stupid speed laws
Up bright and early, taking my L. to Camarillo Independent to have JBAs installed. Down the Central Ave. on-ramp to the 101, there's a semi in the right lane so I punch it. Traffic is pretty light, only a Durango in the #2 lane going about 75 and an Escort in the #1 lane 3 or 4 car lengths behind the Dodge. However, as I start to head for the gap to move to the #1 lane, the Escort speeds up to 85 to prevent me from moving over. This ticks me off, so I move to the #3 lane and gas it, pass the Durango, and move over to the #1 lane in front of the Escort, slowing to about 80 - 85. However, my off ramp is coming up pretty soon, so I start moving over to get in the #4 lane, just about the time I see some pretty red lights come on in my rear-view. It is a smoky in a plain white wrapper, and I pull over to the shoulder and stop. He comes up to my passenger door, and I can see he is pissed. "Do you know how fast you were going?" "No, sir." "Well, I got you on my radar at 118." Holy *****, is my internal reaction. No way I could be going that fast for just briefly nailing it. I am contrite and apologetic, though, and he winds up writing me for "in excess of 100 m.p.h." He practically insists I go back to his unit and look at the radar display. Sure enough, 118.9.
Then, to cap off my sad day, I get to the mechanic and he has no drive on lift, so he refers me to a muffler shop in Oxnard. I go there, and after much inspection, reading of instructions, and scratching of heads, they are ambivalent about tackling the project, but I am sure I don't want to entrust my L. to them. A thoroughly crappy day.
So, anybody know what the fine is in Calif. for exceeding 100 m.p.h? And how many points it is worth? And, can anybody recommend a good radar detector, preferably stealthy?

this membership list is getting longer by the day. if he got you on radar, he should have written the exact speed, not in excess of: ( that's a guesstimate), might not hold up, but you will have to fight that one anyway, i'm sure it will be a big one. or hire a traffic atty for a couple hundred, to take care of it. don't think a detector would have helped you, in that situation. sounds like he saw you, then pulled the trigger, anyone would be dead meat.
BBQ, this is one ticket I can't afford to fight. He had me dead to rights, and if I took it to court I'd get crucified. He was just being nice by being vague about the exact speed, he told me that if he wrote me for 118 it would have to mean an instant trip before the magistrate.
i hope you have a squeeky clean record, and a very understanding insurance co., i just went thru this (speeding/reckless/excess acell) all on 1 ticket (dead to right), cost $50 and can't get another ticket for 1 more week. if so, all info to ins co dropped.
Sorry to hear about the bad day you're having.
From your description my guess is that he wrote you up for violation of 22348(b) VC, driving "a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than 100 miles per hour".
Per the Vehicle Code the first conviction carries a fine not to exceed $500 and the possibility of a suspended driver's license for a period not to exceed 30 days (at the court's discretion).

Yes, he was nice.

Immediatly move out of California. Move to Houston where we have a great justice system. The attorneys pay the Judges and we pay the attorneys. I have several who do nothing but tickets. I've only lost once and the Jury was out for almost an hour. All the rest of the times, dropped......

Hey Alphadoggy, drive that section on freeway again. Check for the signs about radar enforcement. Not all sections of 101 are legal for radar. It's probably moot if he didn't put radar use down on the ticket. BTW, there is a great muffler shop near Ojai thst would probably be a good choice for your header install. Guy that owns it is a racer and a real good wrench. Name of the shop is Quality Muffler, 646-8677. Ask for James. Another place is Muffler Times in Camarillo, on Dawson. Guys name is Ed.

Totally hurting with you. Jared and I go for our little escapade in about 2 weeks and I am worried like you would not believe. Too bad not everybody shared the same opinion as us that it takes an average driver to drive the speed limit without crashing but it takes a damn good driver to not only climb above 115 but do it with all those other average drivers in the way and not crash...
Good Luck, Fingers Crossed, Three Footed Bunny Hoppin Around The House Looking For His Other Paw and all that hokus pokus not to mention a quick prayer to the Patron Saint of Racers...Andretti.

Thanks for the good wishes, Christy, and the advice, w.l. I will go back and check that section of 101, but I don't think it will do me any good. He just put 100+ on the ticket; no mention of radar, although I know he didn't pace me, I didn't have my foot in it that long. I think the speed laws in this country are absurd, they are basically revenue generating mechanisms. On the Autobahn nobody would have blinked an eyelid. I can drive my boat as fast as I want as long as I don't run into anyone, and my friend can fly his plane as fast as he wants, same deal. I had nothing but clear road ahead; no way was I endangering anyone.
Anyway, I get home and there is a UPS package on my doorstep. I open it and it is the Gorilla wheel locks I ordered from Discount Tire. There is an envelope enclosed saying it would be a good idea to have an extra key, send $8.50 and the lock # to Gorilla and they will send me one. I think this is probably a good idea, except I can't find any registration #. I call Gorilla and explain, and a very nice woman tells me to send them one of the locks and they will send me another key, gratis. So, I go out to the truck to make sure it is the right lock. No way! It won't even go on the threads, and it has a conical base and not a flat one. Then my dog bit me, and my wife tells me she is leaving me for someone she met in a chat room. (Just kidding about dog and wife). Ever have a totally ********d up day?
(I'm afraid to watch the UCLA - Ball State game, I know my beloved Bruins are going to lose.)
Well, at least I was wrong about that- only bright spot in the whole day

Slightly off subject but related,
I have a friend that is a RF engineer and really got tired of paying for speeding tickets. He took his radar detector, two 8 watt RF feed horns and wired them together. This is how it works, his radar detector has multiple LED’s that indicate how powerful the source signal is and when it gets to a certain point it turns his radar detector off and turns the 2 feed horns on for 3 seconds. This blows the cops receiving input of the radar gun; unfortunately it also blows everyone else’s (us) radar detectors!
I guess more R&D needs to be done. I won't tell you the other strange times that he builds, geez, the guy should just black mail people.

how can an over 100mph, not land in court? can you simply plead guilty, pay a fine on a chart, and go about your business ( in calif.)? most states, you are going to see the judge, no matter what.
if you end up in court, plead not guilty, you will get to see an assist DA, they will make a deal you both can live with.

Mark and Strohm, he did cite me for 22348(B), but did not put actual speed on citation, just 100+. He did put a court day on the citation, but if I interpret it correctly I can forfeit the bail and not have to appear in court. The last thing I want to have to do is go before a judge and explain why I got my picture taken at 118. I don't mind paying a traffic attorney if I thought it would do any good, but I don't see how it could, he got me dead bang. It will take a few days for the ticket to get into the system, at which point I'll call the clerk and see if I can just forfeit the bail. If it is a mandatory appearance then I guess its attorney time.
