Talking Ran LS1 and LT1

Another nice day means more local street racing(track opens in 2 weeks!), today I ran three times. First run was against a 96 Z28("automagic"),it was actually close until about 30 then I pulled by about 3 cars and the kid quit. I pulled in talk to him and his friend who watched us run asked if I'd go w/ him,I accepted. He had a 99 Z28(stick),I pulled him outta the shoot and quickly pulled by about 5/6 cars and then shut her down.We wheeled back aound to the lot and talked a bit. Both guys were cool and had many ??? about my L.
I was very suprised by the runs, not that I scored kills, but by the fact the LT ran closer. Both were stock,I'm guessing the guy w/ the stick just wasn't adept enough for nice smooth gear changes.Any ideas?
Oh yeah. The 3rd run came later,Supra TT. It was close outta the hole(His nose was about 2 1/2 feet in front of my nose),but when he went to third he really started pulling away, and his car started gettin loose. His back end was all over the place. I back off big time.In any event I lost that one .
Tlak w/ the Supra owner,he was heavily modded,he claimed he was putting 430 horses to the ground.Damn! I didn't feel so bad after seeing the mods and hear the hp.

Nice runs - it's always more fun with real sportsmen. I guess we all have to accept that those Supras really kick butt. I ran across a heavily modded one the other night, but the guy wouldn't go. Either too confident to waste his time or not sure exactly what was under my hood - probably didn't want to waste his time.

I had a run in with a Supra TT on the freeway to work one morning. He had a large fart-can exhaust out the back. It was pretty much even we hit it from 70 & went to probably just over 100. He was ahead of me when he jumped on it, & he pretty much just stayed there after I got on it. Was still a nice fri morning race b4 work

Alright... someone straighten me out here... I thought the order of slowest to fastest was as such....

Base Camaro (any recent year)
pre 98 Z28
LT1 (pre 98?) (isn't this a z28?)
LS1 (98-99?)

Is an LS1 an SS?

I know the pontiac versions are in there too.... HELP!!!!!

LightningDammitt, you just about got it.

1993-1997 Z28s & TransAms had a 275HP 5.7L/350 called the LT1. (in 1996, the horsepower was upped to 285). If you got the SS option(in the Z28) or the RamAir option (in the TransAm) it bumpped your HP to 305.

1998-current Z28s & TransAms use an all new 5.7L/350 called the LS1. It is rated at 305HP. If you get the SS or RamAir options, it puts out 320HP.

We have a 1997 Trans Am with the 285HP LT1. We have also driven alot of cars with the LS1 engine. The LT1 has much better low-end power then the newer LS1, but hit 4000RPM, and the LS1 really comes alive and puts the older LT1 to shame.

Last Friday we raced our TA at the 1/8 mile drags (in Denton). Although our TA could not compete with the Lightnings, there were some LS1 Trans Am bringing in times just as good, if not better then the Lightnings.

Hope this helps. Happy Racing!!

Guys,

I've seen a number of stock LS-1s run low, mid-13s. Granted, they still wouldn't beat a Lightning in an 1/8mile race, but top end forget it. They will walk away. It may take them awhile b/c as we all know the L is great from a stop and is geared very well for drag racing.

And if you think maybe I have a slow L, see the sig file. Mine runs great. But, a stock LS1 driven right should beat a stock L in a full 1/4 mile race and to 160mph.

Excellent running !

I have had closer runs with auto-boxes than with manual cars, I think most people does not want or can not shift that fast.

Thanx Silver_Roush! I appreciate the clarifications!

Hard to believe these trucks will take them out of the hole.... You'd think that traction would prevent the truck from taking the car!

Is it the 5000 lbs. and traction, or the 8 psi of boost that gets us ahead? I guess both!?1?

What did you think of the track in Denton Friday ? I was there and found the track to be very slick all but one run, and the shutdown area is all torn up. I got tired of having rocks thrown at me from other lane while braking, dont know if I will run there again

LightningDammitt, I agree - hard to believe that a truck weighing as much as it does (4700 pounds) can move as well as it does. IMHO, it is one of those rare cases where everything works extremely well together. The 5.4 V8 is no slouch in it's own right. But slap on an Eaton Supercharger, and boy, that 5.4 really wakes up! It's almost as though the motor and supercharger were ment for each other.

The only thing that I could ask for, would be for SVT to offer it in a Supercab (of course it would be a bit slower then the reg-cab Lightnings). I doubt it will happen, though. Until then, I will settle with our ROUSH.

Silver_2000_ ! - the track was awful Friday night, escpecially as the night wore on. Sixpipes & I were talking on how we felt the burnout area was too close to the staging area, and water was being tracked up there. And yes, slowing down was not fun - too much gravel. I don't remember having either of these 2 problems back in January.

It was great to have you there Friday nite, and at both shows Saturday, Doug!

Thanx for all the responses and input. I am finding more and more that the "automagics" are running me closer than the manuals do. Like the guy in the 3000 GT VR-4,He was w/ me until his first shift, then it was bye-bye!
The Z runs pretty much have me convinced. I fear the manuals more though,an adept drvier w/ a quick car is what it's all about,I really haven't had a "door handle to door handle" run yet,but I'm looking forward to my first. My biggest kills have been against quick cars that were all manuals,F355-3000 GT-and now the LS1. My biggest losses were also to manuals, modded 911-modded SupraTT-RX7 TT.No autos have been able to chalk me up as of yet.

having both a 2000 vette and a 99 lightning i show no favortism one way or the other. I will say i ran my lightning against a 98 convt vette with a manual at an old runway he beat me the first time by one half car lenths and on the second i beat him by the same. Who ever did the best getting out of the hole seemed to hold the advantage. To be honest i was surprised how well the lightning hold its ground above 60mph against the vette. The vette folks were surprised to considering it was a vette autocross. The lightning vette race was the big draw of the weekend.
