I seem to be able to run 1.6's all day. And my hp is only in the 450+ range. I start off at 18psi...and lower it as needed depending on track prep. I run QTP's out back...58" ranchos.....PI 2600 stall.....Strange shocks in the rear. And of course...stock rear end/gears.
1. Maybe your rubber IS seeing the end of it's life
2. Trying different psi
3. Bad track prep
4. Try going with a 3:73 gear

keep adding pressure til you spin then back off a 1/2 lb. i run up to 23psi in my QTPs, then again my 60s suck, but she doesn't spin. that is how i get my best 60s, and that was the consensus when i asked this question a while back-- run as much psi as you can without spinning.
Whip,
1.7's arent all that bad
THATS BETTER THAN 90% OF VINNIES
Really they're not all that bad, the more power you have the harder it's going to be to put it down. I average 1.6's (sometimes low 1.7's) on 100% stock suspension, although I do have 1.5's under my belt (including the last pass I made). BTW, I found NO diff in 60ft with the stock convertor vs the aftermarket convertor's, (not yet at least).

Whip, when you put the good tune in, I would guess your 60's will come down along with your ET. When I was on the return road, it sure sounded tough coming down through there.
Your running a lot more tire than we were. Those wide tires are heavier (rotating mass) and on a VHT'd track, make a lot more contact to a sticky surface. My 60' times were off as well as the red Mach 1's. I had a 1.82 and a 1.80. My truck had been in the 1.7's the last 3 times at the track.

Congrats on the truck by the way, that vid up here was awesome.
Here's the story with the slicks. First of all, they originally were Don's. Then they went to another Don (me)haha, then they went to Mike, and now you have them.
I NEVER had good luck with those. I think they are just too wide. Mike had a vew high 1.7's on them, but didn't even usually use them much. I don't think Don had used them much at all.
Now, you can remember me bitching about my 60ft times all the time. I have the QA1's and traction bars like you. I put a set off full Hoosier slicks on there and HOLY ****!!!! NIGHT AND DAY from the QTP's. I went from running low 1.9's on hoosiers to high 1.7's. Still on the 355's and stock convertor, but I did add a 6lb lower. Only issue is I can't run on street night, but that's ok with me. Nothing but a cluster **** at NED on street night anyhow.
I think those rims would hold a set of 28 inch (i think they are 10.5's???) by 16's no prob. I bet my life you will drop into the 1.6's.
Set them at about 15lbs cold and do a nice burnout. Witht he convertor, you should be able to launch around 1900.
Good luck
