Post Possible Blasphemy, need advice:

Long story, try to make it short, and skip the first part.
My 89 year old Mom died suddenly a week ago Sunday. Took wife, brothers and grandkids out to CA. for funeral and assistance for Dad.

They were military, and collected a lot of stuff over the years and have a very large home full of same. Dad has decided to sell the house and dispose of the stuff. Rather than auction it off, he wants the remaining children and grandchildren to have it.

The portion that Pat and I and our kids/grandkids would receive would fill a very large pickup and the largest U-Haul you can tow, plus Mom's 92 Town Car and whatever U-Haul it can tow.

My Lightning is not capable of this and I am thinking of trying to break my 3 year lease at 1 year and try to trade for a SuperCrew with Tow Package.
Question for my friends out there is,can you break a lease that soon, turn it over into another lease and not lose your shirt.
Forgot, there are lots of SuperCrews on dealer lots in Southern Cal. and I could probably work a courtesy delivery if I could make a deal.

Sorry to bother you with my problems, but maybe someone out there is knowledgable about how to get out of a lease at 1/3 term.

Bill

First, I'd like to offer my condolences on your loss.

I think you might be surprised at what the Lightning can tow if you dont mind having the tail wag the dog a bit. But, I dont know how much stuff you've got so if ya think the L wont tow it, consider getting a one-way Uhaul rental. You can rent their large trucks and the trucks themselves can tow a trailer. That might be the way to go when you consider the short-term need for towing capacity as well as the penalties you might be saddled with if you have to break your lease.
Best Wishes,
Nathan

Sorry to hear about your Mom. Hope you and the family are taking it well.

As far as the lease goes I'm no expert but I'll share what I know. It's fairly simple if the lease is assumable. Just advertise and sell the L like it was owned by you and the bank, ask for money down (your equity, yes you have some) and the buyer will takeover your lease payments. The lender (leaser?) has the contract transfered for a small fee and the new owner finishes the lease. If it's not assumable, I don't know. Maybe there is an independent lease broker in your town who could also advise you further.

Hate to see you sell the L, I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

Good luck...... Joel

So sorry to hear that. I'll be thinking about you and the family. Can't help you with info on the L but everything happens for a reason.

Sorry to hear of Loss, hope the best for you and your family.

Rent a Large U Haul Truck and car trailer, one-way.
It's probably cheaper.
If you’re really contemplating this, it seems the lightning may not be the right vehicle for you. This seems an ill rational decision, based on the fact that this is a one time deal, and how much money you have put into a lease vehicle...

You just have to ask yourself: Do I really like my Lightning?
If the answer to that question is yes, don’t sell it…
If the answer is no, then that will require some additional pondering.

Bill, so sorry for your loss. I pull a trailer once a week with mine that is over 4000 lbs. If you get the balance right (front to rear) you won't know it's there. I used to pull the sane trailer with a 3/4 ton Chev. It had more trouble with the weight(not as much power)and would not stop nearly as fast. We don't need to lose you as a L owner!!

Sorry for your loss.

You will take a bath if you try to get out of a 3 year lease after the 1st year. Big roll over into new lease and payments would be HIGH! Renting the UHaul one way would be a lot cheaper. I sold cars for a while in my life time and leases are great for the dealer and horrid for the leasee if you get out early.

Can't offer any better advice than others have posed, but I would hate to lose you as a fellow L. devotee. I am actually thinking of renting a U-Haul round trip to pick up my boat rather than put all those miles on my L. Whatever you decide, still looking forward to meeting you and your family when I come to Georgia. I will bring some pictures that may be of interest to you. Condolences to you and your family.

Thanks all for the input re Mom, particularly, and also breaking the lease.
I do have an appointment with the finance director of the dealership from which I leased the Lightning tomorrow.
Bearing in mind that the truck has only 7k miles after 11 months and still has 80% original rubber, my sales guy feels that the truck might bring a premium price. It also has about $4k of usable upgrades that I may be able to recover a portion of.
Part of our dilemma is that value the goods we would bring back from CA is worth far more than the truck in total, and the cost to have a moving company do the job is really horrendous.
I will report back tomorrow after I meet with the Leasing person.

Bill,

Regarding the lease, as long as the truck is in good condition you should not have a problem breaking the lease. I broke a 4 year lease after 1 year on my Dodge Ram to get the Lightning, which I financed. You will obviously lose some money, but it's not as bad as they make you think, as long as you're going to bring them more business, and the Lightning is a fairly easy to sell vehicle. Most people will probably try to screw you over though. You actually would lose out just as bad if not worse if you decided you wanted to buy the L after leasing it.

Mike

Bill,
I'm very sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope you Dad is taking it okay. Tell him the F150 Lightning board members send him our condolences & prayers.

Your that last one that I'd ever guess that would be getting rid of the bolt. You were just talking about when you and your wife purchased Moby. Well good luck on your adventure and I do hope you keep the Bolt because you will be sorely missed here.

Good Luck,
Terry

BTW- Is your father coming back to Georgia with you.

Sorry for your loss Bill.

Rent the big truck and if ya hafta tow something rent a dolly and tow Moby with it. Ya gotta look at it this way: What would ya do if ya didn't have the Lightning? Run out and buy a truck for one haul? Nah, rent one.

Bill, sorry to hear. I lost my mom last year and I know how you are feeling.

Regarding a lease. If you have a three lease and into it one year, you are as I have heard salesman say, "an owner." Generally the lease buy out is tremendously more than the unit is worth. And you would have to come up with the difference. If you traded it in on another, that difference would be put up on top of the new purchase making the second purchase impossible to get out of if you ever decided to purchase again later on.

A lease can be assumed but you would have to get your lender's approval. And the new owners would have to qualify and re-sign all new paperwork which would take you off the lease 100%.

Don't let someone just take over your lease payments. You will still be responsible for them. if they miss one or two or three, etc, it will hurt your credit.

I hope I have given you a little help.

Did you know that a Lighting can tow 5,000 lbs?

Jim
