These Lightnings are amazing! When a big truck can kill an SVT Cobra, something is really right about the truck. I guy in a pre current generation Cobra ran a red light to come and get a piece of me. I got to run him three times, once from 45mph, once from 60, and once from a standing start. I walked him badly on the running starts. He got the jump on me off the line, but the L ran perfectly, and I was very quickly catching him, as I watched him execute a perfect shift. The White beauty ate a little white snake for lunch today!! I've run into 3 Cobras that would not run me, and finally found an anxious participant. Lightnings rule!

1999 SVT Lightning

 

Ran a 99 SVT Cobra at Texas Motor Plex last Friday. My reaction time sucked ( 1st time at track ) and he beat me to the finish by a 1/10th but my ET was 1/2 sec better than his.

In 3 1/2 weeks I have found only one sucker (F body) willing to punch it on the street. The Silver must be too intimidating.

Great race Doug!

Had you had a chip and filter, you would have owned the guy. Based on the pre release information, I never expected to be able to run with standard 5.0 liter Mustangs which of course they easily defeat. What I find to be particularly exciting is the fact that these beauties really start coming into their own as they break in. Mine was a pig initially compared to how it runs now! AAMOF, I almost did not take delivery on it I was so disappointed with the initial test drive. Had I driven it in its current state of fury, I probably would have insisted on paying more for it.

I have been thinking about intake and chip - However WARRANTY still makes me nervous. Which of the intake systems is easiest to bolt back to factory ?? Chip is likely a no go till I have a bunch more miles on mine.

All I did Friday was wait for green and punch it. My 13.9 would have beat 75% of the runs, if I can trim my reaction time and learn to 2 foot the launch I could likely get down further in the 13's.

Wow, that must've been one slow evening at the M-plex. Typically, there are a handful of 11-second street cars and a good number of 12-second street cars.

Of course, I don't even bother watching stuff that's running 15s, so maybe I just don't pay enough attention when I'mt down there. I'm always concentrating on what I'm doing.

I just need to get a good number of the guys from our local Mustang group to show up...I don't think there's one out of 20-25 of us that run slower than low-13s. We're getting too old to race every weekend, I guess.

Not here to bust your bubble, but just incase you didn't know most, if not all 99 cobra's did not have the 320hp as advertised.
Ford noticed this problem when People started dynoing their cobras, and were only getting between 265-280hp. Ford is now fixing all 99 cobra's with a re-programed chip, larger intake, and diffrent exhaust. So if you raced a non-fixed cobra, I see you beating it. when you get to race a Fixed or 01' cobra, then it will beat the lightning. No flame, just facts.

No bubbles here. The issues with the cobras have been well documented here and elsewhere. The kid in this school bus yellow Cobra couldnt drive it so I doubt he knows it is underpowered. The reality is on that night my lightnings ET was better than 75%+ of the crowd, dont know if it was poor driving, lack of power or the phase of the moon. There was GTO that looked great and ran in the 12's, he would have beat me too, but I would have still had a good time racing him. If I wanted a Cobra, Corvette, Porsche or F body I would have bought one, but I wanted this and am very happy with it.

PS: 2000 Cobras's are listed as 13.8 seconds in 1/4 IF they EVER make any this year. All I did was step on the gas to get a 13.9. Who knows what would happen if I knew how to drive it.

Just a side note. I ran a *post fixed* Cobra and layed the smack down on him from a stand still until about 110 when he finally caught up and started to pull a little...I ran @101 in the 1/4 stock...so logic tells you...@101 *in or out of a 1/4* he got steady drug...But I'm just saying...

I think any of the airboxes are rather easy installation whether it be the Airaid as I run, Sals (PSP) or Downs Ford. As far as the chip goes, you will wonder how you liked the truck BC (Before chip). It makes that much of a difference! If I couldn't run my chip, I would sell my Lightning - I could never go back knowing what I am giving up.

You take a stock lightning and a stock(pre fixed)cobra.The lightning will smoke it EVERY TIME.

You take a cobra (ford fixed with computer/intake and a chipped and filtered lightning,The lightning will smoke it every time.

The way I see it The other responses are inaccurate.Not to bust any bubbles.No flame just facts Thank you drive thru lol

 

How will a cobra lose everytime? It's 1500lbs lighter, and produces 320hp?????? Sorry, no flame, but I don't buy it. Unless the driver of the cobra is the crapiest driver ever, then the cobra should beat it or be dead even..

Most '96-98 Cobras (not '99s) that I've seen at the track I race at (Texas Motorplex) will run 13.7-13.9s @ 102.xx mph bone stock with a decent driver.

Most '99 Lightnings at the same track will run 13.8-14.0s bone stock. Doug's ran a 13.9 his first time out, as did mine.

I've seen several '99 Cobras with the fix at the track and both were in the 13.3-13.4 range. No stock Lightning runs this fast at THIS track. Some of you guys in the NE are at sea level and have much better air quality than we do here in TX. It's all relative, but a bone stock '96-98 Cobra with a good driver will run right with a stock '99-00 L.

1/8 mile race would be a different story, though. I believe the L would win 90% of these races...which is what all these reported "kills" are. Most of them are not full 1/4 mile runs.
