Smile Killed a RX7 Twin Turbo

Tonight after I installed Sal's chip and intake kit I went hunting. About 10 miles out I came upon a nice shiney red Mazda RX7 with Louisiana Tags. I had mistaken it for a TransAm at first but My 180 pound passenger noticed it right off. I weigh in about 230. Any way I goosed it a couple times and extracted a grin from the dude and it was on.
Rolled from about 80 , he caught a gear...and maybe pulled a half lenght on me....we topped a hill about 120 and I was pulling him back. Flashing lighhts ,on the brakes he and I. It was a tow truck. I pull back up and he is game...I walked him by about 5 car lenghts from about 100 and he never gained. I was @ 140 plus and still slowly gaining RPM. Was around 4500. We both stayed it it for several miles. I slowed and he pulled up. My passenger rolled down the window as did the dude in the Mazda. Thumbs up...
We hollered back and forth..He said man you got some acceleration! I asked how fast were we going cause I peg at 140. He came back with I was at 160.

It was exhilerating.

What's the Feedback?

Good kill, but don't take the Mazda driver's word on the top speed. If you're running stock Lightning drivetrain & tires and you're doing 4500 rpm (in 4th, of course) you're making ~138 mph. In order to make 160 mph you'd need about 5200 rpm and a whole lot more hp. I haven't heard of anyone yet doing that in an L, but I suppose it is possible with enough mods. I'm curious about the windshield at such a speed... would it stay put?

Huh?

Did I miss something tvw?

I understand about taking the Mazda drivers word. The part about the windshield has me going though.

Guess maybe the 140 speedo in My truck isn't reliable. It pegs at 140 @+- 4200 RPM. Well, actually it goes past 140 a few increments. Then again maybe it's the Tach that is unreliable.

The windshield is an issue with other truck models in round-y-round racing; particularly big rigs because of their flat twin pane design. The similarity between the L & a big rig is not so great, but any windshield that is close to upright (as opposed to raked) becomes an issue at great speed (160 mph qualifies in my mind). They can disintegrate or implode with explosive force based on a variety of conditions, i.e. contact with a bit of flying debris, body flex based on hitting a bump; that sort of thing.

I’ve had my L up to 140 (indicated) but up to 130 was a breeze, 130 to 140 took at least a mile. The wind resistance and noise was incredible, also when I took my foot off the accelerator it was like a dropped a parachute out of the bed, for a split second the seat belts dug in. The L is as aerodynamic as a brick or F4. I don’t think I’ll ever sell this truck, maybe I’ll just get buried in it.

Hey Twisted I'm with you 137mph=4100rpm in my L. Speed measured by GPS, tach could be off. F1 you are right on 130comes up fast done it several times after that the wind noise, resistance =one big brick.

Killed an RX-7 TT eh??? Congrats on an impressive kill! I am myself was handed my own head by a friend of mine who owns an RX,we went from a roll at about 10 mph and he crushed me out of the hole. Granted we only went for about 50 yrds(maybe not even that long),we were just screwin' around since nobody seemed to want any part of either of us. The "Sushiers" where we were were on his jock(import brotherhood),though one of them actually asked "is that a Viper?" Ummmmm.Ummmmm. Yep, It's a Viper. And you...You are a dunce.

P.S. My buddies RX is for sale,23k,w/ 31k miles on it.It's the rare red w/ black interior.Sweet car.

good kill amigo. as for the speed discussion...i would believe it at 160...the tach tends to be a bit sloppy inthe upper register...
