Post Spark Plugs?

I own a '99 F150 4X4 with the 5.4. I have heard that these engines do not have spark plugs. I am not sure if this is true, but if you know, can you give me any information on them. I would like to know as much as possible. Thanks

They have plugs, they don't have any plug wires. It uses a new COP (coil on plug) system that eliminates the need for external wiring.

Hope this helps...

Puss_ss,

Coil on plug is just what it says, instead of one coil routing it's charge thru a distributor through wires and a rotor, the coil packs (8) are directly connected (physically) to the spark plugs, and controlled exclusively thru the PCM.

That is why Ford has the ability to control the number of cylinders firing during shift transitions and the boost dumped if the PCM senses a potentially damaging condition in it's parameters (i.e. trans overtemp, I found out about that one the hard way). W/O the computer, these puppies go nowhere, period.

I hope this clears it up for you. Please don't think I'm being condescending, I am trying to explain something I am just beginning to understand well. This whole concept has been an interesting study for me. The more I learn about it, the more I can see how much control Ford has taken.

Once the PCM code is fully understood, new chips can be made that will really wake up the performance that currently lies untapped in these beasts. Sal's latest chip code is a big step in that direction. I'm getting a woody just thinking about it! MORE POWER! OOH OOH OOH!

Question

Hey wildman. I hear these plugs are suppose to last 100K, but I'll bet they don't last that long with NO2 and racing gasoline. How do you remove these plugs for inspection. Are they just like reg plugs or different. What do they cost. Are they available at the auto parts or only from ford. I understand that if you take them out you need to put them back in the same cylinder they came out of.

Noel,

I believe the plugs are only available from SVT right now. I haven't had to pull one yet, but it doesn't look inviting, fuel rails, the coil pack, and miscellanous plumbing in the way.

Cool

I pulled one of the coil packs off just to see and found had an extension boot to the plug which is 3 or 4 inches below the coil.
