Drag strips in So. Cal?
To show you how old and decrepit I am, I used to run my '65 'Cuda at Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington. That is obviously ancient history now. Am wondering where you So. Cal. L owners race your trucks these days. I know there is a strip in Carlsbad, but that's a long way to go from Ventura. I know there's a strip in Pomona, but I don't know if its open to the public. Any info would be appreciated.

Pomona is open occasionally for street legal drags and is in my opinion the best track around here..I heard carlsbad sucks but the elevation makes for great times
either way let me know if you guys find a good track to race at because i'm looking to run my 1st gen lightning in April.
Dave.

Mike: should be april 9th but i'd call em to check for sure because I heard the street legal drags may be closed from now on due to complaints. Anyhow..how much faster did your truck run at Carlsbad?
Dave I can't compare to Pomona since I've never been there, but if you're talking about with drag radials - I ran a best of 13.618 @ 103, if my memory is correct that was about 4/10s faster than before, and I don't have a chip yet. MagnaFlow is gonna do a dual muffler cat-back with my truck soon, I'm gonna see how much improvement they are over my single dual in/dual out flowmaster. Hopefully it will be done before Pomona opens, if it does open that is.

Brimstone, I wish you would tell me about your Cal-tracs. Do you hook up a lot better with them? How much did you pay for them, and who did the install? And, most important, would they compromise the towing ability of the L?

alphadoggy, there is always Los Angeles County Raceway out here in the Antelope Valley. Two miles from my house and I've only been there twice in eleven years. Altitude will kill ET's.

Alphadoggy,
Cal-Tracs work great but they aren't the cure all for your traction problems, IMO. You really have to set them at the right level though, you don't want to pre-load the springs too much either. They are also great for balancing left and right - my truck used to go sideways as soon as the tires started spinning, now I would have to make an effort to make my truck go sideways. You should do a search for traction bars, this topic has been discussed quite a bit.
As far as towing ability they are adjustable so I don't think they would make a difference, I may be wrong though.

Talked to the folks at Cal-tracs and they say that the bars should actually help towing. Soon as I free up a little time will drive over to Lancaster and get them installed. (Never imagined this truck would turn into the money pit it is becoming)
Nostalgia Trip:
Lions, Pomona, Ramona, Carlsbad, Riverside and a strip I can't remember the name of at an old airstrip in San Diego. That one was also a really neat SCCA road course for sports cars whose names none of us remember.
I raced at all of them ca. 1955-1960. Also an ex-airstrip near El Centro, Ca. in the mid sixties. Bumpy as all get out, but a lot of fun. I was running straight eight and V-8 Buicks at the time (worked for the El Centro Buick dealer).
Practical question, how many strips are left in Southern California in the new millenium?

Jeez, Bill, if you can remember that stuff you must be almost as ancient as I am. The SCCA boys used to race at March AFB for a while. Probably best race I ever saw at any venue was Ken Miles in the #50 MG special against a Porsche 550 at March. I also dimly recall going to a race near Santa Barbara (?) and watching Lance Reventlow's Scarabs kick butt. This had to be in the 50's. I should be out in your neck of the woods sometime this spring or summer, would love to get together and reminisce about old times.
AlphaDoggy:
Yeah, saw a lot of that too. Remember Riverside, awesome track in the late '50s.
Never forget the first time they ran a Nascar race there (exhibition-non points) and seeing '57 Oldsmobiles falling off every turn.
If in Atlanta, give me a holler. Print or save my e-mail addie and give me a week or so notice. Mi casa es tu casa, so don't book a motel room.

Very kind of you to offer, Bill. I don't know exactly when they are going to build my boat, but as soon as I get a handle on the time frame I will shoot you an e-mail. Been a long, long time since I have been in that area; really looking forward to the trip. Planning to check out some other old friends along the route. Getting excited just thinking about it.
