Mud flaps & stereo
Have not seen any posts in regards to mudflaps. Has anyone installed any? Does Ford make specific flaps made for the Lightning?
Driving to work today I realized my serious dissapointment in the stereo in this truck. I would have expected a much nicer sounding system. There does not seem to be much bass and the highs are not to my liking either. I have seen posts in regards to the MTX enclosure for the 10 inch subs. I think this will be a must. I have a Rockford Fosgate Power 650 that I will install (providing there will be ample room). I have always been a fan of Alpine stereos. Have any of you installed an Alpine head unit in the L? If so, what model? Last question, with an aftermarket head unit, will the factory CD changer work?

Peter:
I hear ya about the quality of the sound system. There have been many posts about the CD changer being proprietary to the head unit.
Think about this.... The factory unit is decent quality. Install an amp. and perhaps the MTX Thunderform w/2 10" subs. and see what you think. You'll be suprised w/the difference.
Also, if you're going to pull the seats for the amp. and wiring, think about soundproofing..... Makes all the difference in the world if you're looking for cab sound quality....

Good luck.

I guess one of the advantages of having been too close to the stage to hear Duane Allman, Clapton, etc, in my younger years, is that no matter how good the sound system is, i still have to use these seasoned ears, so i can spend my lightning money on all the other must haves
Howdy Peter!
I was like you... Thought the base and the high end were missing. I'm still in the process of upgrading, but I did get a good start. I put in a Sony ES Head unit and 75 watt/channel PPI amp. This didn't help a lot, as the factory speakers REALLY suck! I normally feel that the heart of the system is in the amp/head unit, but in this truck the speakers should be the first to go.
Later, I put in some Cerwin Vegas in the doors, and the system tuned up nicely. There still wasn't enough bass tho....
So I added a single 10" Subwoofer and 400 watt amp. Now the system KICKS ***! I didn't use the dual Thunder Form because I like to use the drivers side area behind the seat for a briefcase and various tools. A "standard" 10" sub box will fit fine behind the passenger seat. If your passenger likes to lean back a bit, they will have to slide forward one notch. I just leave my passenger seat in this position. I put the sub amp under the passenger seat.
A little trick for the main amp:
If you get a "respectable" size, it will fit behind the kick panel on the passenger side. This leaves room for the sub amp under the passenger seat. I did have to move the wiring harness behind the kick panel, but it had enough slack to move it most of the way down to the floor board.
One other tip....
The engine computer is located way up above the kickpanel..... Make sure you leave enough slack in the wiring to lay the amp in the floor board.... This way when you get a custom chip (a must have mod for performance...) It will be a cinch to install.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do, and how it turns out!

Peter B~ I am also a big fan of alpine. I have the CDA-7845 in dash deck, ERA-G320 digital processor, and my alarm is an SEC-8063. I have never had any problems with any of this. I do not know if the deck will run the cd changer, but I do believe it has cd changer controls.

OK, OK, I guess I asked for that one. Let me change my wording to be politicly correct for the Lightning. I am looking for "Paint chip protectors". I have no intention of driving my L through any mud. To give you all an idea of how meticulous I am, when I'm driving my Vette, if I see a construction zone, I'll turn around or turn off and never drive on that type of nasty terrrain. The exact same will hold true for the L. I'm just worried about rock chips.
Peter....
It entirely depends on what you want to spend for the stereo. I like a lot of clarity in sound and one that is well balanced. Believe it or not, I really like mine now. I felt the same thing as you are feeling now. I simply put in some new Pioneer 2-way speakers in place of the factory units along with some dynamat and things became a whole lot better. I set the fader to the front by 1/4 and with the new speakers installed, everything sounds crisp, there are sweet highs and a nice tight-punchy bass.
Again it depends on how much you want to spend. I didn't want to spend much because I have to get my chip, Borla, and AirRaid in the spring.

Hey Floyd,
I have an older Alpine that I put in my truck and though it is a great CD player, it is now six years old and starting to skip.
How old is your 7845? Is that one of the new generation CD players? I am looking at one of the 2000 model Alpines to replace what I have now but I don't want to still have a skipping problem. My truck's susp. is still factory so I would think that just a new CD player with a newer type of anti-skip mechanism would be okay.
I also looked at Sony ES because they have Shock Protection. Oh well, let me know what you think everybody.
Later,
Collin

I have a Sony ES (not sure which #, but 6850 or 7850 sounds right) in my 91 Bronco and I love it. It was kinda expensive, but it came with 2 remotes (wired and wireless) and has ESP. Plus, it verbally tells you what station you are on and what preset you changed to so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
In the nine or ten months I have had it, it has never skipped (even with the extreme four-wheeling that I do). I thought about taking it out and putting it in my L, but am not sure yet. I guess I better figure out soon!

Hey Collin,
I have an Alpine 7840 in mine along with the rest of my upgraded stereo stuff. I do not know what the difference b/w it and the 7845 are...you probably do, though. No skipping at all. I've had it in there since I had 250 miles on the truck.
Anyone who wants/needs any of the factory stereo equipment send me an e-mail. It can be had very cheaply. :-)

Hey Peter B - where did you get the mud flaps for the 'vette. Just curious!
With regard to skipping in a CD player, man I haven't heard of that in a long, long time. I would think that any unit on the market nowadays would never skip, unless doing a Nathan flyby and finding Tundra's moose.

Peter B,
I bought some 3M clear tape that is used on the bottom panels of cars and trucks that protects them from rock chips. I can't remember the exact name for it but, if you go to an auto body shop and ask for it they will know what you are referring to. It is a little on the expensive side, but is better than rock chips. Once it is applied and you get the air bubbles out you can hardly even tell it's there. Hope it helps.
