4.10 gear choices?

OK, gear time.... what brand 4.10 gears is everyone getting? and what all else do I need to hand the installer--IOW, what does the install kit need to include and who sells an install kit with only what is needed? Is it just shims, seal, and pinion nut? Do I need any new bearings? Man these sets are expensive... I'm trying not to spend $400 on the parts alone! I was thinking about the Ford Racing gears, but seems to be some confusion as to whether they're available at all -- Part # M-4209-J410M. Actually summit has them available for $249 but 3 weeks out of stock. Anybody getting any whine with their 4.10s? brands to stay away from? Looks like Superior and Motive have 9.75" R&P sets for reasonable prices.

I went with Precision Gears. No noise. Good quality. Here's a link that may help a little.

superior is the choice with the install kit that had everything in a blister pack, got mine from summit, they told me superior makes FRPP gears. My installer said he hears some noise when i let off at slow speed but i think its the same tranny noise i've had since day one. Dont forget the synthetic gear oil and friction modifer your gonna love em btw I got to roast a GTO today, when i pulled out from the gas station he decided to pass ,NOT!! he gave up when i put 2 lengths by 80

thanks fellas. so DNB, what all came in that gear install kit? I don't see summit having one specifically for a Ford 9.75.

I'm buying a set from a guy on these boards and can't wait to get them installed.
I know the difference is going to be quite noticeable. I have a (basically) stock truck, so this is my first mod.

I want to get a new differential cover as well.

I'm have a non-Lightning F150. I went from a 3.55 ls to 4.10's. Certainly a difference, but not a HUGE one. If I have a 3.73 axel, I don't see it being worth the money..

I went with Ford Racing 9.75" set. Mine had a slight whine.. added some friction modifier and its gone.

What's up my Kentucky brotha? I did 3.42s in my 94 Z28 6 speed and it was a huge difference. not expecting much with 3.73--> 4.10. BUT i race about every weekend, local track is 5 min from my house, so every tenth has a price tag on it. at this point i am looking for not adding any more stress to my motor but something to pick up speed so it's coming down to the gears and torque converter eventually. good to know yours don't whine. i'm leaning towar the Ford gears myself.

halflife, i think you'll find a range of $150-300 to be pretty common. I've got buddy mechanic who can do mine though

When every tenth counts... you gotta have em.

The guy I had install my gear set is one of my fathers close friends. He has his own business he runs on the side.

I came to him, told him what I wanted. He recommended Ford gears... granted, they do cost more, but he told me that you'd get less whine from them than any other gear and they were easier to install.

When mine were whining, it was very low... one notch on the radio is louder... I doubt you could even hear them over that blower.

I think it might be a little more noticable on an L. But then again I don't know what else (mod wise) you have done to truck. I'll make sure to let you know the difference on my L, because much like shlepdog its going to be one of my first mods.

How are the 4.10's for all around use? I have 3.55's and need to change but do I go 3.73's or 4.10's? 4.10's are better for performance but what about at the end of the 1/4 mile and MPG. This is a daily driver that I will probably drag, autocross etc. Is a 4.10 to agressive?

well, i don't have them yet but definitely go with the 4.10s unless you have a mega horsepower beast. you probably won't see a big drop in MPG around town, you'll see a loss of MPG on highway, maybe 2 MPG. not sure about autocrossing and the kickdown with more gear, should be fine. these aren't really machines made for autocrossing (but don't tell KTY that). you'll be fine in the quarter unless you've got a built motor mega horsepower, even then you might be ok with 30" slicks and letting it rev a little higher. do some searching, there is pretty good info on 4.10s around here.

I would recommend anyone with 3.55's to up to 4.10s. Its not too much...

If I could do it over, I would had bought 4.56.

But, I dont have a blower sittin on top of my motor (yet), so my off idle torque is slightly lower. With gobs of positive displacement torque off idle, 4.56 might be too much... Just my 2 cents
