Supercharger Chatter
Supercharger Chatter
Hey Guys,
I have been a member for a while and just viewed this board for the great information that it has, but now I am seeking some advice or information. I have 01 lightning with a few mods that were all done by JDM, 4lb pulley, exhaust, boost bypass,line-mod valve, filter, exhaust, and deep sump tran cover along with an older jdm superchip tune that I know needs to be updated. I bought the truck with all this work done to it from a friend of mine and I know the truck was driven harder here and there but mostly sat in a garage like it does for me now. To get to my story I have been hearing a chatter sound coming from the engine bay, with the hood open or sitting behind the wheel in the truck the noise sounds comparable to a diesel when it idles. When I had the truck at the ford dealer for the cruise control recall I asked the mechanic if that sounds normal to you and he took his stetsascope and narrowed it down to the supercharger and I heard he let me hear it too. He along with shop foreman told me it's the gears inside that are actually chattering. I asked if it was normal? was it low on fluid? but they wouldn't really elaborate all they said the truck is out of warranty is all they cared about but raised concern to me is that what is the underlying issue here, can I get this fixed of course not buy them because all they were quoting me was for a new Eaton and if I can get this one either rebuilt or if it's something less than I'll go that route before. So any info on what it could be and what I can do to fix this issue would be a plus. Thanks and sorry for the novel.

What would that mean, I am not to mechanically inclined. Will it do harm to anything, does it need to be looked at. What's a resolve to the issue. Should the supercharger be redone. Thanks for responding.
it is probably cavitation. does it got away after it warms up? do a search for "cavitation".
stiegemeier can rebuild your blower. if you think there is really an issue, send it to them and they will inspect it. might as well get it ported while you're at it. check out stiegemeier.com

That seems to be common after some miles on a lot of the superchargers. My guess is that it's most likely the front rotor bearings. A lot of people say its nothing to worry about, but I have spare one with the same problem that needs to be repaired. There is noticable wear where the rotors are contacting the case. It may not be critical at this point but if this is your problem I would plan on getting it fixed at some point before the wear becomes significant.
First off Thanks for all your replies, I appreciate the advise. I am not a mechanic so I won't be saving money on sendng it out myself but I will have to go somewhere which I don't know where being new to the tampa bay area.
The noise get's less as I drive around for a longer period of time but this is gonna bother me until it get's fixed and I guess the porting is now worht it since it will have to be sent out.
